All,
I could only find one topic related to this from a couple of years ago so I wanted to see if anyone had any updates on running MAME with a Chromebox since they can be had for about $150 now. Specifically, I am inquiring more about dumping the OS and moving to LINUX or OPENELEC. I know OPENELEC runs XBMC great with no issues on these machines. I understand that newer games might not work at full speed but that's fine as I am more a classics guy given my age. I really appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Scott

They say you can, but I'm wondering if it would be better to just go the mini itx route.?

Hopefully it's not ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- like my Sony Google TV. Used it once, worthless without an os update. Waited maybe a year for the update? Then maybe the third time I used it the unit died and only display a black screen. It was so bad, Google was deleting all negative comments on their blog.
Fast forward to September when I bought a chromebook online straight from azus for my girlfriends birthday. It arrived with a dead pixel. Their customer service is so horrible. I couldn't get them on the phone, and got prewritten email replies that didn't really pertain to what I wrote. I finally sent a nasty email asking for a real ---smurfing--- person to call me. Some one called me. They wouldn't exchange the item, but offered to refund me only after receiving and looking at the product. I chewed her ass out saying it was a ---smurfing--- birthday gift and I need an immediate refund or another product for a gift. They refunded me my money that night.
I'm done with Google branded products.

I have an i3 Asus chromebook I made dual boot chrome/ ubuntu and it plays steam games like Fez and Super Meat Boy pretty well. I still use it 95% of the time in the chrome OS because it is a great little browsing system, the gaming is more of a traveling thing. If you want to use linux, I'd consider officially supported hardware instead of having to work around chrome. I'm screwing around with a raspi B+ for some KADE testing and I'm taking a close look at this openelec derivative: http://www.lakka.tv/get/ (http://www.lakka.tv/get/) There are x86 and arm builds for stronger than pi hardware too.
What is the most modern "classic" you hope to run?
