Thankfully it has proper mounting wholes.  That was a gross oversight for the initial release.

Looks a bit more interesting than the earlier versions but they should have gone with a bit more of a higher clocked CPU (800Mhz. is still a bit low) though it being a quad core should help some. Interesting that Microsoft is planning on it being able to run win10 (will be interesting to see How MAME and some of the Windows based Front ends run on it.)

I wonder how Minecraft will run on it?  On Windows 10.  Probably well since MS bought it.  Who has ordered one?

I can run Minecraft on my Pi B+ in Raspian, so I would assume it's possible in W10 if it's been optimized for it.

It will be some kind of Windows 10 Embedded without a (desktop) UI, just a (power) shell...

The article explicitly states it will run Minecraft.

 ::)

Nice to see these things getting up to the processing power of my dusty iPhone 3GS.  It may finally displace the original Xbox....

Damn.
I just bought the $20 dual core android stick.
guess i'm now buying this.
I bet it will run Wahcade just fine.

I installed wahcade/mahcade on my original rpi B & it ran but the CPU was pegged the whole time & it ran so ungodly slow that it was completely un-usable.

Edit: yeah. gonna be a while before I get mym hands on one of these.
sold out everywhere.
well it seems so.
The one vendor's site is actually off line so i'm assuming it's being hammered as hard as the RPI forums (which I can't get onto either) :laugh2:

Hmm. Perhaps all those mini cabs I build (someday, maybe) won't be running of Plug and Play TV games. I always meant to dive into the original Pi but the Linux thing scared me off I think.

Don't feel bad.  My pi hasn't been used because my video solution has been kinda janky.

Makes you wonder will it or the winbook tablet that micro center had for $60 ( http://www.microcenter.com/product/439773/TW700_Tablet_-_Black (http://www.microcenter.com/product/439773/TW700_Tablet_-_Black) ) run better since the winbook had :
Quote
CPU Type   Baytrail-TZ3735G
CPU Core   Quad-Core
CPU Speed 1.33GHz
CPU Brand  Intel
and includes a 7" touch screen display and the AC adapter and battery pack which look to be add ons for the PI 2. vs the pi 2s Broadcom 900MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor

I knew there was another outlet for them.
Thanks!

They say they are awaiting arrival.
so might as just order it now.
edit: or not. $10 for shipping? Really?
the 7" win-tablet above me only costs $6 to ship & it has glass in it.
It's not the $10 itself, it's the principle. :soapbox:

One thing that leaves a bad taste in my mouth is the fact that only about 6 months ago, the RPi people were claiming that a more powerful model wouldn't be available until 2017. However, this new model must surely have been in a fairly advanced stage of development at that time, so that statement was basically a lie designed to protect their existing product lines. IMHO, anyone who has bought a RPi in the past few months has the right to feel a little cheated.

I'm also disapponted that the RPi foundation has consistently failed to deliver on the software front. Ever since the RPi first appeared, the foundation has issued numerous vague promises about how they were working with Broadcom to produce open source drivers for the GPU, and/or to release data on how to program the GPU's registers so that the open source community could write their own drivers. But nothing ever seems to materialise. Last time I checked (which was admittedly several months ago) the RPi was still dependent upon a closed source binary blob, and it still didn't have a hardware accelerated desktop (although I understand that one is in the pipeline). As far as I'm concerned that's just not good enough. I don't understand how SOC manufacturers think it's acceptable to release a SOC without providing drivers for the SOC's target operating system.

However, if I try to put all of those misgivings aside and just concentrate on the hardware, I have to say that this latest iteration looks pretty damn good. I think they might finally have nailed it this time. Pretty much every issue I had with the original Pi (apart from poor software support) has been fixed. If I'm being super picky, the lack of a VGA port still irritates me (why can't they at least provide some VGA header pins?) but that's not a deal breaker.

Ive been looking at the new Pi all weekend. I see where amazon.com has a pi with 900mhz quad core and 1 gig of ram, but for 60 bucks.
people leave comments that price is too high.
About the winbook, I bought one, was thinking of making a mini cab and use it.
It's pretty neat.
Has a regular usb and a micro usb ports.
I plugged a small usb hub in, plugged keyboard and mouse and thumb drive into the hub and ran NES emulator with no problem.
I don't have mame on the thumb drive but testing it and mala is on the to do list.
I like the winbook, but I haven't figured out yet how to get the text to display bigger (I keep trying to enlarge it like on my iphone).
I am also wondered how to add an external power on switch, I really don't want to take this thing apart and try to hack it.
Powering it down will be easy, because I had a AHK shutdown script on the thumb drive and it shut it down very nicely.
As for using this on a mame cab, the touchscreen and camera may be overkills, but for the price I guess one could live with that, plus the camera may come in handy to take random selfies while playing??

I'm a tad bummed that the number of GPIO pins didn't increase. They are lying stating that there are 40 GPIO pins. It's a 40-pin header. There are 26 actual GPIO pins. Beagle Bone Black has a whopping 65 actual GPIO pins, but only 14 of them are useable unless you disable hdmi output. Both units need a few more GPIO pins if to be used in our hobby for a 2-player multi button setup without buying a seperate controller. Vga output would be cool too. A hdmi/vga signal couls be sent over the bbb's GPIO pins and a dongle made for appropriate signal. Do away with a dedicated port.

How hard of a push does the power button take -- Perhaps you could actually use a physical mod rather than hack it. (ie. a hole drilled in the right place to use a rod to physically push the power button) - Or since you work on automating things maybe a small motorized mech that pushes it when you press the on button you add.  :dunno

You might be on to something there JDFan!

Back to the R Pi 2:
I checked MCM electronics and they have the Pi2 with 900 MHz proc. and 1 gig ram for 35 bucks, so it does look like the people on amazon are trying to rip. (Thank goodness they allow buyer comments!)
Unfortunately, MCM is out of stock right now.

You guys got me just about deciding to buy one of these.
Does paying out money ever stop for this hobby??
LOL

EDIT: Cheapest shipping from MCM is $15.99 OUCH!

I'm planning on not ever shutting mine down, just letting it go to sleep, then any button press will wake it up.  The only issue I think may be if the battery runs to low it may power off beyond what usb wake will reach.  Will find out after I get the little cab built I guess, worst case is I'll need to open the back door and press the power button when that happens, I am leaving it so I can do that.

I too will likely pick up a pi2 and make an even smaller cab, maybe 4 or 5" screen, don't want to go crazy.

I closed the browser when I saw the shipping from mcm.
I went with Newark.
Even with shipping and tax it was still a few bucks cheaper.
But their out of stock also. Seems everyone is.
Mine has an expected ship date of the 24 the this month.
Nobody saw this coming.
Willing to bet they were forced to release it due to the c1 quad core board for the same price and others whose prices are going down.

Also, after I left that rpi2 in the shopping cart mcm sent me  %10 off code to complete the purchase.
But they will have to do better than that.

I've been using the Raspberry Pi B+ with RetroPie (http://blog.petrockblock.com/retropie/ (http://blog.petrockblock.com/retropie/)) on it. It plays most MAME stuff pretty solidly. All the classics worked pretty well. I did overclock the Pi to 800Mhz or so, though.

The trick is finding older ROMs for it, since they must be 0.37b5 versions.

The Raspberry Pi 2, with it's quad core, probably isn't going to help anything, since MAME won't take advantage of the cores. It's an exciting product for other projects, but for MAME emulation, less so. It should overclock some, which is helpful, I suppose.

I've taken my classic B to 1000mhz no issues and the architecture advancement itself may help it with advanced mame.
Or may not.
Reports on the RPI forums are unplayable mame roms on original rpi are now playable.
I'm looking forward to seeing how advanced mame runs.
