Title: Valyrian Steel Weecade
Post by: jugger18 on January 12, 2015, 11:01:32 am
So I have enough leftover wood and extra joysticks/encoders from the last build to build a bartop.  Weecade it is.  I am a huge GoT fan so that will be the theme.  I am leaning towards a Stark Vs Lannister theme.  Maybe Sigils on the sides although I also love Arya and Tyrion.  I have been playing around on the marquee and have this so far.  Any thoughts?

It's a shame where the Lanister valerian steel swords came from otherwise you could do an "Ice" vs "Widow's Wail" theme.
I like the GOT theme for an idea. If you stick with that text you might want to try and clean up the spacing in the font, just do the v, al, and yrian as separate words then push them closer together.

Shame you need to do a bartop if you want to put it at work, I just moved my fullsize cab next to my desk last month.

love GoT. I would do a the stark banner on one side and the Lannister on the other. That is if the Lannister banner looked cooler.

Personally I would go with a theme around this:

I think this one's definitely getting better. I'd maybe look at using a real cloud or smoke image and see if there is a metal look you could do on the letters instead of the plain gray.

My amazon order came in last night.  4in cheapo pyle car speakers and a lepai 2020 amp.  Hoping to have some time tonight to start building.  My side panels have been cut for a week or so now.  Need to batten it and install.  I also need to decide what PC to use.  I am tempted to pull the mb/cpu out of the upright as it is a micro atx board so it has a very small footprint (AMD fusion e350).  I have a dell vostro 200 I could toss into that.

Got a little done last night.  I had to decide on monitor.  My choices were 17in lcd, 19in dell lcd that has power issues, 19in widescreen or 22in widescreen.  I decided to tear into the 19in dell.  Found a bulging cap so desoldered it and ordered a new one from amazon, should be here saturday.  If the cap fixes it I will use that and start cutting the central panels to width.
Question:
I plan on making my own wiring harness for this and using a minimus (possibly ordering the kade DIY - encoder).  What guage wires?

Hey, for the Marquee, have you considered taking queues from the title sequence of the show?

Like, something like a blade going left to right with the Valyrian Steel as the title...fire and ice somewhere...

Just a thought as an alternative.

While not for the marquee I had thought of something similar for the CP with a horizontal sword and the hilt cross forming the directional for the joystick.  But I suck at art so not really sure what to do.  For the sides I was thinking the dire wolf on one side with "Winter is Coming" Along the bottom and the Lannister Lion on the other with "Hear Me Roar" along its bottom.

Sure, but it's rarely mentioned. Perhaps once or twice in the books, but never mentioned in the TV show. People seeing your bartop will most likely ask you what that saying is from, and I guess the millage on how many times you wanna explain that is up to you. ;)

I'm assuming since you said you're a huge GoT fan, you're more of the TV show fan?  Personally I would have chosen a Fire and Ice theme, since it's more general to the GoT story, rather than committing to two houses. Especially since Valyrian Steel swords were owned by more than just the Lannisters and Starks. Just sayin'.

Oh, if we're really geeking out here, the Lanisters and Starks haven't both owned Valerian Steel swords at the same time for many many generations.

I do agree that a Fire and Ice theme has real potential, and the opening-credits-style marquee would be bad ass.

Stopped by home depot at lunch to pick up a 2x4 sheet of 1/2in MDF and as I was leaving a dude in the parking lot gave me 2 2x4 sheets of 1/2in sanded plywood.  Faith in humanity slowly getting restored.

If I went with a fire and ice them I would think doing fire on one side, ice on the other, and maybe have it say "A song of fire and ice" across the bottom front wraparound of the CP...Thoughts?  Although I have no idea what I would do for the fire and ice sides

CP question.  My cp will be made of 1/2in mdf.  I have a zippy I plan on using but it has the short stick.  what is the best way to mount.  Route the top?  If so what screws?  Do you then fill and cover with vinyl cp art or just put the vinyl right over the base?

:laugh2:       LOVE Dinklage!  Just watched Knights of Badassdom - he made the movie.

Anyway - with a 1/2" CP I'd not bother routing at all.  Just undermount and be done with it.  When I use a 3/4" CP, I route to 1/2" and then use T-nuts to mount.  Carriage bolts would work just fine as well.

Now I have to work on the art.
