If we were being serious here, the alternative to the raspi is a mk808 with a price tag of $45.
Intel NUCs are good for bare metal hyper visors not Mame rigs. Especially at over $380.

Dude, that's like $450 bucks shipped to my door and I still need an OS. Give your head a shake, some of us are happy with playing 10 classics at full speed for $50 and don't give a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about the rest. There is no argument here...move along. :banghead:

I get it, your a web developer, some of us are just everyday dullards who buy retail versions of Windows at Best Buy. So, no, your wrong, I will keep the OS as part of my cost thank you very much...

So to run mame "properly", you NEED an i5 NUC (or faster x86 based PC) and an $800 Asus ROG Swift G-sync LCD monitor. Apparently you also NEED true original leaf switches and since you are running an LCD, the proper HLSL settings. And the right "float" technique.
We are ALL doing it wrong, and there are two experts on this board to set us straight.

This is my position (devil on shoulder is yelling "Stop it, your wasting your time", but anyway), if I am going to spend $450 for a NUC (actually, it now looks like more than that as I live in Canada, so that makes it $550), then I am simply going to install windows and then install any piece of software or program my heart desires without jumping through hoops and enjoy it. That's if I was going to use a NUC to play "Pac Man", but I wouldn't do that, cause I'm not a doorknob, I would just use the Pi for $50 and be happy.
Now, if I wanted to play the latest version of MAME with all the bells and whistles and Hyperspin, then I probably still wouldn't use a NUC, I would piece together my own Mini-ITX for a reasonable price and play whatever the hell I wanted.
I always love the Apple and Windows haters...just too cool for mainstream :laugh2:

Android is still a viable option. It just works for emulators. Why does it have to be so technically difficult or costly to play a 30+ old game? ::)

First, if your paying anything more than $400 for a NUC up here in Canada, your doing it wrong.
Second, if Pi works for some applications, just not yours then your giving bad advice even if you think you're helping.

Using this guide I have my pi booting to advmenu.
Shouldn't be too hard to just call a ROM to boot.
