Hi
So i just got Sony trinitron pal tv and hooked it up via vga scart cable all is runnin just fine but what suprised me on this set are massive thick scanlines which are just like mame filter 100% scanlines. The question is this legit arcade look or my set is just not suited for 240 progressive.I would take some pics but no camera here so u could all see.I have one more pal tv old thomson 21" and the scanlines are soft and subtle more like RGB effect in mame.So the question is what is more authentic thick scanlines or more subtle ones. Thanks

the scanlines on big and old sonys are more noticable compared to those on smaller and newer tvs or other brands . if u dont like it u should scout the market for a 25-28 inch philips . i once had a kv29x5d sony , a very nice tv set , but useless for lowres arcade . i dont like 29 inch lowresgaming at all and the sucker weights a ton . so i kept the chassis to repair a broken 25inch sony and trashed the rest.
if it has to be a 29 inch go for a 50-60 hertz tv from the end ninetees with a philips or a toshiba tube , or consider a smaller and newer sony tv like 21x4d , x5d oder 25x5d . so yeah , the thick scanlines are sony specific ( same on the pvm sony broadcasting monitor series ) . some people like it , others dont .
for lowres retrogaming i prefer 20-21 inch monitors / tvs made in the ninetees with philips , toshiba , orion or hitachi tubes . they all have the rough but sharp look u remember from classic arcade machines . newer tvs - tubes ( after year 2000 ) tend to be a little synthetic and superfine without noticable scanlines , which is ok for 640x480 or 800x600 but with 320x240 it sometimes looks very wrong , more like gaming on a lcd screen .
in summery i would say both ur tv sets may be suboptimal for arcade purpose . thomson ( and samsung , tschungwa china etc. ) are mostly lowcost tubes combined with crappy chassis in discounter tvs . there are only a handful worthy for storing , usually the smaller ones < 21 inch . i never encountered a crt of the mentioned manufacturers in 28-29-33 inch of satisfying quality .

Thanks for clearing that out
Well i have to check for better tv set but it isnt very easy trying in front of everybody 240p they all think you are some lunatic trying to achieve perfect picture.Well nevermind sony i can have it as backup but the still think the thomson have nice scanlines not so pronouced well just about right what i remember from arcade. The think is i want something bigger for my tastes.I would have to check if any phillips or toshibas are availible.

as an alternative u may check for a grundig with cuc 5xxx or 6xxx chassis . 5xxx are nearly arcade perfect , same as the st ( stereo ) cuc 6xxx models .
-
Well i have to check some more tv's will try the grundig i think i saw one but it was far away. Thanks for help

What about Grundig ST 63-710 wort checking out or not.

the tv uses cuc 2030 , a modern digital chassis with osd and a philips a59 tube ( or toshiba oem ) . not bad at all , but may have some probs with 256 p games like rtype . older analog chassis are more compatible and sync nearly up to 17 khz . with crt emudriver u can compensate some issues via arcade osd . if u can get this one for cheap take it and try it out . the tube allone is worth it and can be driven by many tv and arcadechassis .

Sony's use an aperture grill. They're really sharp and the scanlines are extremely pronounced. Arcade monitors generally used a shadow mask which is not quite as sharp and the scanlines less noticeable. You're right though - the Sony's look a bit like someone slapped a 100% scanline filter over the display. It's all personal preference of course. :)
The question is this legit arcade look
I would say not really, if you can find a shadow mask TV try that out for a more authentic look. Just make sure it supports RGB or Component!.
