So my wife asked me, can you speed up the Ms. Pacman like the ones she has been playing lately?
I told her I did not know and that originally that was how Ms. Pacman was played.
So is there a way to do this, I looked at dip switches and did not see anything.

The only sped up Ms Pacman I know of is the "Champion Edition"...
I don't even remember where I got mine, but it's hella fun!
Until you get to the 3rd or 4th maze... Then it gets hard...
The maze zigs & zags like crazy & you've got to be seriously quick to get it down.

You have to enable it in the cheats section. It's accessible by hitting the "tab" button. I had the same problem. Also, holding down the P1B1 should also speed it up as long as it's being pressed. However, it's easier to just enable the cheat so you don't always have to hold the button.

Negative, the cheat just speeds up ms. pac man, the ghosts and items go slow like normal. I've been looking for a fast pacman for a bit, with no luck. Havn't heard of Champion edition, I'll look into that :)

Would this be the "overclocking" setting found in the '~' key options on some games? It depends on how the game was programmed whether this would speed it up or not.
You could try replacing your computer's clock-backup battery with a 9-volt...
(j/k - don't actually do that - someone just suggested it to a guy trying to get Quake 2 to run on his 286 in another forum)
You could also try playing it while really drunk. It might feel faster then. :)

We called the speedup upgrade a "zip chip" (I suppose it is still called that). Never seen the likes of it in MAME, though.

I don't really understand what people are talking about when this subject is brought up. I never saw a Pac or Ms Pac where the ghosts move fast from the first board. I've got the Twobit add on in my Ms Pac cabinet and it's exactly like every arcade version I've ever seen. Well, I've seen different hacks..but..what I mean is...if Ms. Pac-Man moves fast on board one, the ghosts will eventually catch up with her as you progress through boards. Has someone seen one where the ghosts are sped up from the begining as well as the Pac?
To Speed up your Pac, you have to enable cheats. Once that's done go into your Dip Switch settings and turn the speedup cheat ON.
If that's not what you're looking for then I don't have a clue what you are. :)

I think the Zip chip is what I am talking about.
The ghosts move the same speed on the first board as they always do. But the Ms' she moves extremely fast.
I think it evens the odds of there not being patterns available to her, ala Pacman. Or at least I thought people said there were no patterns for Ms. Pacman.

This is the ONLY way i've ever seen the game sped up.
As far as paterns, you can certainly create some patterns. I noticed that I do it last night when I was playing, but it's not like they'll work the same every time. I can get a lot of dots off the board (with the speed up) in a pattern before the ghosts are all out of the box, but at some point in each level I have to start improvising. Of course, i've never played pac-man with patterns either. It's cheating if you ask me. So I've never even tried.

Can anyone play the 4th key without a pattern? My goodness, they would just about have to be a God, to just wing, the no turning blue monsters, and then at the 9th or 10th key if I remember when pac slows down ouch.
Oh well, I guess someone can after all they made a pattern for those boards, but they would have to be really good.

Billy Mitchell can. :)

I never see him state he does not use a pattern. I have a hard time believing he does not. The ghosts follow the same pattern at the start and everyone has a little bit of a pattern to start it out. To eat them all, well that would be tougher, but he almost has to have a pattern to do that.
-
There may not be a pattern but I do recall my youth days where my mom met a man at Chuck n Cheese. I saw him demo how to get the ghosts "stuck" in the transport route where you go from the top to the bottom and vise versa. He does this for every level and then eats them all. After you eat them all, the trick is getting the ghosts stuck in it again. The guy explained how but I was just a little boy and deaf to my ears. I will never forget that there is a way for getting the ghosts corralled in a spot.

ok well, if your wife just wanted to have a faster pacman game, she might like Hyper Pacman - it's a newer re-make with all kinds of powerups and stuff - hardly similar to the original game though.

What you're talking about is called a hardware speedup, it's not emulated. It is not as common anymore because the speedup chip is much easier to install.
-
Ah ok. Figures. Oh well, she has really been playing a lot of Frogger.
Thanks everyone.
