Title: Mame to Jamma Conversion
Post by: PaddyB on January 17, 2015, 06:30:52 pm
I am looking to convert my homemade Mame Cabinet to accepting Jamma Boards.
Who can tell me what I need.

I currently have a CRT Monitor (would replace if required).
IPAC4 control interface board with USB output. (believe this would become obsolete)
Old PC. (would also become obsolete)

My main reason is I just cant get over windows lurking in the background. Somehow my toddler on his chair pushing all the buttons at once manages to regularly crash Mame. I also have had little luck getting all my controls mapped the way I would like. My friends complain when playing games like Donkey-Kong. Mario stops walking if they fold up-left, instead of just left. etc etc.

My cabinet is for 2 players, has two positions with an 8 way stick and six buttons. 1 and 2 player start. (14 buttons total).

My guess is that I need a powersupply.
Game Card (60-1) etc. But I'm not really sure what else.
Any info would be great. My must haves are Mario bros, and some 6 button fighters.

Thanks guys,
PaddyB

Seems like it would be easier to change the default IPac keymap to remove keys like Ctrl, Alt, and any others that might cause trouble with Windows.

Remember to also remove any potentially troublesome shifted function keys like Tab (menu), especially if you have dedicated admin buttons.

We can definitely help you sort out your key issues and hide the operating system first. See if you like it before spending money on a 60-1 conversion.

Put the time into fixing your MAME setup. If you want to play on a 60-1 AND play fighters, you won't be able to do so without physically rotating the monitor each time. Work on those key issues first.

I didn't realize the bit about rotating the monitor. That would be very undesirable. Maybe some more time on the key config is warranted. Its just so much more fun for me to fix stuff with tools than a keyboard. ;) (Tradesman genes.)

1) The "crash" I refer to is while selecting/loading a game. Sometimes, if too many buttons are hit (it seems) that I get an "emulator already running, terminate process" window that pops up. Does this sound familiar to anyone.

2) My next question is with key assignments.
How does mame know to use the "default" key set, or the "this game only" keyset?

3) How do I config mario's (in donkley kong) inputs to work more smoothly with an 8 way stick? I know I can give multiple key assignments, as well as "not" keys. But I haven't managed to keep him from stuttering when a diagnal position is held (ie anything other than up down left or right). Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Paddy B
