Title: Share Your Categories!
Post by: keilmillerjr on November 24, 2014, 06:37:57 pm
I am using the attract-mode front end and can use filters with rules to create my own categories. So far I have the following:

All
Favorites
SNK (manufactorer)
Cave (manufactorer)

What are you guys using for categories? Any other manufacturers? Specific categories? Favorites? Share what you are using!

Personally, I don't use categories. I have one big wheel with everything. A lot of games, yes, but I don't have to explain how to find anything.

Great ideas! I know some people refer to games as schmups. I have no idea what that is.

Shmups is a contraction of "Shoot them ups".  Things like R-Type, Raiden, Aero Fighters, etc.

Would that be considered anything that contains "Shooter" in catver.ini?

I have namco, capcom, taito, classics, neo geo and all.  I also have buttons that skip up and down letters, and another set that switch between my game lists.

Right now it's broken up by platform:

-Arcade MAME
-Arcade Atomiswave
-Arcade NAOMI
-Arcade PC (Taito Type X and other arcade style PC games)
-Atari 2600
-Atari 7800
-Atari Jaguar
-NEC TurboGrafx  16
-NEC TurboGrafx CD
-Nintendo Entertainment System
-Super Nintendo Entertainment System
-Sega SG-1000
-Sega Master System
-Sega Genesis
-Sega CD
-Sega 32X
-Sega Saturn
-SNK Neo Geo AES
-SNK Neo Geo CD

-------------------

Right now this is just a setup of convenience since each category maps directly to a specific emulator
I think What I'm going to do is leave the console platforms as they are and then change the arcade to be by genre:

Arcade Adventure
Arcade Beat 'em Ups
Arcade Fighting
Arcade Platformer
Arcade Puzzle
Arcade Shooters
Arcade Sports

This will require a lot more work but I think it will be worth it in the end.

My last build revolved around categories.  It has dedicated buttons to navigate them.
I've found that if I'm in the mood for a particular genre, I'm more likely to try something new if they're divided into categories.
If I have to browse through a list of 2,000 games to find something in the genre I want to play, I'm probably just going to search for something I already know.
This machine is all arcade games, no consoles.  I do have a separate menu for PC games and Steam.

The Beat 'em Up genre includes Hack 'n Slash games as they are basically Beat 'em Ups with swords.
New School is mostly Taito Type X and Naomi games.  There are a couple MAME games in there.

I'll eventually get around to posting my gamelists.

I have several genre categories:

Fighter
Beat Em Up
Driving
Flying
Puzzle
XXX
Sports
Shmups
Shooter
Platform
Favourites

Then a few series specific:
Mortal Kombat
Street Fighter
King of Fighters
etc etc

and then a few control specific type ones:

Trackball
Lightgun

I generally tell people to start in the favourites, it is a combination of mine and my wife's favs.
