Hi Dewey,

First check the tone arm wiring from cartridge to valve base socket (on the side of the mechanism) for continuity and no shorts, the wires are very fine on the back of this socket and can come adrift.

Check the plug that goes into this socket and the phono connections that go into the amplifier.

The original amplifier would have been the 64 watt amplifier 601-02179 or the European R-2179A version.
Dependant on the pre-amplifier fitted will dictate what volume control is fitted a two wire 10k log or dual 10k log 5 wire control with a screened cable.

If the noise goes away when when the arm is lifted from the record check out the stylus and the tracking weight for any issues.

Regards
Alan
