Cue the obligatory video . . .Wow... you just can't stop, can you? :applaud:Most of us are compelled by the sickness.
The code name for this build should be 'The Dong Awakens'. >:D
Well that escalated quickly
The code name for this build should be 'The Dong Awakens'. >:DOr maybe "Jamma - lama - dong - ki - kong" :lol
This looks real neat. Somewhere online there is a few levels of DK with SNES artwork.
I dunno, that DK to me with the tie screams "CONSOLE".And sharpen the teeth.
Lose the tie and the "Help" and I think you might be getting somewhere.

Took a quick stab at it. Shoot me an email if this work for you!

Here is my quick draft to show what I was thinking. I took out the help and added the hammer instead to fill in that space.
Don't be afraid of negative space. It helps the eye know what's important and adds visual flow. Filling it with clipart won't help anything.

Yeah, but it is mimicking how it sort of just hangs there in the game. I just thought that it was a good idea to throw something in there as he wanted something in that blank space, and the hammer seemed to be the most logical choice.
Can we talk about the floor? Howzabout making it look like the last platform, instead of grape? Maybe some decking?

The final platform of that level is actually Violet Beauregarde.

Does anyone have a nice clean install example of an ServoStik and an arcadeSD setup?
Yeah, I've seen that. But I want pictures. Wiring diagrams and text instructions are one thing, but if I can get a look at how someone did their setup and layout, I can improve on it.

Your search-fu is weak. :whap
Yeah, I've seen that. But I want pictures. Wiring diagrams and text instructions are one thing, but if I can get a look at how someone did their setup and layout, I can improve on it.I thought this was a Donkey Kong only cab? All you need is a 4-way.
I'm putting Mario Bros and Super Mario bros in it as well. Besides, there's an Arcade SD going in it, I can't not have options. Maybe the day comes that I feel the itch for one of the games needing an 8-way? I'd want to activate it for a bit.
I don't know, just spitballing.

:P want me to just put FFJR in it, paint it light blue, and find myself a 4-way stick? Would that make you happy?
In other news, Rockhart was able to remove the tie from all of my DK artwork assets. So we're back in business with the art package soon. Andrew did some wicked work on them, make sure you check out his page here: www.andrewlockhartdesign.com (http://www.andrewlockhartdesign.com). Seriously wicked stuff. Massive thanks to him!
The name labels look like added on bumper stickers.
Just this man's humble opinion, but ditch the bumper stickers. I know you want to advertise what the cab can do, but first and foremost, this is a showpiece. With the bumper stickers, it just kinda smells like a DK that had a X-in-1 shoved in it. I would probably even get rid of the "Help!", (That might be partially because on my monitor, it looks like she is screaming "Kelp!")
I think art creep can be as tempting as feature creep, but honestly, it looks really good when it is clear and simple. If you want something showier, I would personally try to experimenting with expanding from the main art piece, something like the 2005 combo cabinet, but hopefully in a way where the art styles don't clash as much.

An original 4way DK joystick, the ping of the omron micro-switches and unique profile of original buttons is half of the character of playing the kong games on a Nintendo cab. On my arcadeSD based multikong I ended up disabling mario brothers after a week since it's a much more fun game in the co-op situation with 2 joysticks and I found people starting 2 player games thinking it was an alternating game. Super mario bros. was never even a consideration to me since it was 8way and 2 buttons and wanted to have a true DK panel with nothing extra with all proper parts. Just some things to consider or you can just tell me to suck an egg.
good day.
No, this is a valid point.
With Mario and Super Mario out of the picture that basically leaves me with only 4-way games.
Joystick choice has been bugging me. I was stuck on a ServoStik vs a Dominux8, but now I'm really not sure. I wanted the feel of the leaf switches, but I wanted the automated 4/8 switch of the ArcadeSD board. The joystick choice is entirely subjective. I just need to make up my mind.
I will be adding a second button. I'll need it for another part of the project I'm planning.
:D
Don't you have better things to do today Yots' :P
Now I'm gonna have to go back and read that.
Ok smart guy, if you were building this what stick would you use?
And you know, if you really gotta have more games, maybe you want to think about just focusing on just making the sd card readily swappable and leave the panel as is. There are a lotta cool games you can sneak in with the same panel and monitor orientation. You got Dig Dug, you got Galaga, you got Satan's Hollow, you got Pacman, Mr. Do, etc....Extending the SD slot with only one control panel doesn't apply to what we're selling. Which is why we're talking about 2 panels for each SD card with a 9 or 12 pin molex connector.
Now I'm gonna have to go back and read that.

I'll throw this out here once. Like chopper said, you can consider it or tell me to pound sand. It's just my opinion.
You told me your idea for Ultimate DK being a cab that could play DK, DKII, DK Jr, DK3 and DK: PE all in one. I though, that's cool - all those games use the same controls, the same control scheme, same amount of buttons, same monitor orientation - that's a great idea. It's unique, and in a world of "Let's emulate everything under the sun!", it stand out. Yes, it's **only** 5 games, but it's 5 games with a shared history. Even Nintendo hasn't released anything like that. To me, that's a A+ Project, something that is attention-worthy.

Otherwise, see if you can color match to King Friday's cloak. That will ensure a regal shade.

Yes, but they are coming from the far left, think about how much force it would take to roll them uphill with enough speed to knock a grown man down. And to do that rapidly multiple times.
Technically he pounds ground in game whether there is a barrel in front of him or not......
Make the fire 40% smaller. Have the barrels rolling over the horizon (foreground to background) towards JM rather than coming from behind the horizon (background to foreground) and adjust the scale accordionly. Most people don't notice when you end a sentence with an instrument. Sharpen DK's teeth.

If he's pounding the empty ground that vehemently with that expression on his face, he's got other issues...
The monitor repair will only cost me $35 plus $20 parts (Canadian). I got a hell of a deal as a friend of a friend is doing it for me. There are almost a couple dozen components he wanted to replace. I said anything to try and save it. Might also have a line on a new frame so I can replace the bent up one.
Dude, do you want feedback or not?
Haha, that's not what I was getting at. :D
Well why don't you just go kick rocks then?
Who says, "Go pound salt"? That's just cray right there yo.
:lol :dunno They both sound weird to me.

Oh, one thing i did learn from this: Those GroovyGameGear CLASSX buttons with leafs, and GGG Leaf stick are AWESOME for playing DK, needs a 4-way restrictor, but whatever... I can't wait for my actual DK stick to get here.

You all are about as funny as a screen door on a battle ship.
:dunno Huh?
I got the idea from you in the first place last year when I started my Flynn build. :applaud: I was thinking a few days ago to build a wood one, but then was like... Meh.
Not really an update per say, but kinda.
I built a breakout CP for my new cocktail, and put my ArcadeSD board in. This way i can get a little play testing of the ArcadeSD I'm using for this build ;) Nothing special, just tapped into the P1 CP and made a breakout harness. Love these Molex connectors....

Hey Neph, Is this better? $6.00 at a local craft shop. And thats after a 40% off coupon. Gonna add a layer of plexi to the top and use it to house my DK controls to use on my cocktail until the DKU CP is built.

Oh, If anyone has a cheap and decent source for all those bolts holding the parts onto the panels i'd love to hear about it!
Good call!
A couple of them are corroded quite bad. But I should be able to use this method to save as many as I need. I was thinking of cleaning a few with CLR.
How fine are we talking?
I take it these arnt plated?

Placing them in a drill (in place of the bit) and using a fine grit sand paper on them as they spin in the drill can remove most of the pitting if there is any on the tops and give you a nice shine to the tops.
I'm looking for the matching plunger for that yellow Nintendo "Red Tent" button you can see in the above picture. That, or a full yellow button in decent/salvageable shape. If you happen to have one you're willing to part with, please let me know. ;D
I need to track down a DK3 metal CP as well. but that should be a bit more easy to find. I already know where there is one, just getting the guy to sell it and ship it. :D
The thing is in amazing shape.
Here's a thought. JAMMA this and delicate it to the ArcadeSD as planned, with the WG monitor (when i get it fixed...). Then use all the Nintendo electronic guts and Sanyo Monitor for that dedicated Mario Bros wide body "Tully Style" Cabaret i want to build next.
:D
Have you considered KLOV? They like your brand of crazy.
Where did you end up finding the elusive yellow button?

Thanks guys!Have you ohmed the coil in your coin cointer? Have you tried connecting 12V to it?
Ran into a little snag today. Looks like I'm not going to be able to use the stock coin counter as its voltage doesn't match the output on the ArcadeSD. Options are to replace the coil in the stock counter, or use a whole replacement counter. I'll add one to the shopping list I guess. :D

Wouldn't a relay require me to have a 24v source from a power supply anyways? The one I'm looking at has 12/5v outputs only.Yes, it would require a 24v supply or power converter.

I know its a little late but I think you could have just used a NPN resister. It would have run less then $1. Not 100% sure it would have worked out here. I only know about them from the instructions from when I built a 1watt CNC laser.Well, no. He still would've needed +24V which he don't have. I know what you mean though, and yes, it would have worked IF he had +24V. Btw: it's called an NPN TRANSISTOR. And the transistor require a resistor for the signal into the BASE of it.
It would have look something like this, ground from your regulated power supply to pin one, +5 from your counter to pin two, and +12 from you power supply. You might have had to add a resister to pin two but that is simple. The way I under stand it, it works like a gate that opens when there is a small positive current applied to pin 2 and the higher voltage circuit is aloud to close.
Just thought I would share in case some one has similar issues. I know this build will inspire others. This is coming along great.
After a prince....
I don't get it? ???

ok, does anyone have experience with removing the old crusty sticky pads from these wire retainers?
Soak the pad in Goof-Off or Goo Be Gone.ok, does anyone have experience with removing the old crusty sticky pads from these wire retainers?
It's hardended. Will that even have an effect?
This is looking really cool. Got my colleagues to gather around my cubicle. Thanks, but what do you mean??
AJ
8 pages?! Ain't this done yet? Sheeesh.I hope it never gets finished! :lol
Might have a line on one...
Also, i've picked up another yard of marine quality vinyl and this weekend i'll be redoing the seat on a new stool to match the Encom one i did for FLYNN's. I'm thinking a big red Nintendo logo? I was gonna do the DKU logo, but i put "Encom" on my other one, so i figure i'd stay with the developer. Maybe a dark Purple nintendo logo?

I see you are using Nintendo joysticks. We should have a long discussion about their pros/cons and if it's possible to break one. :D
Oh, and :censored: -ing castors are IMPOSSIBLE to find replacements for. Nothing at Princess Auto, Rona, Lowes, or Home Depot. You mean these:
Would you believe that there are no less then two specialty shops in this city for castors. a "Casterland" and a place called "Castor Town". I'm gonna check them both out tomorrow and see if they have a set of 2.5" ones to replace these where i can avoid drilling new holes.
2.5" seem to be a match. the mounting bracket has an approximate hole pattern of 28mmx55mm on centre. The wheels on these read "65x25" on the sides.I must say: I've seen these in a local store. I'm 99% sure of that. Let me know if you don't find them. It takes just a week sending a couple over the pond.
I'm gonna take one into the store tomorrow and try to find a match, I found IDENTICAL ones on Amazon.com from Hong Kong under the name "2.5" White Single Wheel Flat Plate Light Duty Nylon Rigid Caster (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00842JR6O?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A1THAZDOWP300U)" but they won't be here until the end of June. Thats my second option if i can't find them in town. I don't really want to wait that long for them.
Thanks! I'm using 2x3's and a 102' roll of medium weight plastic. Its roughly 8' cubed.
:dunno oh well, would have probably paid more from some guy on KLOV, and 15 days is a lot better then 30.
Seriously? Who shows off pictures of the cab being masked. No one does that. ;D
This is true.
I like be detailed so anyone who wants to use my methods can follow or adapt.
Nothing too major happened over the following weekend. I proceeded onto paint. If I could avoid paint I would. But it's one of those necessary evils. If I do a cocktail for my next cab I plan on buying the pre finished shelving. It's like buying particle board with the laminate already pre applied. Should save me some time.
I just used regular painters tape to mask off the different areas.

On both sides of the inside of the cabinet I used a flat black.
In between letting the layers of paint dry I was able to install the hardware for the control panel. This included the CP latches, strike plates, and retainer. These, as of now, are all in stock at Mikes Arcade. (http://mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?action=search&category=Game+Parts&subcategory=Nintendo+Parts)

After my flat black had dried I taped the areas for the next coat. I thought I could get away with a semi gloss but it just didn't give that pop that the gloss had. I also apologize if some of my pictures are a little blurred. I forgot to use the anti shake feature on my camera so some of them are a little blurred but you get the idea.

I painted the outer sides and bezel retainer with the gloss black. I thought about going with vinyl on the bezel retainer but I liked how this paint soaks into the wood I got. It goes in enough just to show the actual wood grain. I'll try to get a good picture of the results if I can. I also painted the top of the cab in flat black. Nobody will ever really see up there so I didn't waste the gloss paint.
Great build so far ChanceKJ! I really love the Nintendo Cabs and yours is spot on. Sorry if you already saw this as I posted it for user Wyo a few days back but I thought you might be interested in this for your Ultimate DK cab:
I even have the artwork files if you want them. Just let me know and I'll send them your way. I made it fully editable in Photoshop with layers.

Thanks!I have every faith in you that you will do it.
Funny you mention that. My buddy reloads his own ammo and I was asking him if I could use it for a few days. I was originally gonna use it for the bolts, but that other night I got bored and just took a few grades of wet/dry sandpaper to them. I'm pretty much done cleaning all the hardware now, and he lives an hour and a half round trip. Might not be worth it. Still debating
:applaud:
Great looking harness man!
Clean wiring really pops my taco. >:D :cheers:We don't need to know your kinks, bro.

Five days in the tumbler,
Right?!
I figure if i change up the media type and run it for another week i can get a mirror finish on them. But seriously, nobody wants that.
Besides, the longer i run this tumbler the higher risk I'm at of being attacked by Graboids.
For now, here's something that came in the mail the other day from This Old Game.

Well at least a link to the tumbler so that I can do it myself. Lol.
Is that your hand Paul?
If you hold your hand in that position too long, it will freeze that way.

Yes.

Its no longer tom cruse crazy.
Cutting the plastic piece and rotating them. Genius. Most people would have either cut the wires or re-crimped a new connector. :applaud:
Looks great!

I'm personally surprised in myself that I didn't try to source a new set of compatible connectors. :dizzy:It's only 10:49 A.M.

I NEED to replace the pots on the back by the audio board. I'm debating getting the remote kit from twisty wrist or just the pots themself. If I do just the pots I'll see if Ian Kellogg can source me a set.
Great suggestion. I need a wire stripper. My ratcheting crimper sux though. Any suggestions on those?
D
Nope,
Thats die cut side art, as is the bezel. :)
Thats it for now, the rest of the art package should be along later this week. I'll be able to wrap this up before the new year. :)This thread is in fact over a year old now. But it's been a nice ride, and I've learned a lot from this. This is the thread I'm going to whenever something is unclear for me. (I just go directly to page 8 or 9 and start from there)
I forgot to ask earlier... Do you have any pics with the .vs panel mounted? If he does, I hope he doesn't post them. It would ruin the illusion. Use the spoiler tag if you do, Chancester.

I am seriously considering an ArcadeSD
I have never seen this DK project on here. Really neat outcome. That's the best custom I've seen in the DK theme
PS- Clay stopped developing for ArcadeSD, he had a falling out with the programmer and the project went dormant. He did get Pauline DK and DKII on the pcb.
If you want a full spread of DK games (minus dk remix) you will do just as well with a rpi and the arcadeSD attract mode theme. Much less money, too.
