Title: Ultimarc Ultrastik 360 with front mount restrictor kit - help needed
Post by: crispux3 on February 09, 2015, 12:00:38 am
Hi.

I have searched and searched - google, every pic in the control panel database, the wiki a little bit, and many threads here, and I could have sworn that there were pictures of the U360 stick with the front mount restrictor kit installed. I just bought one, have installed the long shaft and replacement spring, but now have a couple of questions.

1.) Are there any pictures or explanations regarding the use of the front mount restrictor kit? (on this site, or other arcade sites you're aware of?)

2.) Is it possible to use the dust washer with the restrictor kit installed? It seems to me that unless I have both sides of the restrictor off, the washer will not lay flat against the control panel, and there doesn't look to be a good way to put the dust washer under the control panel either. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

No, the dust washer is not used with this kit.

There's a picture on this page of my build blog http://dahlstrom.sytes.net/techblog/?p=169 (http://dahlstrom.sytes.net/techblog/?p=169) (click on picture to enlarge).  It's the middle stick with the blue ball.  Dust washer is not used.

I was looking for some kind of video review or even a review of those top mounted restrictors, but I had no idea they're protruding through the panel like that! Now that's a little bit of a bummer as it looks like neither under nor over solution is the perfect one  :(
Now I definitely need to see how the rotary function will turn out to be.

I didn't use the front mount restrictor for my primary sticks for aesthetic reasons and because I like the conventional circular restrictor most of the time.  However, I really, really like having a central stick with the front restrictor for those times when it is useful.  Normally, I leave it in its 4-way configuration (restrictor in).  The reason it protrudes, of course, is so that you can grasp the restrictor and rotate it.  So in literally half-a-second, I can twist it into 4-way diagonal mode for Q*Bert, or remove it entirely for an analog game like Star Wars with full throw.  Since the majority of 4-way and analog games only need one stick, configuring just a center stick with the front restrictor provides the best of all worlds.

If you're particular installation allows it, and if you're going to leave it in 4-way mode most of the time you could add a washer or spacer between the stick and the panel to recess it to a more acceptable/flush depth.  Your biggest issue would be that if you wanted to switch it to 8-way or take it out for analog it would be hard to get your fingers on the restrictor pieces.

So that would be a possibility then? I could rig some kind of hook/tweezers to pull out the pieces? Would a dust washer be able to fully hide the hole when fully removed, with a joystick at it's furthest from the center?

Is there any kind of video/video review I could see how this all looks and how it works? I honestly been looking for it on you tube and can't find. It's almost hard to believe no one ever reviewed it.

Now that I've seen what the front-mount restrictor looks like on a panel, I would certainly recess it so the bushing part sat flush, and then I'd either chamfer the inner edge of the mounting hole about 3/8 or 1/2" - or widen it altogether with a Forstner bit.  Lift the dust washer, lift out and rotate the bushing.

Gotta have that dust washer goodness.
