Once you have all your content loaded, I would kill the internet connection and the antivirus. No need for it at that point if it isn't on a network and nothing is changing on the system, nothing can really hurt it.

especially if you're copy of windows isn't legit ;) ;)
...just saying. not implying. :laugh:

Ok...I will assemble a new PC. Just got a 27" led monitor and it looks so much better than the LCD 26" TV I was using.
I tried Mame .155 64 bit on my primary PC and I don't see a difference...is it worth the time upgrading from mame32 .120.. I only have 170 games.
so many boring slot machine games!!!

I use .149 myself. Got it compiled with high score and no nag, so don't see the point in changing to be honest. Unless the newer version has a feature you really want, I don't see the reason.

The main reason I upgraded to .155 was they got raiden 2 working.

Did you use that compression thing on the executable afterwards? Does anyone?
When I learned MAME and MESS compiled from the same source I've been wanting to get some old XEGS gaming in but have't put enough effort into finding the ROMs.

using something like UPX just makes it take longer to load and use more memory because it has to decompress the entire exe into ram, rather than just loading in the parts of the exe it needs from disk.
0.120 -> 0.155 is a big upgrade, 0.120 is from 2007
I'm planning on doing some older articles, but
http://mamedev.emulab.it/haze/2012-a-year-in-mame/ (http://mamedev.emulab.it/haze/2012-a-year-in-mame/)
http://mamedev.emulab.it/haze/2013-mame/ (http://mamedev.emulab.it/haze/2013-mame/)
cover 2012 and 2013 progress (including stuff in the MESS part of the code) and I'll be doing a 2014 one for this year too because things like Raiden 2 are really big news. Consider that there's just as much work gone into the project in 2007,2008,2009,2010, and 2011 you can imagine you're missing out on a lot if you only use a 2007 build.
there are rumours that 0.156 might just fold the MESS component in by default, but I have no idea if they're anything more than rumours at this stage, might end up making the roms easier to find if that does happen tho.
