Title: Slime Time Arcade
Post by: Dungeonsdeep on October 03, 2014, 02:41:05 pm
Wanted to post my build thus far. Everyone here and at the HS forums have been a great help so far.

Slime Time Arcade. The theme references the early 90's when slime was all the rage. I am going to be focusing mainly on games from that era.

I am building off a SFII cabinet that a member here traded me for an old Williams cab I had gotten for free. He wanted to restore, I wanted MAME. All is good in the universe!

Here is the cab as it sits. Running nice and smooth. Gotta love the Mini-pac. Wow what a great easy-to-use product. Inexpensive too.

So now has come the point for me to begin overhauling the cabinet (I know, sort of backwards).

I work in a print shop, so printing the Marquee and bezel will not be a problem. But I have to send away for the CP and side art as I have no access to a medium format laminator.

I found an online template for designing your own cab, and as a disclaimer, this was basically slapped together as a reference for me to match up colors, not a final design. I am really keen on the blue and green combo.

As you can see, it looks pretty bad in the mock up, but I will be keeping everyone updated so hopefully you can eventually see my vision.

So far, the only thing I have actually completed in terms of art design is the bezel;

I'll let you know updates as they happen! Criticism is very welcome!

Love the unique theme idea!  I would remove the name from the bezel and only keep it on the marquee and sides to avoid being too redundant.

Now I need some glow-in-the-dark Gak.

I like the idea of the front end directions being on the bezel. :applaud:

Do you actually intend to have the buttons on the left of the sticks or did you just mirror your image?

Thank you! Yes I am one step ahead of you. In the final draft art I have since removed it. I made the bezel first and didn't realize after making the marquee how repetitive it would look. Plus it's hard to see anyway with the shadow created by the Marquee.

Hahaha, no. I don't know what that's all about.

Thanks. I am trying to make it as intuitive and simple as possible. I ended up having to change the exit button to Player one down + P1 start + P2 start. We kept closing out of games as I have the button set to both insert coin AND start (haven't experienced any problems doing this so far). Can anyone suggest a better key command short of adding a new button to the Control panel?

Nice theme. I wouldn't use the Hyperspin logo on the cabinet though. What if you decide to use another frontend later on?

Me neither. Since likely only you will understand what hyperspin is anyways keeping random branding off of your machine makes it more personal.

Oh, I AM USING Hyperspin. I have spent FAR too many hours pulling my hair out just to get this stupid monstrosity of a frontend to work, there is no way I'm giving up on it now  :lol

As far as branding goes... Like  I mentioned earlier, I work in a print shop. I make posters and banners for events around the state.... I have found that, when you finish a poster, and there is no branding logo on it. It looks "unofficial". Or another example, I recreated a Secret of Mana poster for my home office using the artwork found here: https://secure.static.tumblr.com/f801c21976b75ac4b02895036f930788/1jfn6w5/8BGn2ssgh/tumblr_static_2434666-cover.jpg (https://secure.static.tumblr.com/f801c21976b75ac4b02895036f930788/1jfn6w5/8BGn2ssgh/tumblr_static_2434666-cover.jpg)

But after adding some logos, a bonafide Printed in Japan and serial code. I think it takes on a more official look; https://www.dropbox.com/s/j1lzsy7mrkd0d18/20140904_111808.jpg?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/j1lzsy7mrkd0d18/20140904_111808.jpg?dl=0)

Either way. I will certainly take that into account, maybe just shrinking the logo and putting it in the lower corner.... Hell if I change my mind I'll just print another. Thank you!

Other than the company logo, real arcade cabs usually didn't have a whole lot of printing marks. Maybe you could make your own brand/logo. Something like DungeonsDeep Games Inc.

How about having to hold P1 start + P2 start for 3 seconds to exit?

Hmm, Ok, yeah I suppose something like that might be cool.

Wow...How would I go about that? Is this something I would have to set in Hyperlaunch? Currently I have HL disabled for MAME.
