Title: 2 player CP layout - Angle players toward screen?
Post by: MrDetermination on February 02, 2015, 08:28:53 pm
I'm working on my first CP layout and I'm toying with the idea of putting a slight angle on the CP's front and on P1 and P2's controls.  Seems like it would be more comfortable.  Is this just fru fru ergonomic mumbo jumbo?  Disadvantage to this approach?  Do people stick with the straight on because of tradition?

If you choose to angle the buttons, don't angle the sticks for the same reason that you don't angle the P3/P4 sticks on a 4-player build.

 :stupid What Scott said.

Don't slightly angle them. Up is up and down is down. Slightly crooked up is not up.

That is a terrible horrible plan. Only one game angled it's joysticks on a two player panel and it's a crap game. Don't do it. There is no reason. I know we all sound like those stone faces in Labyrinth and we really are just doing our job but, "take heed and go no further for the path you take will lead to certain destruction!"

;D  Yeah well, I figured you couldn't all be crazy and I should probably ask.

Thanks!

I think the people on this message board overreact and smack down too many things.

This is not one of them.

Angled joysticks are a mistake.
This is a fact.

People intuitively move the joystick in the direction they want the character to move regardless of the angle they're standing at.
You can become accustomed to angled joysticks after using them for a while, but guests will struggle with it.
Even if you are accustomed to them, I bet when flusterd you still screw up and push the wrong direction.

It's like asking if you should wire the steering wheel in your driving game backwards.
Sure you can become accustomed to it, but it's wrong and other people will find it annoying.

If anything, I'd only angle the buttons and then only for player 2.

Lots of Japanese candy cabinets (e.g. Astro City) twist the buttons (not the stick) of player 2 slightly counter-clockwise. Most of the time, P2 will stand further to the right, while P1 will be in front of the screen.
