I have castle crashers playing pretty well in one player. Now I need a work arounds to make castle crashers work with 4players with my I pack.
Has anyone been able to do this? It's a long shot I know.

Why is this a long shot? If you can configure the keyboard controls in the game, it should be possible.
-
Unless I am missing something, You can only do keyboard config for player one.
-
More specifically, players 2 - 4 only respond to X-Input gamepads (like xbox 360). (not DirectX).

Yep, This is the problem.

I did not know that. Maybe with joy2key you could map the joysticks to keys.

That's an interesting oversight given that Behemoth built a Castle Crashers cab for 2010 PAX.
I tried to find a complete build log detailing, at least, what I/O they used but could not. Perhaps a hacked 360 controller?

That or 4 of those expensive encoders at focus attack that show up as an xbox 306/PS3.

We will have a plug-in Xinput adaptor for the I-PAC 2 around end-Jan

Forgot about those. Seeing as how I'm not really one to hack up and install consoles into cabinets.
But I digress, that's still an interesting oversight.

The x360kb files from the Super Street Fighter IV thread stickied in the software forum work fine for two players.
I used it on my cab for a while with Castle Crashers before I switched to hacked xbox360 pads.
(and I'm unable to play it with the hacked xbox360 pads because the ONE button I don't have wired up is required to play the game)
I assume it would work just as well for 4 as long as you don't have any duplicate keys used.
Just add 2 more pads to the config file.
Here is the layout they used on the machine they built for shows:

Notice the combinations it shows. Someone mentioned in another thread that you could also cycle items with the start button.
Using the workaround is actually superior to using hacked xbox360 pads.
The game doesn't allow you to change the button mapping if using real xbox360 pads.
With the x360kb config file, you can swap the buttons around however you want.

Thanks Bad mouth,
I will give it a try.

They used a Playstation 3, and hacked up gamepads to hardwire them into the arcade controls.

That's very interesting news Andy! Is it going to be a toggle type system, where you can switch between xinput mode and keyboard inputs?

THIS. I used the x360kb.ini hack as well and it worked great! (I had a 4 player setup with and ipac4). Simply edit the x360kb.ini file and drop the .dll and .ini file in the same directory that Castle Crashers is in.
