Two things I love are History and Video games.
I watched the first few minutes to check it out but tonight I sit back and watch the whole thing.
Thanks for the heads up

AWESOME!!!.... Well worth the watch, I got all sentimental over Boot Hill right at the beginning, and had to watch the rest through tear stained eyes and drippy mascara.

Watching the video again, I don't entirely agree with the section on voxels.  The video presenter says they are an "evolutionary dead end", but work on voxel rendering has continued.  Granted, the technology still has a ways to go to catch up to current 3D rendering especially with respect to dynamic lighting and animation.  But it's still pretty impressive what has been done so far.

I watched it and figured someone around here would have a weirdo exception regarding voxels.  Left thread satisfied.

Personally, I'm not so sure I'd call 2005ish graphic quality "pretty impressive" nowadays.  All that stuff looks weird and flat.

What I found particularly interesting in that video was around the late 90s era when some of those games looked good and didn't require any special hardware.  Kind of amazing what we used to be able to run on our office computers....

I think the video means an "evolutionary dead end" when it comes to gaming, or mass market games.

Look how many dJ's used Mini Disc well after the format died from popular use (were they ever popular?) Same with Betamax, There are still the odd news stations that used Beta up until the late 90's, if not longer (or still).

Voxels are still technically being used though.  For example, Unreal Engine 4 includes voxels for lighting.  And idTech6 is rumored to include voxels as well.

Here's an article from a couple years ago where Tim Sweeney discusses voxels in modern gaming: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/189074/the_old_guard_an_interview_with_.php (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/189074/the_old_guard_an_interview_with_.php)

It sounds like the technology has usages, but processing power needs to catch up first.

I used to track this stuff a lot more, so I don't recall if it takes more horse power or what for voxels. But, I think the draw is that things are deformable (i.e. you can blow ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- up!). Everquest Next is using a voxel engine and it looks like it's pretty easy for the people willing to build the game for SOE to do so. Here is a video (starting at about the 29th minute) where they go into more detail about creating stuff with voxels:

Each time I saw a demonstration of voxels, they seemed real big.  Like Atari 2006 vs Wii graphics.  Why is that?  They are huge.

Very enjoyable and informative!

My son likes playing Space Engineers which is another example of a current voxel based game.

Perhaps, but doesn't Minecraft use Voxels? That's mass market.

In any case, Voxels are not dead - games DO use them, as do special effects studios etc.
They still have their place and I actually think Voxels are going to become more and more important in the future. Computer power has proven to be the limiting factor, but as it increases this will be less relevant, opening the door for Voxels to become more popular.
