Title: Bartop Marquee Light Installation
Post by: newoski on October 21, 2014, 09:22:00 am
Hi Guys,

I'm using Tippers kit (similar to TinyArcadeMachine) and am trying to figure out the best way/placement to mount the marquee light.

Do I need to mount the LEDs centered directly the behind the marquee?

Or can I simply mount the LED strip to the top of the marquee retainer?

Thanks,

Owen

You'll need to post a link to "Tipper's Kit" or at least pictures of the current state of your build if you want any true insight.

Is your marquee "box" only accessible from the front?  Is the plexi removable after mounting?

If so, find a temporary way to mount it.  How much light you need is going to be based on the colors of the marquee you mount anyhow.

So,

Also speakers.

Where are you going to fit your speakers?  Mount those first, then your light.

Just make sure your light is in FRONT of the speakers, or else you will see the shadow of the speakers on your marquee.

If it were me, I'd buy two L brackets and attach them to the top inside of the marquee area.  Then use velcro strips to attach an LED light or cold cathode tube to them.

You may want to check out this as well (although be sure that it will fit first before you buy it) - It comes with Velcro by the way.

Thanks so much, guys!

Delusional -- assuming you are THE Delusional -- thanks as well for your YouTube videos. They were really helpful as I started researching this project.

Assuming it's from my channel:  www.youtube.com\delusional2971 (http://www.youtube.com/user/delusional2971) then yeah, it's me.  LOL.  You're welcome.  I've always enjoyed helping fellow arcade enthusiasts out.  No question is ever too small.  We all have to start somewhere!  Good luck with your project!

With mine, I'm using velcro.

This is my light:

These are my speakers. I left them in the case, just placed them above the speakers grills:

I have had good luck with LED strips.  From the picture, I would attach it higher on the back of the light box area, facing forward. It looks like it would clear just about any speakers that way, and there is more than enough depth to diffuse the LED light and backlight the marquee evenly.  The only thing I would consider if you go LED is adding a PWM dimmer so you can dial it in to the right brightness, those LED's are bright and sometimes too bright.  If you did end up with a shadow, it would be easy to move the led strip or add a couple more segments in other places to fix shadows.
