Hi Guys,
I'm building my own Retrocade using the MikeKim's artwork from the HyperSpin forums.
I love the look, as is, but I also love the idea of LED buttons... I just can't tell if they would look good/terrible on this build:
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

The button layout doesn't make sense to me, you would have to cock your wrist to the right to use it
-
Thanks for the feedback, LightningBolt, but that wasn't the question -- and this layout is from SlagCoin's archive.
Any feedback about using LED buttons with the artwork?
-
After watching Nepsath create the Two Headed beast, I came up with this:
It pales in comparison and doesn't light up yet. But one day I will finish it.
Do whatever you want. LEDs on that are not going to look any better or worse than the white buttons do. I would suggest translucent joystick washers if you can find them.
-
Lit buttons on such a small CP will be kind overwhelming IMO. Too much going on in a small space - juice just isn't worth the squeeze for a bartop I'd say.
But don't let that stop you, if you're dream is glowy buttons then glow'em up man.

That curved layout is actually fine. If they were straight and diagonal, that's when wrist cocking would occur.
-
Thanks guys!
I tend to agree about the LED buttons. I think they can look great on a white bartop... but with the size and the artwork here, I think it's just too much
-
You can change your buttons and you can change your mind. But you can't change your button's mind.
-
I have to agree LED button can be rather overwhelming, I would think on a small bartop even more so.
If you did want to create some LED effect there could be some more subtle options out there for you. I know on build here lit up standard button so the gap around the button glowed. I can try to find the thread if someone else doesn't know where it is. Another option might be to put a much duller/less powered LED in. Most buttons I've seen just crush the LED output, a subtle glow might work better in this case if you wanted some lighting.

I would say no to the led buttons. They are good within reason like having 2 on the Star Wars trilogy CP that light up periodically. But having 12+ buttons lit up constantly will be annoying. Plus having that and your marquee that close...Trust me. The marquee alone is annoying enough. I find myself turning off my marquee most of the time I am playing.
-
Hi Guys,
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!
That looks too small for 2 players.
You can keep your second stick for Robotron. I'd drop the 6 buttons in favor of the 4 Neo Geo buttons. I have a purple coin button that gets bumped periodically. I'd be reluctant to put the power on the front.
-
I think LED buttons are neat, but I wouldnt want them on my cab(s). That being said, I think LED buttons might be a bit much on such a small cab with that art. No harm in wiring up 2 white LEDs for just the start buttons or something.

Scott you are a madman ;D
Thank you.

I like lighted pushbuttons, especially when programmed to light up only the buttons you need for the selected game, but to each his own.
On a side note, a not-related-to-topic question: How wide is that control panel?

I did mention that. For the Beetlejuice effect

If there was an alert for that, Jennifer would get an email every time she posts.

18.5" wide
I love the look with power on the front
Worst case, I'll fill it in with Bondo and replace the artwork on the CP
-
I LOVE those partially illuminated buttons...
Still nowhere to buy them, right? I'd pay a pretty penny.
-
I don't like the woodgrain of the cut ends of wood panels... Painting it black doesn't help hide the grain. T-molding would look much better.
The Shadows in your marquee don't look good either.
Everything else looks good.... You want to illuminate the buttons, check out the milky white IL buttons that Paradisearcadeshop sells... or used to sell...
-
Agreed. Mine uses T-Molding.
Thoughts on black vs white?
Agreed about marquee too. Will play w LED and cathode to see which looks best, as well as placement
-
I'm the picture, MikeKim used tape instead of t molding

Thanks!
Don't see them available with white buttons... How hard would it be to swap out the plunger?

IL buttons are mix-and-match swappable between the translucent and solid colors -- that's how Neph did his before Bryan started carrying the black plunger/clear bezel ILs.
PM Bryan (Armi0024) to see if he will sell you a set of white plunger/clear bezel buttons. :dunno

I'd like to weigh in with my 2-cents, (but the Canadian dollar is down right now, so you'd begetting the short end of the deal...)
didn't someone make that joke in a thread last week??
...ANYWAYS. RGB LED Buttons. Not cheap, and quite time consuming. if you get that feeling that it's something you want, and you think it would add to the build then by all means jump in head first. Mind you I went the same route that Neph did and made my own custom leads and crimped every connection by hand. you can get prebuilt kits too, just really depends on what you want to accomplish and how much money you have to burn.
Seriously looks bad ass tho. It was a lot of hard work and there is that cool wow factor with having the lights show up for each of the buttons per game. could be cool to see white plungers with clear surrounds too. One bad ass idea is to use CLASSX leaf switch buttons. Randy has clear CLASSX buttons now (not shown on his sit yet tho), but he's been clear to me that he doesn't sell them with miss-matched solid colour plungers because of various reasons that i totally get. So You'd need to buy 2 sets of buttons... Or buy half clear and half white and P1 gets the clear ring and P2 gets the clear plunger. that could be cool! Especially with White, GGG leaf switch buttons.... hmmmm.
I don't know, Now that i've done it I don't think i'll do it on any future builds. It's kinda the feature on FLYNN's and so bloody time consuming.
All i know if it wasn't for Neph's build i wouldn't have done it, (even though others did it too his execution and attention to detail was inspirational). Mind you his help and guidance though my process did help balance the massive hit to the wallet he caused me with said inspiration. ;) ;)

Oh, you big baby.
-
Wasn't really a complaint as much as it was a comment on how I want to keep that to the one build to keep it original from my other future planned builds.

I personally think red buttons and black sticks would be best.
No need for led unless your planning on using led blinky or something.

Last year, you leaked my theme plans for Flynn's when you noticed I bough Flynn's arcade tokens on eBay before I announced what I was doing. Haha. Read my build thread. I even had a half assed lie about "just wanting them for my collection".
I'm announcing a new build after I complete Flynn's in the next few weeks.
Anyways.... Yes. Sorry. Didn't mean to derail the thread.
