A year or so ago we bought a digital camera. Not the top of the line, it's a Fuji FinePix 3800, but it's damn skippy for what we wanted to do with it. We figured that this would be one investment that would be well worth our while.
Fast forward to last night. I stepped out to get some sandwiches from D'Angelos. My wife was going to get the boys dressed in some nice clothes and take some pictures for the Christmas cards.
I get home, and she says that Riley (our youngest son (1 year)) dropped the camera. I ask, "What was he doing with the camera?" and she says that she put it on a desk in the living room, and he reached up and grabbed it.
The camera itself is fine, except for the focusing unit. Somewhere inside a gear has jammed, and it can't move the lens. I took it apart to attempt to fix it, but the lens appears to be one unit. I think it's made to replace the unit as opposed to repairing it. I certainly can't figure out how to take the darn thing apart.
I suppose if this were a one-time occurance I could let this go, chalk it up to a moment of mental disfunction. We all do it sometimes.
But stuff like this happens all the time. It's like she doesn't think before acting.
She had this bright idea to set up the Christmas tree in the living room. Now, the living room is one of two rooms our 1 year old can actually get to. I suggested the dining room, which is just off the living room, and it's still pretty. I knew that he would play with the ornaments (breaking them in the process) and/or chew on the lights, etc etc. Her response? "Oh, no he won't. He's old enough to know better."
So I said, "Why not. Let's set up the tree here and watch him."
Five minutes later the tree was moved into the dining room.
I'm just really ticked right now, and needed to let off some steam. That camera is/was my baby, one of the few decent things I own.
Anyone know of a good place to fix digital cameras, or get replacement parts?

Somehow, she knows you typed that. You're in trouble.
In my relationship, I am (admittedly) the one who does stuff without thinking. Drive myself nuts with it. I still have the scar from the time I decided to open a bag of skittles with a butcher's knife.

Heh...I don't hide how I feel.

Golly!

Cut all her hair off, or throw out all her clothes, or something truly insane like in Mommy Dearest.
Beat her with a wire hanger!
Take out your frustration like they would in the 50s with a good old fashioned wife-beatin'.
I'm the devil

I know the feeling.
I have 3 kids, 7, 5, 2. Girl boy girl.
My 2 year old breaks DVD's, CD's, PS/2 games. most anything we own that she likes is up too high for even me to reach.
Kids break stuff, make noise, won't eat, won't sleep, but for some reason, we continue to make them and love them.
My son can whip me at PS/2 snowboarding (SSX), that makes me :'(

Alright, you guys are really freakin' me out now. I have a little one, our first, on the way in April. My wife is xact same as Peal's in that she MUST do things either wrong or contrary (same thing :) ) to what I suggest. She has two personal favorites.
1. Things, mostly big heavy things, MUST go in the middle of the best path to every room.
2. Gravity does not exist. My wife will take a 4 ft vase and balance it on a pencil next to the door and then argue with me that it actually will NOT fall over and break.
3. I lied, she has three, the third is a combination of #1 and #2.
Lord knows I love this girl to death but I really think I understand why the man generally dies first. It is to get some peace and quiet!
Now we have a daughter on the way in April and the whole thing is going to be in surround sound. uuugggg.
I love my arcade, I love my arcade, I love my arcade......

;)
I'm sure all families go through the same situations. I was a terror at 1 yr old.

Since the camera is demo'ed anyways, I would take it all apart--as much as physically possible and see if you can fix it. failing that, I tend to strip the gears and motors out to be used in future mame related projects ;D As far as the missus and the kids are concerned start buying all your stuff at walmart but keep a stash of all the really cool stuff in a secret cave you have constructed under the yard...

I did take it apart. First thing.
It took me about two hours. Reassembling took about 45 minutes.
No joy. It's the lens unit that's FUBAR'd. It appears that when it goes wonky, they just replace the whole unit. I could not get it apart to realign the gears. Everything else is working fine.
It's over a year old, and so it's out of warranty.

Drop it again.

Drop it again.
Nah, I won't do that. I do have an idea to get a working camera again, though.

I think fuji just makes a crappy camera peale. I have a fujifilm finepix 2600z that has the same problem. It works and I can still view the pictures stored on the flash card as well as download them to my computer but the damn lens wont focus or go back in. Its been like that since September. I too tried taking abart and beating it as well as dropping it. Nothing. Sucks cause it was our only camera. Wife bought it for me Valentines Day 2002 , broke September 2003. POS , big fat honken POS!!
-
Just as an afterthought I did a quick google search on 'fujifilm focus error' and got many results of the same problem happening to alot of people. Seems like fuji has a problem that they are not willing to admit , so basically they are selling $300-$400 disposable cameras with a lifespan of 12-18 months 8(.
-
I am not suggesting ANYTHING here, but do they still sell that exact same model, and does yours still look fine?
Remember, I am not suggesting anything here.

The camera has always been good. Why would you call the camera a POS when it was dropped and no longer works?
-
Ours wasn't drop. It wasn't mishandled or abused. We used it to film my sons birthday party and it went ka-poot. At first we thought it was just low batteries so we set it aside. The next I put new batteries in and nothing. Just that dumb focus error. And after reading alot of reviews online from people with the same brand of camera [fujifilm finepix] it happened to them also. No abuse or drops , just stopped
-
I was reading the same about that camera. Interesting.
Well, I can't claim that. Perhaps it would have died, but I'll never know now.
-
Wow I guess I got lucky my wife dropped our digital camcorder about five feet onto the carpet. And to our amazment the thing works like it was never dropped.
-
My wife was going to get the boys dresses in some nice clothes and take some pictures for the Christmas cards.
My only question is why are the boys wearing dresses? ;D
Sorry, couldn't resist! ::)
-
CCM, I was just about to ask the same ;D
-
Bah, 'S' and 'D' are right next to each other.
However, there IS a picture of my oldest when he was about three months old in a dress. My wife was working for Carters Childrenswear and wanted to try some girl clothes on.
He looks awful. He's definitely all boy.
Can't wait until he's older and I can use the picture as leverage. ;)

I dropped my digital camera the night I got my arcade cab... I took some pictures of it, and sat it on the planar, and somehow it moved like six inches to the edge and then fell off (or in all my excitement, i put it too close to the edge :-()
at least i have a good guess at what the problem is now... only question is if sony puts their focus units where you can get to them...

Kids break your toys. That's the major reason why I don't have any.

Our first was a suprise. We were married a month when we found she was pregnant.
Our next wasn't. We wanted the kids close in age so they'd play nicely together.

ROFL! Just you wait!
By the way, nice job on the coin door paint stripping article.

Ah man , if you dont want kids just so your "toys" don't get broke, thats a sad outlook on life dude. :'( My 3 kids bring me more joy then any toy i have ever or will ever own for that fact. Don't take this the wrong way and i'm not saying you inparticular, because i don't know you at all enough to make a judment about you, But from my experience with people in my life the ones who say " i dont ever want kids" are some of the more selfish people i have ever known and most of them aren't very likeable in a lot of ways. They also tend to be hermits and somewhat reclusive and antisocial. In truth they also have a very warped way of looking at life and feel like others owe them something all the time.
Having kids will teach you more about yourself and how to be a more giving, caring person and something that just makes one better person overall.
If anyone disagrees with me, that fine. This is just my oppinion after all, but a very observant oppinion at that. :) Simple rule is, if you don't want kids to get their curious little hands on something of yours, then buy them something that "looks" like yours but was cheap as hell and tell them that "this is yours....this is mine, you play with yours!" LOL.
Ok, im done :)
Next?............
groooooovy ~ :D

I disagree ( I don't know why I'm bumping this....I was just directed here from another thread and read this). I say, if you don't want kids you likely won't be a very good parent so don't have 'em. That's not meant as an insult, but, you know....if you're all into plants you'll likely take care of them well, where as, if you have plants, but never really wanted them in the first place you'll probably forget to water them and stuff.
There ain't no shortage of people in the world. There's just no reason in the world to feel obligated to have kids. And frankly, I think I'm with groovytuesday on my personal feelings about kids. I love them and am excited to have a couple someday. But some people can't stand them. Even a lot of people who have kids can't stand kids....and they commonly keep having more.
If you don't like kids feel free to let other people raise the stinky little brats. :)

"Go play with your brother, thats why we got him..."
-
No arguing about the selfish part. I'm a greedy little miser. :D
However, I work in a high school, my wife works in an elementary school. We have several neices & nephews who we enjoy spending time with. There's no shortage of children in our lives, but we enjoy having quiet time at home.
