I'd like to suggest creating a sticky for completed builds. I'm thinking of a thread where builders can post maybe a few pics of the finished cab and a link to their thread. I think it would be helpful to have a place where all completed builds are listed when looking for a cab whose name one forgot, or to discover threads one has missed. It might also come in handy come nomination time.
-
Set a rule for 1 pic of the finished cab and a link to the project thread or construction blog.
I second this idea. I think it would be very useful.
-
Not a bad idea. I'm for it. I'd even be up for a new sticky for each year, as a pre-qualification for being considered for a UCA Award (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,138057.msg1425581.html#msg1425581). Would probably make nominating cabinets much easier.
-
I'd love to see this done. I'm still in the planning stages (about 5 years into it,lol) and I'd love to have a place to see completed cabs. If you like what you see you can then go and read through the build thread.

thewayiplay.com has something similar
But really, who is to say when a project is finally completed?
This has been suggested before, its gonna take some "I read all 60 pages and created a FAQ" type spirit to do this.

There are already 10 build categories/wiki pages for this. ;D
http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Upright_cabinets (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Upright_cabinets)
It's really easy to copy/paste/edit a new entry and upload a pic for your build . . . or someone else's build if you have permission from the person who took the photo.
Still waiting on your pic for this build (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=2_player_Lowboy_with_22%22_Monitor), GE. :P
If anyone wants wiki editing/upload access LMK.

Not to discredit the work compiling the list of cabs there, or even the cabs themselves, but I would love something more chronological and not by name. If I am looking for ideas, chances are most things novel to a 10 year old cabinet are gonna be improved upon since then. Cabinets also tended to be a bit larger in the day. Trends change, tech changes as well.

I agree that it would be nice to have a sampling of builds (5 or 6?) from each year to show the changing trends and technology.

Can the projects announcement boards be sorted by date?
-
That would not help you finding just the finished builds. With the sticky, you would have one pic per cab, could easily scroll down Memory Lane and find the one you are looking for (and perhaps rediscover cabs you have forgotten about).

Overview topic. 1 pic of every setup. Click on the pic to view its topic. (http://www.thewayiplay.com/mainforum/index.php?topic=200.0)
In this topic you can see 1 picture from every setup that is on display on TWIP. Simply click on the picture that interests you and you will get directed to the topic that it is from.
You cannot put pictures in this topic yourself. It will remain closed at all times. I will update it daily so if you make a new topic showing your setup, you can rest assured it will appear in this topic the next day or sooner.
If you would like a different picture from your topic in the overview than is in there now, please PM me and I'll change it for you.
Enjoy the show!
The difference is that was down by the admin on the site It seems that an admin would have to do it here otherwise how can you keep someone from replying to the thread.
There are 106 pages with 30 to 40 entries on each I think. I think its a great idea. I think if a person wanted to see it done, they'd have to do the legwork for the mod. *shrug*
-
Looking for inspiration, I browsed through most of the 106 pages of project announcements just a couple nights ago. Unfortunately a lot of cool sounding builds no longer had working image links. :(

Umm, my idea was that the thread would be populated by the builders themselves. You finish a build, you post a pic and a link in the sticky, that's it. I would count on people to behave themselves and not to post anything that does not belong there (high hopes, I know). So this would probably start with recently finished builds and then hopefully grow from there.

I think this is a great idea. When I was designing my cab I went through the CP sticky thread countless times to research (and just to look at the amazing builds).
I would have loved this thread even more had it existed. Hopefully I will add mine next month.
-
First shot fired :)
I like that you added the when you finished.
Beyond that, and maybe when you started too, I think less is more.
I hope that this catches on. When I think back about how I approached this before, I can see that I was unintentionally help it not happen. I hope it catches on.
-
Me too ;D
-
Ok, like a half dozen builds and the thread is already bad ass. (I can just picture Scott looking despondent, slouched over holding a picket sign that reads "Wiki")
As soon as I'm done my Flynn build its going in the thread.
Great call.

What did I do wrong with the file?
I tried to attach it, that didn't work. So I just tried to link it. Also didn't work. Despite being confused, I want to go on record saying that I support the wiki.
-
Oh, don't get me wrong the wiki is awesome. But yeah, other then the random mention by Scott I never think to look there. Ever.
This new thread, once populated over time, will be a nice way to browse and waste a bunch of time. :)

Sticky granted. :cheers:

You broke the wiki!!!1! jk :P . . . and thanks for the words of support.
Not sure what is causing the errors. :dunno
BTW, The wiki is designed to upload photos from your hard drive instead of linking/uploading from the web to keep it from relying on remote content and make it harder to rip off content from other sites.

I know right! If only the Wiki was some how editable and someone could just make a "completed cabs - 2014" page or something and maybe put it in chronological order instead of alphabetical.
I kid I kid, the wiki wont take off because no one ever thinks to put anything there which in turn makes no one think to look there for info. So its a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I added a Builds by year (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Builds_by_year) page to the wiki Examples (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Examples) category.
I included the alphabetical Upright Cab list on that page for easy cut/pasting of classic builds like 1UP's Pac-Mamea! and Doc's Modular into the correct year -- I'll remove the alphabetical list once the desired examples are moved to the correct year.
I'll probably add pages/links for Hall of Fame and UCA nominees, too.
If anyone wants their build added, just drop me a PM either asking for wiki access or specifying which photo you'd like for your build page.

http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Super_PlayChoice (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Super_PlayChoice)

Nice. Thanks Scott!
Under Aditional Details can you put something to the effect of: "This project was the result of people telling Chance that it couldn't be done". ...or something. ;D

Done.
It still needs "Monitor Type:" -- Did the wireless video work or did you install an HDMI connection?
Second build added.

:D Nice.
Both, I can airplay it, but there is a tiny bit of lag. I would say Airplay is the Primary, and HDMI is the auxiliary.
Maybe for Flynn's you can use as much info and images from the top half of the first post of the build thread. But just the top half: thanking everyone, showing the cabs that inspired it, the link to the flickr gallery, the link to the side panel CAD, and the other 5 images that follow? Or is that too much?
-
in fact those cabs that i reference are all in their own right amazing builds as well.
This build was made possible with the inspiration from the following other builds. Check them out:
Nephasth - Two-Headed Beast (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,108719.0.html)
edekoning - Magneto (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119175.0/all.html)
SpaceHedgehog - R-Pod MkII Racing Simulator (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,138146.0.html)
blind_dado - Arcade Odyssey (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,89624.msg942128.html)
mcseforsale - The Blue Pill (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,117977.msg1250249.html)
EMDB - Project RetroCade (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,130690.0.html)

Updated.
Added a mention of the NUC being in the case since some people may not understand (or notice) the term "Barstick".

That might be a bit much, especially considering that you did such a great job of organizing that info in your build thread OP. ;D
Like the Completed Project thread, the idea is a short overview, a picture, and a link to the build thread with all the gory details.
People browsing these pages, are often looking for CP layouts, controls, encoders, monitors, and other technical details or special features to help them refine their build ideas.
You may want to just list technical details/parts/features like:
* RGB LED buttons
* Standardized Molex wiring for easy LED maintenance
* 2 x PacLED64 Advanced LED Controller
* UltraStik 360
* Joystick lighting tubes, etc.
(BTW, I'm not going through all 15 pages to find all the details for you :P)
Just post the exact details/text here that you want to include and I'll copy/paste it to the wiki with the proper formatting. :cheers:
Scott

:D ok, how about this:
* IL RGB LED buttons with game specific lighting
* Standardized Molex wiring for easy LED maintenance
* 2 x PacLED64 Advanced LED Controller
* 2 x UltraStik 360 and J-Sticks
* Custom Joystick lighting tubes.
* Matching embroidered Stool
* Themed tokens, keychain, Coin reject buttons, I/O panels, and serial number plate.
* Authentic polycarb CP vinyl lamination
* Griffin PowerMate volume knob mod.
* Swagger

Scott strikes back ! Take that, Chance ! ;D
A suggestion for Scott : Would it be possible to make the thumbnails on the "Builds by year" frontpage bigger ? My desktop resolution is 1920x1200, looking at those thumbnails I'm barely able to make out that it is a pic of a cab, but I don't get the details at first glance. That is part of why I suggested the sticky.

How does it look now? (feedback wanted from individuals with high-res monitors, low-res monitors, and surfing via phone ;D)
Changed the thumbnails on the "Builds by year" page from 68 to 128 pixels wide. (left a 68 pixel Pac-Mamea after the 128 pixel version here (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Builds_by_year#2002) so people can compare the new to the original size)
Once this page grows to the size of the Upright Cabs page, will the larger photos cause omplaints on how long it takes to scroll through the list?
Hopefully we can find a good balance between showing enough details and ease of scrolling.

Hey Scott,
If you trust me, why don't you hook me up with some sweet, sweet wiki access. I know what I am doing enough to maybe knock a few of these projects out on the list, and upload my own shared projects as well. I can keep sizes consistent. I can't guarantee I can get to anything right away, but I'll do what I can.
-
I can give you my creds so I look like a more active wiki user

you don't want to give me your wiki creds, I'd get way too creative. >:D
