Title: To offset or not to offset
Post by: n3wt0n on December 30, 2014, 02:34:57 pm
Me again,

I am on the verge of placing my order through GGG for some cab supplies and I have measured my CP for 3/4" molding but this raises a question...

When constructing the control panel should I use 5/8 MDF + 1/8 plexi and offset the slot so the trim covers the edge of the plexi and the MDF? Or, do I construct the control panel with 3/4" MDF+ plexi and center the slot on the MDF so that it just covers the MDF edge? I know this is likely personal opinion but I don't think I have seen both options. If you could help out and give example pics or just mention projects I can find that did one or the other that would be great.

I haven't made a decision one way or the other yet so please share your opinions!

Thanks.

Metal control panel. No plexi. No Tmolded front edge. No offset.

While I agree with Brother Neph on the metal panel, if that's not possible, do the 5/8 - 1/8 offset idea if it's feasible. Your wrists will thank you.

Thanks for the quick answers guys. I won't be going with the metal control panel on this one so I will put one checkmark in the offset column and a checkmark in the newly added "don't do it" category.

More opinions welcome!   :D

Search "ZD Invader" on the forum. You'll see some offset tmolding. I'd link it, but I'm on my phone...

Thanks Nephasth,

I took a look and it looks like it turned out really well. Is it just the way the image looks or was the plexi  just a touch above the molding? Were you happy with it? For anyone else who wants to see here is the link...

First time (and so far only time) I've used a slot bit on the router. I'm happy with the results, but my favorite medium is metal.
