i was thinking about having different colored joysticks on my 4 player cab, and i know that the T-sticks from ultimarc i think are different colors, but are those any good? so basically im just asking if the joysticks that are different colors are as good as the super 8's?
-
happs comps are as good as supers(imo).
they got red,blue,yellow,green.
-
so do you think the colored joysticks with same colored buttons looks best, or should i go with the black joysticks and multicolored buttons? i know its a matter of personal pref. but i wanted to know others opinion.

Less is more, the less colors you use on your panel, the better it will look. I cringed when selecting buttons/controls for the latest Mame cabinet someone ordered from me, since they requested that each button be a different color.

hmm....so are you recommending like black joysticks, and for each player, the same color scheme for each player, like all red for player 1, all blue for player 2, etc. or are you saying make players 1-4 red, etc.?

My main suggestion is to not mix button colors in individual button banks. But I would personally use the same color buttons for ALL the buttons. If you do go with a different color for each station, then try to match the joysticks (like many 4-player games did), of course that leaves you with balltop joysticks again, since those are the only ones that seem to be available in a zillion colors.

well i can get the competition joysticks, and they have different colors. so i could use the different colors for each station...hmmm....decisions decisions. http://www.slikstik.com/piclg/ejlg2.jpg heres a pic of the slikstik that has different colors. that looks pretty good, so i guess different colors at each station would look cool. but now i guess i cant have cp art, cuz that will be too much color right?
on an off note....paigeoliver, ive noticed something, you are very responsive early in the morning. could it be that you are sitting at your computer right before you have to go to work? cuz thats what i do, get ready, then browse before work ;D

On my 2 player cab I had a blue and red combination of joysticks and buttons -- it was a oconversion and this was the color scheme it had. I wouldn't have imagined doing mulitple color joysticks, but the 2 color schemes really did seperate 1 player and 2 player.
My Sega sit-at cab also has 2 different colored joystick knobs, but due to their colors I'm looking for replacements. Neon pink and neon lime green are just not "arcade colors" in my opinion.

hulkster,
I've got black supers with multi-colored buttons; two banks of six. I think it looks pretty good.
I know you asked about joystick colors, but I'd just mention that its easier, IMO, to explain to people which buttons do what if they are different colors. Especially if you have kids.

I actually like it this way... it's so much easier when my daughter plays a game and asks which button does something, and I can say "The blue button"....
I have 4 buttons per player and use the Neo-Geo color scheme, except I replaced yellow with purple because the yellow really looked out of place on the panel... (I do use a yellow Pause button, though)
I know monochromatic panels are "in" these days, but I always remembered arcade cabinets as riots of color....

yes as of right now i have multicolored buttons on my 2 player cab, and its easier to say the "red button" when people ask what does what, but see, im going to have 4 players and i think it would look better if i had the same color buttons to go with the joysticks. opinions on this?
-
As far as "what button to push", you could just do button lables... (Like on the pic above...
That way when they ask, just say button "A"...
-
yeah, that brings me to my next point.....cp art. i was thinking about doing cp art with the labels and stuff in the art itself, but i didnt know if too many colors were getting in the way, you know what im saying?
-
if you are putting artwork then I say go all black.Nothing looks better then black on artwork 8)
You saw madk's 4p panel right?
That will definetly convince you to go all black.

wheres his pics? i did a search, but his pics are down or something. can you show me the pics.

I am really responsive in the eraly mornings because I am at work on the computer. Pretty much the only time I ever post on BYOAC is between 11 PM and 6 AM. Notice how I am pretty much totally absent on weekends? That is because I don't even have net access at home and only post from work (although sometimes I go to the library and check up on things, and may bust out a quick post there).
-
ah, i see. well thanks for your prompt posts:-) i post in the mornings before work, and then of course when i get home around 5. just in case you were dying to know!

Depends on who's playing your cab and what you intend to do with it. Do you want a certain look? My cabs are played by other people mostly so for me its easiest to say push the red button to fire.
If I did this panel again I'd do red prodigy sticks from http://groovygamegear.com. The prodigys and omnisticks from there come in multiple colors.

Heres another panel of mine-

wow that looks really good. the only problem i have, is getting cp art. i guess somebody on the board would do some for me, for free or for a price. once i build my cp, ill be asking questions. i did see one guys cp i think it was Dr. J's Arcade or something, and his cp is bad ass. and he used different colored buttons in the shades of blue and stuff. it looked really good. what do you guys think?

Ok, I am slightly changing my mind about different colored buttons. I just finished up the control panel for "The Return of the Neldog" (Neo Geo layout, christmas gift for someone), and I used 4 different color buttons (A,B,C,D each a different color), along with purple start buttons (a 5th color), and black joysticks (a 6th color), on a sort of glossy rubber overlay and it looks awesome, kind of like someone spilled a bag of skittles.
I'll photograph it today and then post it when I come back to work.
