Title: Control panel controller board question
Post by: MrDetermination on February 02, 2015, 10:39:04 am
I have a couple 8 ways (pl1 and 2) and then a four way (pl1 again).  No spinner or trackball.  Does the four way stick have to be player three or can it be wired to also be player 1?  Will the ipac2 work?

Yes, the iPac2 will work. Just wire the 4 way stick up to the corresponding inputs for the P1 8 way. The 4 way stick will be live unless you wire up a switch or something.

So just double wire P1 on the ipac?  Either stick completes the circuit basically?

Yep - only problem with doing it this way is if someone moves the 8 way while you're using the 4 way - But in game you are only ever going to be using one or the other so having them both wired to the same input is not a problem. ( I did the same on my robotron bartop with the 2nd joystick and player buttons 3-6 since the zero delay encoder would not have enough inputs for 2 joysticks and 12 buttons but I wanted to play dual joystick single player games and also have 6 buttons and 1 joystick for other games along with the 6 admin buttons (p1&2 coin and start and a pause and escape)

Thanks guys.  Presumably the same couple apply to P1 button one and P1 button two?  (Save myself some config later)

You mean this old diagram?   ;D

And this one for "backward wiring" piggyback of two buttons -- MAME and pinball.

Heh.  Thanks!  But the second diagram melted my brain a bit.  What is the point in that?  And where does the positive connect up to the controller board?

The second diagram is more for someone with a Mini-Pac (http://www.ultimarc.com/minipac.html)-style harness who wants to avoid cutting up the original harness or for someone who wants one button press to trigger two separate inputs (MagnaSave/Upper Flippers) without using diodes to isolate the inputs.

The "controller board" is usually referred to as an encoder.

If you were wiring for P1 Button4/left flipper button like the first entry in the table, the wire marked encoder would connect to input "1SW4" on the IPac and the "upside down christmas trees" (schematic symbol for ground) would connect to the daisy-chain ground.   ;D

Electrically, it is the same as running a separate wire from each microswitch (P1B4 and left flipper) to the IPac 1SW4 input and connecting the daisy-chain ground to the other tab lke the first diagram.

GOT IT!   ;D  I had to read it 4 times and I have no use for that but I got it!  Thanks.

In my case though I can just do this, I think.

Other than the daisy-chain ground (#3) that isn't shown in your diagram, you've got the idea.

More details here (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=FAQ#How_do_I_wire_microswitches_to_an_encoder.3F) on how to wire microswitches to an encoder.

One other minor detail, the microswitch direction labels on your 8-way stick are backward.

OHHH that inverted thing makes nothing but sense thanks to that illustration!  Thank you!

Already had my head around the Ground loop, I think.  The whole damn panel could share a daisy chain ground if I felt like it, right?

Yes.

Prefab daisy-chain grounds are also great time savers.   ;D

Thanks!  Already ordered from Ultimarc.

Check out the "How To" videos here:  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,80229.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,80229.0.html)

The first two are on how to wire the buttons.  The second video goes in depth on how to daisy chain the ground wires.

Good luck!
