From Wikipedia:

The objective of Journey is to reunite the members of the band with their instruments (and singer Steve Perry with his microphone). Each instrument is located on a different planet, and the musician must first reach the instrument, then make it back to the band's ship without running into an obstacle. Each musician's stage presents a different challenge.

Once all of the instruments have been collected, the band performs a concert while the player controls Herbie, a bouncer whose job is to prevent fans from rushing the stage. Once a fan sneaks past the bouncer, the crowd steals the band's instruments, and the player must reacquire the instruments again in harder versions of the previous planet challenges. The game continues in this fashion until the player has lost all of his or her lives.

Journey features digitized photographs of each band member's head (placed on a cartoon body), as well as a looping excerpt from the band's hit song "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)", played by a cassette player inside the cabinet.

General Rules:
- One Credit, No Continues.
- Highest score wins.
- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.
- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.
- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!
- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.
- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).
- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.
- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Ha, I used to put quarters into this at Crystal Palace in the Brookgate Shopping Center.   It says 8-way up above but I'm pretty sure this is a 4-way game.

Let's get the party started -

This game was on my possible competition list.   At this moment I can't imagine why?    :badmood:

Nice score Popsicle.

Game definitely uses an 8-way. You can tell in the planet selection stage.

But during each mini-game, 8-way seems to be disabled or at least generally ineffective. Weird.

44,975 after a few games.

I'm only getting 4-way movement, even on the planet selection stage.

Odd--I seem to have noticed inconsistent 4-way/8-way action with the rocket pack guitar guy.

Definitely diagonals on the selection screen. Definitely.

Had a good one 154,000 - milked each board for points and got to the 4th wave.  I am always scared of the bass guitar board.  One badly timed jump...

In order of easiest to hardest (for me, anyway)
1. guitar (jetpack)
2. piano
3. microphone
4. drums
5. bass guitar

If you get all blue drums before reds, you get a 1,000 bonus.  I haven't found a bonus on any other board.  I like to hover and shoot left and right targets just below the finish line on the jetpack board until the 'fuel low' warning comes up.  There are parts when you can sit and shoot those chains things with your drums for a while until they get faster, then it's time to cross the finish line.

On the concert stage, use your bouncer to keep out fans.  The collision detection is generous, so you can only be partially blocking the door and still get 'em (stay towards the middle of the screen as much as possible).

Glad to see you made it to the competition John!  Great way to celebrate your awesome restoration!

I'm going to fire up MAME on my arcade this weekend and see if I can top some scores.  :-)

That is an AWESOME cab blkdog7!

At first I was getting low 30's after 1 round, then 35 and now 40k for first round.   I can routinely get to the third round but can't get past it.   I think the piano round is the most lucrative, I usually get about 7500 for it.     I shoot about half way up one side, then shoot a few the other direction while waiting for the ones above me to cross, then move up and take a few more out before finishing.

If you run 'backwards' on the first part of the piano wave you can jump a few more hurdles for extra 100 pts. a pop, but this gets dangerous on level 3 and on because more than one hurdle can move at different speeds and trip you up.

Bet you guys thought I picked it 'cause I was good at it.  Nope, just thought it'd fit well into the competition.  I occasionally play it casually, just for fun and never thought about any scoring strategies.  Matter of fact, I had never gotten to the 'bouncer' before.  Kinda neat.

Anyway, best so far is 64,000+.  Forget the exact score, but can update post with photo later.

I've updated the standings as well.  Not much movement, just some individual improvements.

You know, Journey's right there in the "meh" category for me, but it is amazing how one stupid Family Guy sketch means that everyone only remembers that one song they did.

I didn't grow up a Journey fan, but their music is pretty ---smurfing--- awesome to me now.

I feel the same.   Journey has some epic songs.

I cant watch family guy... partually due to the characters having privates on their faces.  Partly because its idioic, childish and negative.   Theres far more worthwhile things to waste my time on... like cat videos...  =P

When I was a kid, I loved this game.  It was so interesting.  Cool theme, cool sounds, pretty fun.  I sucked though... so I never got to the bouncer stage.   Getting the instruments wasnt that tough... but afterwards, used to almost always kill me.

Obviously very similar to tron... but maybe not as cheap.  Those lightcycle stages were too unfair IMO.

I've gotten to the bouncer stage in MAME. It's a fun game. I enjoy it.

Am I allowed to pick a game that needs a spinner, or will that be too exclusionary?

Tron is a great game, but not many people have a top fire joystick to go along with the spinner.

How about something different like a Neo Geo Game shmup?  Anyone?
