Title: Nintendo Style Cabs?
Post by: kegga on December 16, 2014, 08:07:48 pm
Looking at ChanceKJ's DK thread made me wonder if there is a list of all the games that used the DK/Nintendo style cabinet somewhere? My google foo has not turned up one. :dunno Someday I wouldn't mind building a Nintendo style cab that played all the possible games.

There was some red submarine game that didn't  do well, and popeye.  The reason that doesn't really shake is the difference between horizontal and vertical games.

That doesn't mean you couldn't do it though.

Several related posts/threads.

I'm doing a little research and I'm trying to figure out what colours all the classic Nintendo cabs were. I was wondering if there were any that I missed? Both actual production ones, and popular non-production ones like DIIK (DK2).

-Radar Scope - Red
-DK - Red or blue
-DK jr - orange
-DK 3 - Red
-Popey - Blue
-Mario Bro. - Blue or Orange

-FixIt Felix - Light blue

Fan Built
-DK 2 - Dark Blue
-DK Pauline - Pink/White

While I don't pretend to be an expert, I thought I'd try to sum up what I know in my limited experience with these cabs. Most I verified with scans of the original flyers (probably the most official source on the 'net). I've only included single-monitor cabs.

Radar Scope - Red
Donkey Kong - Typically Blue. The trivia for Radar Scope on KLOV states that out of the 3000 made, 2000 of them were converted to DK (at the factory).
Popeye - Blue (although I'm sure I've seen some in orange).
Donkey Kong Junior - Orange
DK3 and Mario Bros kits - sold as conversion kits for the previous games. Could be any color
Mario Bros Dedicated - Orange widebody cabinet
Vs Unisystem Dedicated- Grey cabinet, modified design from the previous cabs (no speaker grille on front, different coin door)
Vs Unisystem Conversion - conversion kits for DK, DK jr, and Popeye.
Playchoice-10 kit - Converts vs. unisystem to PC-10. The flyer shows the cabinet in black, though.
R-type - Appears to be the same cab as Unisystem dedicated but in black.

DK3 Nintendo-Pak flyer:

CORRECT URL: http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=flyer&id=3142&image=1 (http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=flyer&id=3142&image=1)

Unisystem Flyer:
http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=flyer&id=3148&image=4 (http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=flyer&id=3148&image=4)

When I read rzgrip's post, I assumed that it was a Vs Unisystem kit's box that had the pulled parts from a DK Jr conversion in it. If they didn't apply the new plate that would explain the serial too. DK Junior wasn't available as a kit was it? None of the flyers ever mention a kit for DK, Popeye, or DK junior. This isn't to say that over the years some op didn't swap boards around, though.

I also think there might be some confusion here between the Vs system and the Playchoice-10. The Vs. system had easily swappable roms for the operators to change out games. The Playchoice-10 had 10 seperate games that the player could switch between at any time as each quarter just gave them a pre-set time limit to play.

A member of these forums (Buckethead) built a MAME Donkey Kong style cab.  He chose to paint it "Radar Scope" red which I personally think was an awesome choice.  He has the monitor mounted vertically, to stay true to the Donkey Kong design.  However he threw in a bigger 21" monitor, so he may be running some horizontal games as well.

Thanks for the answers. What about making the cab a little wider than the original an rotating the monitor?

A wider Nintendo? Ugh. They did make a widebody, but I'm not sure it could accommodate rotation.

Theoretically it could be done with a Widebody version, but the monitor would need to be at 19:".  However, the addition of extra buttons would kill the look in my opinion (especially if you are considering fighting games or Neo Geo games).

The Nintendo cabinet is a classic cab IMHO.  So it deserves classic games with fewer buttons.

Ya I think I would just stick with the original cab with only vertical games. My eventual goal would be to have some of the classic cab styles with all or most all of the games played in each rather than a dedicated for each game. For example Nintendo - DK, DK Jr, Popeye and so on. Midway - Galaga, Pac-Man and so on. My thoughts would be 4 to 5 cabs (wife and space have a big say on this ;D) 4 being of the type described above and maybe one custom cab for everything else.

Question if you guys had 4 classic cabs styles to chose from which ones would you choose?

Taito and Midway (Pac/Ms Pac/Galaxian/Galaga)

Atari (Centipede & Dig Dug) too, I suppose.

If using an LCD the rotation could be done without changing the cab if the rotation mechanism was able to tilt the monitor 45o towards z+ along the y axis and then execute the rotation on the X.  Providing you used a bright ass LCD and some dark ass tinted glass it could look flawless.  Mechanism would require a linear actuator and a stepper motor/good servo.

I was actually thinking the same darn concept today. However, with as much work is involved, I would just spend the money on one of those 1:1 monitors coming out next year.

I am pretty sure yot is that 80's guy. I got footage right here of yot on a typical saturday, hanging out in his garage.

Footloose - Dancing Warehouse Scene (1984) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc8crnqKEns#ws)

Now you know how he ended up in the swimming pool from simply putting up christmas lights.

Hmm I would say the timing of this project would be some time later next year so waiting on the 1:1 monitor could be a good option depending on price.

...and this is what I get for searching my username on the forums.

I'd ask for my 5 minutes back, but I'd probably waste them.  ;)
