Title: Should a 2015 "I completed my project. I posted a pic and a link" be made?
Post by: Generic Eric on January 06, 2015, 03:47:43 pm
Does the community see a benefit to having a "I completed my project in 2015 and posted a pic with a link to the project thread" independent from the current thread?  Visitors could add to the current thread for projects completed before 2015.

The thread has done well.  I just think there may be some utility when it comes to searching for recent projects.

I say yes, but I'm not a mod and can't watch over it.

I've set the poll to run for 26 days, so that if people are still searching for nominations by then, they can answer the poll.  We can have a dialog on PM, but for this thread, I'd prefer you answer with a vote.

Just make it, Eric.  Makes sense to me.

Then I sort of feel like a dick for posting my completed projects from years ago.   Wouldn't one think that the newest projects would be the newest posts of the thread anyway?

No no no

It has been working great.

I think a single thread is fine.  It's working great and I love that some of you guys are plugging in old projects.  I've seen a lot of projects in the thread that I'd not seen before.

I think the current thread is great, but maybe going forward there is an annual one that can be consulted at nomination time to more easily weigh in on the projects you'd like to see represented. The top post for the 2015 completed projects thread (which should maybe be a sticky) could include a link to the previous thread and in 2016 the new one could link to the old 2 etc. This way there is still a single gateway to all the finished projects but the main topic only contains the projects from the current year and we can use it as a reference for the annual nominations.

In the Army we have this saying, "don't make an MOS out of it" it means that you're doing something in such a way that its becoming your whole job (Military Occupational Specialty).  It's not a good thing.  Like if you're taking forever mopping the damn floor because you're changing water every time it gets a little murky you'd be making an MOS out of it - and a fool out of yourself.  I made an MOS out of the UCAs.  Didn't mean to but there ya go.   Take it from me, over think this documentation/curatorship/tracking malarkey and you'll have "regerts".

The horse is already out of the barn on the UCAs, it's what we have and I think a lot of the results are worth while, but just consider me a cautionary tale as you push forward in crazyness.

Keep the thread you have, the last post is newest.  People post date complete in it already.  Don't make a MOS out of it ;)

Where is PL1 telling everyone to use the ---smurfing--- wiki, so I can agree with him for a change!

Actually, the wiki would be optimal because you could catergorize builds by year in a much easier fashion.

This isn't about circumventing the wiki, more so a way for people to declare their project finished.

Everybody already knows my position -- I'm allowing others to make the case for their preference.   ;D

Louis Tully and I have recently added a number of builds to the wiki.

LMK if anyone else wants to add their build or contribute other content like your 4-player game list that morphed into the Multi-Player Games (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Multi-Player_Games) list.

If only someone had thought of that.   ::)

Seriously though, it's easy to add links to existing build pages to the "Builds (by year)" page.

I'm hoping to find a handfull (8-12?) of good examples from each past year to show the progression of the hobby.

I didnt mean to circumvent it , I meant to use a better tool for the job.   Use the 1 one thread to declare you're done, then it gets added to the wiki by year / type / etc

Thanks Eric for setting up that thread in the first place.   Having it this year made looking for UCA nominations much, much easier.  Not only that it is a great way to quickly review finished projects.

I'd seen it work on thewayiplay.com years back.  I suggested it then, but it didn't take on.  When yamesuta suggested it I suggested something similar I said I didn't think it would work, but it has worked surprisingly well.
