In a very, very dumb act of haste I had a live 12v wire come into contact with a ground wire on my JAMMA harness on a GT Complete board. The game was on and immediately went to operator settings menu. I thought no big deal. Tried to exit the menu and nothing. Trackball did not highlight any other settings and the game would not exit. Sounded as if hard drive was trying to work though. After several minutes I shut it off, left it off for a while and tried to start back up. Screen starts to show boot up screen where it says "Detecting IDE Hard Drive... Hard Drive Detected" then just hangs. Please tell me this whole board is not fried?? Please......
EDIT: Just thought of something... I have a GT 2005 hard drive. If I plug that in, will it help troubleshoot or will I only get to the same point and still hang up?
-
detecting hard drive please wait this could a few minuite's
mean's it is resetting it's data base
let it run for about 10-15mins
it should go det 1
det 2
det 3
then go to game
on the green board there is 3 led's
if 1 of them is blinking ?
that's is the board talking to the hard drive.
if it come's solid and stay's on ? then chances are your hard drive is south
ed
-
there are 4 red LEDs and they are on solid. There are 2 green LEDs and they are blinking. Just fired it back up and I'll let it run for a while to see if there is progress.
It did boot all the way to the initial boot screen where the top says "USA Golden Tee Fore! 6.00.01"
Bottom of screen says: "System Status OK... Initializing, Please Wait" This is where it sits.... I'll just wait n see but it doesn't seem like it is trying to progress at all. No sound from hard drive just sitting here
-
After 20 minutes and no activity, I shut it off waited a few sec and retarted. Didn't boot as far and the green light near the EP Rom stays on solid. So from Ed's post, sounds like the hard drive?? Screen is also a bit jumbled but I can make out that it says. Detecting Hard Drive...Hard Drive Detected" That's it nothing else
-
try In your spare..
but be ready for wrong game serial #
and or a red screen with yellow writing telling u the s/w dose match the key..
no biggie it just means u did not fry the board interface chip or do other board damage
ed
-
OK. New hard drive ordered. Now to try and be patient. The more I think about this, I can't help but wonder if that 12v wire did really touch anything. I assumed that is what cause the problem but actually I was in the middle of a round and it went to the menu automatically. I had to restart my round. In the second round it did the same thing but would not come out of the operator menu. Maybe the hard drive was just failing on its own. Is this possible and is that how they go?
-
oh yes.. they are old 10+ year's
ed
-
So I borrowed a friend's CF card to test on my Complete board. I know his CF drive works and I have 2.09 boot rom. Still the same thing. Game will not boot up. I tested my power supply and the voltages on U15, all good there. I really don't know what else to do. Any suggestions before I send this back to I.T. for repair?
My trackball is not earth grounded. The problem couldn't be that simple is it?
-
i.t is still repairing them ?
last time I talked to joe he said they were not repairing them
ed
-
Not sure if they still are. 3-4 minths ago i was told they still were repairing them but couldve changed by now. Im picking up a cd-rom drive to plug in tonight. That is probably my last effort on my own. If no one has any other ideas for me to try, i will be looking to have it shipped out and repaired.
-
well
why the said that is they no longer have part's for them
expect the few bad run's they had at production..
hence the reason I do u53/u63/and few other chip's
I blow through on avg 4-6 prmth
at 1 time I was using big buck hunter mother boards for repair,
until I received stock on the lsi
ed
-
Wait!! You have new chips available? Do you think this would solve my problem? Im in the U.S. So i would need that verion
-
yes I have stock..
but I want u to do a few more test's for me.
no need for a cdrom as we are looking at the I/o active led
without a hard drive cd rom I want u to plug the unit in
and tell me if the led's are blinking or are on solid?
this tell's me a lot
start there
ed
-
I turned it on 3 different times with no hard drive or cd-rom plugged in. All 3 times the 2 green LEDs were both blinking. There are 4 red Leds, and two of the tests all 4 of these lit up, on one test only 3 of them lit up. Red lights were all solid with no blinking.
Screen just says: detecting IDE hard drive. Nothing more
-
ok a set of questions
first the 4 led's in a row I do not care about right now
d5a status 2 led
d20 status 1 led
d2 ide activity
exactly what are these led's doing ?
now on your board is 2 dip switch's
sw5
sw51
they should layout like this
sw5 1 off 2.3.4 on
sw51 all on
are your setting's like that ?
ed
-
DIP switch settings are exactly how you said they should be.
I turned the board on and off for the LED test. Did it 3 times with about one minute between power up and power down. Same result all 3 times.
D5A Blinking
D20 Blinking
IDE activity: Nothing. No light, no blink. (I do not have my hard drive connected to the board as i think that is how you asked me to do the tests)
-
well this is good news
d5a and d50 means your boards logic is working
when u asked what surface mount is look at u2.
now u2 is the real world interface controller >pia<
now I need u to do another set of tests for me.
we will use a multi meter set to dc range.
black wire on ground, and red on L5 u should read +12v on both sides
next we go to L57 u should read +5 on both side's
if either are missing? u will need to fix that problem.
with the logic working I would focus on L5. and it's feeders
side note here
u have L500 L559 L500
they are your +12v +5v jamma feed points
ed
-
Thanks... I will try this when i get home this evening. Just one thing to note for you, my power gets to the board via the power connectors directly on the board, power does not come through my JAMMA harness
-
then u have a red board
as it pull's it's power through the atx board connecter
I will bring a red board home
only thing that changes are the choke's
ed
-
No no no, it's absolutely a green board. I can run power through my JAMMA harness, but according to the Golden Tee Fore manual, the preferred way to power the green boards is through the power bypass connectors directly on the board
I have the green board power supply and bought an extra power harness connector that takes the 9 pin power from the psu and converts it to a 4 pin molex type connector (looks more like a power commector from a pc) that plugs in on the board near the JAMMA harness. If i were home, i would take a picture. Maybe i can find one online to show you
Update: found a picture to show you. See those two 4-pin connectors rights beside the IDE connections? They are power inputs directly into the green board

-
oh god
power the dang up through the jamma..... or I cannot help u
as my power rig for the green board uses the jamma for the red board it uses the atx
them 4 pin plug's DO NOT POWER THE COMPLETE BOARD
and if are having problem's u cannot deduce from where without doing the good
ol factory way
ed
-
OK, will do. I definitely appreciate your help. I just mentioned that is how i was powering my board in case it made a difference, which apparently it does. I'll be home soon and will power my board up thru JAMMA and i will double check the led lights to make sure no change there. Then i'll get my multimeter to test to things you had asked
-
thk-u

Have some differences to report. I now have power coming thru Jamma harness. NOTE: one of the power contacts on the board looks black like it was burned. I gently scraped it the best i could to try to have good contact with the jamma harness.
Now when i power up the board, no hard drive connected, D20 stays lit solid, no blink... D5A doesn't light at all, nothing there. And IDE activity no light there either. I did test voltages on L5 and L57. Here are the results
L5 - 12.11v, both sides.
L57 - 3.45v and 4.73
PSU output reads: +5.09V and + 12.10V
-
sounds like u have a ground problem
let me chk my jamma will get back to u
ed
-
Strange thing is when changed the power to go through my JAMMA harness, i got no signal on the monitor and the D20 and D5A LEDs acted differently. When power went directly to the board, monitor at least got a signal and screen said "detecting IDE hard drive". The hard drive was not plugged in so there was nothing to detect.
I did measure the power on L5 and L57 before i routed the power thru the JAMMA harness and i did get the exact same readings there, but different activity on the status lights. I have no idea what is going on here so I really hope ed comes up with something. I just bought the board and had it one week before it went on me! :hissy:
-
post me a few picture's of your jamma and this damage :burnt/black trace:
I need some more input, it sound's to me that the 3.3v is missing
and before u point to your reading's they should be +5v and +12v
the board at them 4 pin connecters should read 5 ands 12 normal hard drive voltages
ed
-
just to confuse it even more
the green board came in to gens
#1 gen used the jamma power input
#2 gen did not use the jamma power input
if your's dose not have the jamma power input
then this change's the work
ed
-
No, I'd say it does. There are traces and components on the board where the power goes on a JAMMA harness. It does light and power on anyways once I ran the power thru my JAMMA harness. I only have one ground wire sharing both the +12v and the 5v lines. Is that OK? Or should they have separate ground wires?
-
good news we are getting some where
on these boards jamma should carry 4 grounds
2 on the part's side 2 on the solder side
please try to make sure this is done that way
ed
-
well maybe not getting anywhere. I checked and my JAMMA harness has a jumper connecting the grounds on both parts side and solder side so all grounds are tied together and then my +5V and +12V wires share that same ground connection.
Upon closer look, I may not be able to power my board this way. Looks like one of the traces or contacts on my board that I said was burned is actually half gone. There is very little metal left and it is the +5V power supply. See in the picture...
This is after I cleaned it up too. The metal that is left on the +5V trace is so thin and brittle, I'm afraid to work with it much more. I had noticed it when I got the board but figure it was no big deal since I had planned to power the board directly. What's my next step ed?
-
oh boy
your 5v took a hit...
I have a board like that.
I made note's of the total bypass needed
we need to get power back to a part of the board that power's the :pia: stuff..
or u could have a blown interface chip ?
ic u23/24/20
they interface the hard drive combo
and ic u58/u55/u56/u57 interface the jamma
your problem is right there.
they are surface mount chip's
they run on 3.3v so we need to get that reg working
there is a test u can do I will pm u on it
once I have my notes
in front of me.
but it put's the board in a complete service test mode
by complete I mean the hidden menu
and yes before u ask it is there
ed
-
:hissy:
I dont like the way that sounds.... :banghead:
-
can u solder ?
ed
-
Yes, i have done some soldering in the past on PCBs. Very little though. But I'm willing to try if that's what needs done to fix this board.
-
well it is only a bypass AT the jamma input
give me a byte to find my by-pass cable
u will be soldering to the input choke's
and using the upper ground plane as ground
ed
-
Will try. Just let me know what to do. Also, what are input chokes?
-
ABACABB, I have a very nice soldering station setup if you need to use.
(It's where my basement arcade area used to be :'( )
Not a lot of free time, but I could spare a Sunday afternoon.
-
thanks BadMouth, appreciate the offer. I do have a little set up as I'm also working on a virtual pincab and have been doing some soldering for that project. I don't know how much soldering will be involved for me yet and my skills are less than great so when i find out what i need to do i may hit you up
Thanks!
-
ok here we go..
these yes :theses: are going to be a txt of a pdf
so go with the flow here...
#1 the reason I asked u to not plug in a hard drive cd rom
is I wanted to know if the ide activity light is stuck on ?
this would mean a bad u2
with the led off at all time's it means there is no ide interface
to detect.
u see the led blinks once at boot. then again when the board wants an answer
from it > ide < . it the red led will blink once.
if it get's a proper answer >mbr< saying hey I am here. the micro move's on
now rember the green led's blink the full time.
they do not stop. if they are stuck ? your simple answer is the bus is stuck..
a simple request is not getting answered.
back to the hard drive
once it go's through chking 0-2=3 the board will boot to chking modem
then loading game
all of that can take 5 hard to 7 hard min's
to confirm in your mind the red led will now blink a lot
saying to the micro hey bud handshake time.
so the key is the red, green, green led's
as I just explained
it work's no other way..
green led's 2-x must blink at all time's
red led once in a bit but normally stay's off unless
refreshing.
if it is stuck on ? u have either a interface problem ?
and or down stream problems.
the pia is pretty tough..
so we look at the 3.3v line
this comes from a regulator attached to the jamma interface only
on this gen board
more will follow for u
ed
-
I have the Golden Tee 2005 with a Red board
D20, Stat1 is on solid
D5A, Stat2 is blinking
IDE Activity, appears to be a RED LED and it is on very faintly.
D20 should be blinking....so what does this mean?
-
Having the issue with being stuck on operator menu. Goes through all checks well but will not exit operator menu.
-
if u have stuck or no green led's
the red led is the least of your problems
with green led/led's stuck .let's look at the bus
with d5a blinking your secondary bus is running
this is u53/modem/card1 ic/reset ic/and a few others
with d20 solid
your primary bus is not working
this would be u15/u26/u61/u2
now so u are clear as mud on this u2 is where the primary/secondary bus meet
so I tend not to look at it first
but I foucs my thought to u15
bent pin/bad socket/broken trace
start there
