Title: Best free software for cab friendly game design
Post by: capt awesome on December 14, 2014, 09:59:10 am
Im looking for something that doesnt have splash screens etc.  I used klick n play because that is what I made games in a couple decades ago as a kid so i knew how to use it but boy is it glitchy.  Is there anything else out there.  I just want to have a few of my own games on my cab, riddled with inside jokes.

Are you looking for a front end to launch multiple games, or software to make a game? I am so confused.

Was looking for something to more easily make games.  Gamemaker seems popular around here but the free version has splash screens and I dont want to shell out the money for the non nagware version.

GameSalad? http://gamesalad.com/creator (http://gamesalad.com/creator)

There are many options. However, free? That's a tough one. Trial or limited features is more realistic. Google and see what you find. Maybe you will see what you are looking for.

Klik N' Play was THE ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- back in the day. I remember shelling out $200 to buy 2 MB of RAM to improve the performance of the program.

If you're not selling the games you make commercially, I think Unity is free. Might as well go with that.

Rpgmakervxace is the easiest. There are scripts in the community for everything. I made a Mario style side scrolling platformer and a chips challenge type game. And there is a good community for help. Plus I can help if needed.

Oops. It's not free the legal way.

I remember someone posted a link to some pretty good looking game creation software that had a Commando game for the demo. Damned if I can't find the thread, though.

I think you mean the thread I posted.

Arcade Game Studio.
I forgot about it, so I didn't try it out, but it looks pretty cool for making a decent simple arcade game.

I promise to use that program to design a game and freely give it to the community.

I dunno.  I played this video over and over at work, louder each time... I didn't hear it.  All I heard was Cat ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---

Unity is free even if you sell games. The downside of course is the splash screen on boot, a whopping 4 seconds of "powered by Unity." I hate the term "powered by." As if my local radio station is "powered by Subway."

The upside of unity is the enormity of it. Unity now works well with 2d games which is nice. I've made a few games with GameMaker and Unity. I've even made a few non-game programs with Unity. I think the best thing to do is design your game, then go through each free offering and see if it can handle your ideas. The downside is that you need to learn some code to use it.

I'm pretty sure that you are out of luck finding one without a splash screen for free though. That's the only thing they get out of you for using the software for free. Worry about your game first, and then if it's every bit as awesome as you imagined it to be you can always buy the program afterwards to get rid of the advert. Unity has a rental program which I believe is $72/month. The others aren't expensive either for the pc only export.

In the spring I do plan on trying out Rpgmakervxace maker to make a very short playable book trailer for a book about a detective that my friend just had published recently.

The current game I'm making in Unity can be found in my signature.
