Title: Ivan Stewart's Off Road steering wheel problems
Post by: TheSherman8or on January 31, 2015, 05:14:52 pm
I just purchased a mint condition Ivan Stewart's Off Road game at an auction. The middle steering wheel turns to the right fine but when turned to the left it reads as it is turned right or it jogs back and forth from counter clockwise to clockwise in the test screen. Has anyone had this issue or know what the problem is? Thanks ;D

Take a look at pages 9, 15 (shows the optical board), and 42 of the owner's manual here (http://www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/S/SuperOffRoad.pdf) for a good place to start.

Also make sure there isn't some lint intermittently blocking LD1==>LD4 or LD2==>LD3.

In more layman's terms, the wheel speed is determined by a slotted wheel allowing infrared light to pass from an emitter to a receiver on the other side of the wheel.
The direction is determined by the difference in timing between two sets of these emitters and receivers.  They are offset, so moving in one direction generates a different pattern then moving in the other direction.

So most likely:
An IR emitter has died
An IR emitter isn't getting power
Something (like lint or fuzz) is blocking an IR emitter or receiver

less likely, but one of these components could have also been bent out of position.
