Looking for feed back on an idea before diving in to a new build.
Lot's of fun was had building my Vigolix clone and I've been looking for a reason to build another. With my mother in-law coming to visit, this is a good time to have some stuff brought over from the US. Was thinking of doing a dedicated tux of math command. It's a missile defense like game to teach children math. http://tux4kids.alioth.debian.org/tuxmath/ (http://tux4kids.alioth.debian.org/tuxmath/)
I'm a teacher and I could get an old pc, display, and lumber for free, if I found a teacher at the elementary campus that would take it. I would probably use a R-pi or an old PC running linux configured to boot into tux Math.
I would want the CP to be bright, colorful, and as simple as possible. Was thinking of using some square led lit push buttons. Below is a pic of my first draft of the lay out. I would need to add a exit button and I think one other admin button. Pleas ignore the ugly colors this is just putting the concept down.

Which type of square LED buttons are you planning on using?
The 5 and 8 keys may not have room for the microswitches unless you increase the spacing.

Or you could go with using Sanwa buttons (not lit) with vinyl decals for the numbers.

Cheap-o buttons from China are perfect for something like this. Large, light up, and you shouldn't have an issue matrixing them as the switches are different shaped that standard arcade button microswitches.

Was thinking something like the one Lechuck sent the link for. The goal is to keep them tight as the components will allow. I'll have to play around with the design when they get here.

If I was building it for just one or two kids this would be a good solutions. It will probably end in a class room full of 3rd graders so it needs to be built tuff.
