Title: first cabinet - 2 dumb questions (cabinet 101?)
Post by: spurty on December 16, 2014, 08:48:51 am
Previously had excellent and much needed help in the woodworking forum, now asking for help on the control panel. Sorry!

Trying to get a basic idea of how large my control panel will be and how it will be laid out. Looked through others' pictures and this is closest to my thoughts...

2 questions though..(1) when you choose an input method for a specific rom does it 'lock out' all the other controls? On this panel, when using the 4 way stick you'd be brushing against the trackball, or using the spinner accidentally pressing the player 2 buttons. Would that mess things up? and (2) am i right in thinking 4 way stick games are all old(er)...so 2 fire buttons max would do for that stick, and it could have its own dedicated buttons rather than positioning it to 'share' the 6 player 1 buttons...

Thanks in advance for any help with the above...

Yes, when you are playing a game in MAME, only the controls configured to work will do anything.  The others are ignored.

Unless, for example, you wire the 4 way and player 1's 8 way in parallel then both sticks would be "live". Not an issue if you're playing centipede, but if you're playing street fighter, player 2 could mess you up by hitting the 4 way :)

Also, for that control panel layout, there is no need to add additional buttons for the 4-way.  While in the 4-way game of your choice, simply hit TAB in MAME and "re-map" the buttons to be player 2's button # 1 and button # 2.
