Title: X-men Arcade Remixed - Updated pics
Post by: gbeef on October 14, 2014, 04:12:13 pm
I had Killer instinct Cabinet that was mamed i bought a over 8 years ago but couldn't think for a cabinet to revamp it as, There was one thing i really wanted was 4 players.
I thing i like to do is play Homage to older machines, but revamping it with modern feel.

I loved the X-men arcade machine back when i was kid, so i figured i would do a design based on the that machine. For the art I sourced different black and white images, from one of my favourite marvel artist art adams, because they were black and white i had to combine all the different images together then colour the whole thing. Also art adams never drew, Dazzler so i had to redraw a rogue image to look like her.

For the CP i rebuilt it from scratch. Rather then try and hack the KI redesign. Ill post some better pictures once the monitor instructions are complete. But heres where I'm at so far.
I couldn't believe how long takes to do a CP all that Drilling!..   The LED's can lock into a certain colour or just go random. enjoy.

I'm right now in the middle ordering new glass and building a custom bezel.

Tremendous job on the art. Makes the original look like a sad knock-off.

Nothing wrong with Open Ice, Hopefully you won't have to redo a CP though. You can always remix it like i did..

Here are some more photos on my crappy phone. I just finished the bezel got the new glass the last couple things are to reskin the front end and to do a bezel instruction sticker.

The bezel was made from poster paper and then spray paint to go over a 27" TV. which i cut to get into the cabinet. The cabinet has a slimmer profile for 4 players i wanted to keep the bulk down on the CP, So it didn't look like a giant eye sore. Finding that right balance was interesting.

Enjoy the pics.

Forgot to add. Im working on a bezel instruction card.
Im going to draw this one out. I think master mold would be cool to add to cabinet. Heres a sketch But i may just use the head depending on the size of the graphic.
Ill post WIP as i go.

Do you have any graphics on the inside?  Paint it like the Danger Room!

Master Mold would be neat, but since Magneto is the main villain, why not use him? Or all of the boss villains?

 :laugh2:

Someone do a collage where all the Street Fighter or Marvel characters are sitting nice and neatly in rows, like in a school picture, instead of the usual jumble where they're all standing in unnatural positions preening for the "camera" and flexing their 'roided out muscles. I'd pay for that one*.

*No, I wouldn't.

Well, I meant more like Wendigo, Nimrod, Ice Queen, Mystique, Pyro, Blob, Juggernaut, and Magneto in some sort of piece. Heck, you could probably leave out half of them, and just have Pyro, Blob, Mystique, and Magneto.

It's your cabinet, so do what you think is best, but I just thought that villains from the game would work better than Mastermold.

Hater. Peepers was the greatest villian ever.  :lol Unus the untouchable is a close 2nd.

Mags. wouldn't be bad except you really don't see him till the very end. I think of Sentinels being the main villains since there in every level also the the cabinet has Xmen and Sentinels. Kinda want to stick with the theme. Once you start tossing villains it would look like mishmash….

Im reviewing the space at the bottom, also there maybe room for head only… Not sure yet. The idea was to have just a instructions not to completely wrap the bezel.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

That classroom picture would be hilarious!.

Just noticed this:  Are those Supers for players 1 and 2 and Comps for players 3 & 4?

Your are correct SIR... thats a pretty good eye. :applaud:

Why did i mix controllers?
Cuz I think supers are better for fighting games to hit diagonals. I personally own Comps, Supers, And Ultimates. And yes I've tried all of them.

DIAGONALS are better on supers hands down. Yeah they wear down over time, but your talking about machine thats for home use. So i doubt ill ever have to change them.

The problem with supers. They only come in BLACK. you cannot get multi colors. So i painted the supers joysticks. If the paint chips im going to mod, coloured Comps by cutting down the supers washer. (which i own) Well see.

I completely understand about the diagonals and I second that choice.   :applaud:  Did you paint them with Vinyl Dye?

On another note, I actually bought red super joystick knock-offs (years ago so I can't remember where I bought them online).  And they still work fine to this day.  I've attached a crude pic that was captured from my youtube video, as I'm not in front of my machine at the moment.

for paint i used Kyrlon spray paint with 3 coats of Clear matte over top. Will see how this holds up.
Maybe i can find a knock off red and yellow.

Here's a link to VHT Vinyl Dye spray.  It goes on like paint but it actually chemically bonds to the plastic, dying it whatever color you apply (it even keeps the texture of the original piece).  Simply prime it by cleaning it with Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser and start painting.  Works great!

Here's a video of it:

I put my IR blasters in my bezel.  I cut small holes for the IR leds to pop out of (the rest of the circuit board is in the back).  You don't really notice them unless I point them out.  I'll see if I can grab a pics of my bezel to show you.

That is just a work of art.  I have an X-Men Konami cab in my garage that had destroyed artwork.  Cabinet has been prepped and I am about to make it into a 4 Player machine for my kids.  Not sure yet what I will end up doing for art but I am pretty certain, it wont look that good.  Great job, that looks awesome.

I stuck mine right in the front of the cabinet. The cables go up into the bottom of the control panel.
