Title: to roll-back or to update?
Post by: bfauska on February 12, 2015, 05:23:50 pm
I've got a 0.111 rom set in my cabinet and had been running a 0.111 version of mame until I got hooked on a game without native highscore support. When I realized that my Burgertime scores were disapearing everytime I exited I hunted down a no-nag mame with highscore support but the oldest version I could find was 0.133. Now my 800k BT score is saved but I have a bunch of games that won't work.
The PC is an old Athlon 900mhz machine running XP that I don't want to ask much more of than I am already. What do you guys think is the best way for me to get more compatibility between my roms and mame, find newer roms and run newer mame with highscore support or find a 0.111 mame with highscore support?

Don't update unless you plan on updating that machine. You are gonna find yourself hard pressed to play a few of the classics now that mame has been switching away from some games using samples and opting for resource-heavy sound emulation.

Just compile your own highscore/no nag mame with HeadKaze's complier. It isn't so hard. 0.111 high score diff file needed to compile and instructions are right here.

And just a clarification, you can go with a slightly newer mame if you want. There is some wiggle room before it gets too resource heavy. But I would avoid anything within the last couple years for your machine.

What about keeping Mame and those Roms but getting a new version of each for the games you want to update?

Easier to acquire one v a whole set, keeps everything running smoothly for the games you play, and its easier than compiling.

Thanks, I thought that may be the solution  when I did the hunt for highscore stuff a few weeks ago and got myself into this mess then I found the other version and gave it a shot and didn't realize it'd broken some of them until the other day. I'll have to go back and do it this way I think, compiling my first mame here I come...

I thought about that briefly but didn't see (in my short search) the ability to have different emulators launched from the same game list in Mamewah.

Thanks for the quick help guys.

Thanks again for all the help. Compiling wasn't so bad after all. Compiled last night and put it in the cab this morning with the .111 roms all seeming to work (at least the ones I noticed weren't after the .133 mame install) and highscore support.
