Title: somewhat off topic - Radeon 9250 driver for Windows 7?
Post by: krick on February 10, 2015, 10:15:42 pm
Calamity,

Do you happen to know if there's a modified driver for a Radeon 9250 in Windows 7 32-bit?

I've seen people in other forums mention that there was a modifed (Vista?) driver (possibly from a card manufacturer) floating around that worked, but all the links I can find are dead.

This is for a standard monitor by the way, not an arcade monitor.

From what I understand, up to Catalyst 6.5, the Radeon 9250 was supported in Windows 2000/XP.  Then in Catalyst 6.6, support for the Radeon 9250 was dropped.  I'm guessing that if a 9250 Vista driver exists, it might be either a 6.5 or 6.6 beta version.

I was able to find a XP XDDM driver, allegedly ripped from Vista (possibly a Vista beta) that I was able to manually install that at least lets Windows 7 identify the Radeon 9250 and give me the full list of resolution options for my monitor instead of capping out at 1024x768 like the generic VGA driver.  The card doesn't support DirectX 9.0, so no Aero features are available, but at least it's properly identified.

In case anyone cares, here's the download link:  http://www.mediafire.com/?5tieomimroy (http://www.mediafire.com/?5tieomimroy)
The file name is:  Vista_ATI_Radeon_XDDM_6.14.10.6606.zip

Now I'm off to find a cheap Radeon 9550, which allegedly DOES support DirectX 9.0.

Nothing exciting.  Not emulation related.  I'm tying to fix a relative's old PC.  They had an AGP Nvidia 6200 card and were experiencing that random bluescreen issue that some people have with new Nvidia drivers.  I swapped it for an old ATI Radeon 9250 I had laying around and quickly found out that there aren't proper Windows 7 drivers available.

Hi krick,

As far as I know you could still use XP drivers in Windows 7, but obviously because these won't implement the WDDM model some features will be disabled (Aero, etc.).

Here's a link for the 32-bit version of Catalyst 6.11, which internally is the same binary as the 6.5 and maybe this was making you miss its track:

Calamity.  Just for the heck of it, I tried using the AMD driver package you linked.  I ran the installer and it didn't find any compatible hardware.  I was able to update the driver manually through Device Manager by pointing it at the package install folder.  However, whenever I try to shut down the computer, it crashes and reboots.  This doesn't happen with the 6.14.10.6606 driver I linked above.

I just purchased another card off of Ebay.  According to the labels on the card, it's a Radeon 9550XL.  I can't find any information on what the difference is between a 9550 and a 9550XL.

Sorry, I had missed the link you posted above, it's definitely the right one.
