Title: Bar top moon patrol replica
Post by: Fast351 on December 29, 2014, 03:15:07 pm
So I just finished a vertical full size arcade machine, and want to start on something that I'm going to build from scratch.  I want to be able to play horizontal games on it, but want to to "look" classic.

So I took the top half of a Moon Patrol cabinet, scaled it, and made it a bartop.  Right now it's 4/5 scale, which allows me to use a 17" LCD monitor behind a scaled bezel.

Things I'm contemplating...

1) Is this too big for a bartop machine?  If I shrink it more, I either lose the bezel (and I want it to look pretty authentic) or move to a 15" monitor.

2) What controls?  If I go with a standard 8 way stick, and 2 buttons wired in parallel like the original CPO, it would look the most authentic and still give me a bunch of classic games I can play.  I don't really play much head to head multiplayer, so that would be OK.

Thoughts?

Kinda on the big side for a bartop IMO. But you need that real estate to print all that cool Moon Patrol artwork!

Yeah, at those dimensions, you should probably just go whole hog and do the whole cabinet. Scaling it down only 20% is still kind of big for a bartop.

The other option is the 15" monitor.  That puts it at 3/4 scale.   17" wide CP, 21 deep, 26 tall.

What is the "big" dimension you guys are most concerned with?  Is it the depth?  (I see most of the bartops are shallow but tall and wide).  I can probably knock a couple inches off the back and maintain enough side to keep the side graphics intact.

Slow day at work.  Vector graphics on side, better rendering...

An actual Moon Patrol cabinet is 23" wide. At 19" you are so close, you may as well stick with the original measurements to keep the artwork a bit easier. You could buy an actual MP CPO and just install it. Same goes for the bezel. An actual MP cabinet is 25.5" deep. It's almost like a Moon Patrol "muffin top", with no bottom of the cabinet! lol

I've decided to move forward with this project!

I am going to be tracking this entire project through its paces with pictures.  I will also share the AutoCAD drawings and BOM if anyone is interested.  It has been fun so far trying to get all the parts together.

Here is a full size plot laid against my Williams Sinistar cabinet (almost identical to a Moon Patrol).
