Title: Caster/roller question
Post by: djvj on November 24, 2014, 08:58:47 pm
I'm building a 4P pedestal style cab and it will be in a room with brand new hardwood floors. It will normally be pushed up against the wall and pulled out and locked in place when used.

I've been searching around for the perfect solution to move it around without any risk to the floor:

1. No Scratching
2. No Smudging
3. No Indenting
4. Must lock

Does any one have any experience in this department and offer any guidance to a product ideal for this scenario? I'd prefer something not too gaudy either, but most important is the above.

For my build, I used counter sunk lag bolts to connect hockey pucks to the base of the cabinet and then put adhesive felt pads on the bottom of the pucks. It slides nicely and doesn't scratch, but the weight of it keeps it in place when playing.

For my piano, I use furniture sliders which are smooth plastic discs with a cup in the top where the wheels fit.

In most hardware stores you can get casters of varying sizes with a grey, non-marking rubber. It is softer for exactly your purpose.

Any type of casters that look like roller blade wheels would work.

Maybe consider adjustable leveling feet with felt pads on bottom.  Should keep it square and slide nicely.

Thanks for the suggestions. I talked to a vendor who told me about a couple casters he suggests. He actually has a 2" caster that has rotational and wheel locks, also safe for hardwoods for about $11 each. Because of the small size I will most likely go with that.

That hockey PUC idea is great.
I keep the furniture in my bedroom permanently on furniture sliders because I have laminet flooring.

I use these levelers with rubber casters and wheels. If the cab is standing it is very secure and stable but when tilting it on its wheels it's very easy to move it around...

I have the same setup with wheels in the back and levelers in the front.
Especially with a pedestal, it should then be easy to just lift the front and wheel it out of the way.

You can get non marring locking wheels and non marring levelers.
The non marring ones are typically off white in color as opposed to black.

That looks like a good setup.

I went with 4 swivel casters and it is really easy to move the cabinet around....too easy.  On some games the cabinet doesn't roll but it does rock/sway a little bit even on a carpet.  So I would recommend against doing what I did.
