Title: First conversion project: jamma to xbox coinops, need help
Post by: Dutsk on December 17, 2014, 03:58:52 pm
Hey guys

My plan is to convert my old SKINS golf game to a xbox mame machine.
I'm having trouble trying to find out what I need to make this project happen. ...

My cabinet has a CRT monitor - I will need some sort of xbox to CRT converter
I will also need a speaker input from my stock arcade speakers to xbox
My thoughts on the control panel were two KADEs with a USB to xbox cord
(I'm thinking six buttons each player) 2players

My question is am I in the right direction?  And will I need any other hardware to make this cabinet happen?

Thanks in advance

If you're interested in an easy solution for connecting an Xbox to a JAMMA cabinet, the Ultimarc products are as good as it gets.
JPAC (http://www.ultimarc.com/jpac.html)
XBox A/V to J-Pac Adapter (http://www.ultimarc.com/xba.html)
XBox Controllers to J-Pac Adapter (http://www.ultimarc.com/xba.html)

Very quick to install, doesn't require much configuring, and you don't need to hack up the JAMMA harness and completely re-wire the controls & A/V.

I'm actually selling this set altogether, and sent you a PM to see if you're interested.

The two kades is the way to go.

I thought so too for the control panel.

But what do I need for CRT to xbox?

See what Opt2not is willing to part with the ultimarc turnkey solution for.  The ultimarc is likely super solid but spendy new.
I had an iPac and converter and xbox converter and was never able to get it mapped well for coinops.  Opt2not, have you tried it with coinops?

I have bought a few dynamo cabs and sold the arcade CRTs to KLOV collector guys.  I put in flat glass de-cased TV's with component video in and add 2.1 computer speakers (stereo + sub).  This lets the collectors keep arcade things going and gives you the best output for the xbox with that CRT awesomeness.  You also get rid of arcade power supplies.  It also makes the console emulation more authentic.  I have a 27" horizontal and 25" vertical/tate and I am super happy with my setup.  They both boot by default to coinops/xbox.  The only reason I would personally go the jamma route would be if I planned on swapping out for Jamma boards, then it would make sense.

Yup, worked great with coinops using the jpac. I didn't have much I needed to configure, and the cd that comes with it had all the configuration software I needed to do any specific mappings.

Though I think the OP is looking for some kind of solution involving KADE since he hasn't bothered to return my PM.

Does anyone know what I need to hook up a gutted xbox controller to a control panel? Ie : an ipac or Whatnot

Also, can I use an analog joystick with this setup?

If you're referring to using a hacked gamepad, the hacked gamepad is the encoder -- no need for an IPac or KADE.

If the hacked gamepad has analog controls, you should be able to use it with a compatible analog joystick AFAIK.

If the gamepad connects to 2 tabs of each potentiometer, they are wired as variable resistors -- you must get an analog joystick that matches the resistance value range of the original.

If the gamepad connects to 3 tabs of each potentiometer, they are wired as voltage dividers -- the resistance values are not critical as long as the voltage range on the center tab of the potentiometer is similar to the range of the original.

Just to be sure, please post the details about the controller you plan on hacking and the controls you want to connect to it.   ;D

I am interested in this set if you still have it. It will work connecting to an LCD monitor in the cabinet right? I have an LCD monitor set-up and a jamma harness in my arcade, and want to hook up my xbox with mame.

thanks
