From KLOV:

Armed with a bow and arrows and slabs of meat, mama pig must defend/save her piglets from the wolves ballooning up or down the cliff. Move up and down, shoot the balloons, watch the wolves plummet and splat. There are various bonus rounds.

The story revolves around a family of little pink piglets who have been attacked and/or captured by a monstrous pack of hungry wolves. The mama pig, who was not attacked or captured attempts to save and/or protect her chubby little family. Armed with a bow and arrows and slabs of meat, she jumps into a cage that moves up and down on a rope. Meanwhile, the wolves use helium balloons to float down from a tree limb while throwing rocks at Mama. Mrs. Pig tries to shoot their balloons with her arrows so the wolves will fall to their deaths or she hurls slabs of meat at them to make them let go. If she misses, the wolves will safely reach the ground and climb a ladder to try to bite her.

Also, if any of the wolves reach the ground, more piglets will be captured by them. So Mrs.Pig must try to kill as many wolves as possible without letting them reach the ground.

On the second level, the wolves use balloons to float to the top of a high cliff. If enough of them reach the cliff, they will push a huge boulder down onto Mama's cage. After this level has been completed, the piglets who have been captured are rescued and the game starts over with increased difficulty.

There is also a bonus round where Mrs. Pig will attempt to eliminate as many wolves on ascending balloons as possible by throwing as few slabs of meat as possible for a maximum bonus score.

Earlier today, I was thinking of picking something more 'obscure' that I find enjoyable to play in short bursts, like Nato Defense, Navarone , Rip Off or Hole Land.  Then I came up with a list of games that I was sure had probably been selected previously, but surprisingly were not (Donkey Kong Junior, Congo Bongo, Journey, Kangaroo) but ended up selecting Pooyan as I believe it is more likely to be 'newer' to some players and thus more equally competitive. Plus, it's pretty fun.

I'm no ringer - that's not why I selected it - so you probably won't see me too much on the scoreboard.

Best of luck!

Let the Poo jokes begin!

I like Nato defense as well!   Have you played Thief?   It's made by the same company.   I like it a little bit more.

The voices in Nato Defense are very amusing!  Quality voice acting there!

I may have played thief...(wondering if that's the one where do drive around on streets, then go into buildings, then back out to street?)

Oh, and I also like Kix.  Even saw them at Hammerjacks back in the day.  My nick is also band related, in case you weren't aware.  (Sometimes I figure people just assume I'm from Hanoi..)

Not sure if this will inspire or depress, but to quote Wikipedia:

"David Hanzman of Rochester, NY, USA, scored a world record 1,609,250 points on the arcade version of Pooyan on December 16, 1983."

Funny, I saw a similar blurb for Armor Attack, something like 2,000,000+, but I still couldn't break 7,000.

If this doesn't count, that's cool. I've got no problem with that. I'm sure I won't be close to the high score anyway. This one is simple but tricky.

Nice mini build !! - Don't see any reason it wouldn't count -- figure the rules pretty much allow play on any setup. At least it took you 6 tries to beat judging from your high score screen !

:-[ yeah. Took me a couple tries to figure out that bonus stage. Those double 2:29 runs were back to back, believe it or not.  :lol

Yeah it takes a few games to get accustomed to (first try I couldn't figure out why the arrow wouldn't shoot in the bonus round  :banghead:) -- found out you get more points using the meat and hitting the groups as the score increases each hit (ie. 200 400 800 1600 1600) and those 1600 point hits sure help the final score if you can get them) Once you figure out which ones will go upward in a large group you can pick up some quick points (if you avoid getting hit when trying!)

Score has improved a bit after a few more tries -- 87,450

I started looking up Hanoi Rocks and then realized that was the band Vince Neil tore apart.   Can't say I've heard much from them but I'm always looking for something different.   I've seen Kix about 10 times.   I've been temped to make a trip to Baltimore (about 8 hours away).

Yes, the voices are very funny in both games.   Some might take offense to Nato I suppose!

118,050 after a few tries.  I also used to play this on my Atari 800.  Actually, I didn't even know it was an arcade game when I discovered it on an *ahem* compilation disk given to me by a high school friend.  Seems it was a pretty good port.

By the way does anyone else find it strange that in this game you are a protective mother pig that throws dead pig carcasses at your enemies?
 ???

Oh, and JD you should get BONUS points for playing on that tiny thing  :applaud:

I'll see your 118050 and raise to 120900..

I never knew the mama pig was throwing 'meat' until I looked it up on klov.  I thought it was like two hearts or something.  Anyone know when that appears?  Is it random or timed or after shooting x amount if arrows?

It's actually LT (Louis Tully) that was playing the mini !! (and I agree it should be given extra points with that small of a screen)

From what I read earlier ( http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/932325-oretachi-game-center-zoku-pooyan/faqs/26414 (http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/932325-oretachi-game-center-zoku-pooyan/faqs/26414) ) :

Quote
First of all some general principles: you usually get two pieces of meat to
shoot at the monsters at level's start, and the meat reappears once the number
of wolves left(the sign in the upper left) reaches a multiple of eight. You
can't store up meat for later use, but you can also chuck meat quickly with the
monsters at a multiple of eight and get another one(it's still a multiple of
eight)

Kix, nice score.  I was just coming on to post 152500.  You got me by 1000.  (wish I had hit all the strawberries in the 2nd bonus round!)

I think I've got some decent strategies, but need to implement better.
Title: Re: High score competition #149 : Pooyan
Post by: HanoiBoi on September 18, 2014, 06:40:29 am
Tried again this morning.  I got the strawberries plus a few more balloons.  Pretty good game.  Pretay, pretay good.

My last guy ended with the wolves dropping the boulder on me when I had just one more to hit in the level.  On the level when the wolves rise, it felt like it was raining the 'blocker' ballons, which made it tough to hit shots.

I really do like this game.  I never saw it in the wild - only discovered it in mame.  Simple theme, yet challenging, and gradually tougher with each level.

My new (all time) high 256800.

We’ve still got another week on this competition.  Anyone who thinks they’ve peaked on the scoring, I’m pretty sure you can go higher.

I can offer a few tips that I came up with while playing that may or may not be obvious…

1)   After knocking a wolves off their balloons with the meat, you can still shoot the balloons with your arrows for points.  As mentioned earlier in the thread, try knocking down as many wolves as possible with each throw of the meat….but after you do, keep shooting quickly to get some of those balloons!

2)   The more you play, you’ll see a pattern as to how the wolves come out and be able to see when a ‘cluster’ is coming for prime scoring with the meat.  And it does seem that the meat will be regenerated for you when the cluster is just about to launch.  Grab it and use it wisely.

3)   If you can, boost your score by shooting the rocks that the wolves throw.  If you watch them, you’ll see when they are winding up to throw.  They seem to throw when you are lined up with them.  Knowing this, you can also try to ‘bait’ them to throw when you expect it.  When they throw the rock, I usually need to move up slightly to shot the rock.

4)   Here’s my favorite strategy to milk a few points.  On the stages when the wolves are ‘rising’, the last wolf (which has a flickering rainbow colored balloon) takes about 5 straight shots to get down – meaning he blocks the first 4 shots and the 5th pops his balloon.  If he gets to the top, your wolf ‘count’ goes back up to 5.  But 5 more wolves means more points to be had!  If you’ve done well enough in the stage to keep wolves from getting to the top, let that last one get to the top and then score more points on the next 5…popping their balloons and shooting their rocks.  Same with the last guy…you can try to bait some rocks out of him too.  You can do this a few times with that last wolf, if you can afford him getting to the top. (Goal: try to milk an additional 5,000 on the stage)

5)   You can also try to milk points on the stages when the wolves float down, but it’s a bit more difficult if you let too many wolves on the ladder as they can get you from the side.  I usually maybe let 2 get down, then decide to finish the round.  (Goal: On the first stage of the game, try to score 20,000 without losing a pig)

6)   I’ll guess that everyone’s figured this out, but the meat seems to bounce off of the ‘solo’ balloons (no wolf hanging), so time your meat shots appropriately.  One bad shot and a cluster of wolves can get to the top and that’ll pretty much be it.

7)   The more you play, the more familiar you’ll be with the balloon blocking and how many hits it might take to pop a balloon (pop / block, pop / block, block, pop).  By knowing this, you’ll better know how many shots to fire before quickly moving to the next wolf/balloon.  (If you wait to see if the last shot was effective, you'll run out of time on other wolves and cause a chain reaction of not being able to pop enough)

8 )   There are some more strategies that I recognize in some later stages, but haven’t fully been able to capitalize on because by the time I get there, I haven’t played the stage enough to see what to do.  The main one being when certain balloons take a few hits…when a balloon goes from green > yellow > red… the red balloon/wolf floats up pretty slowly.  I imagine if done right, you could group a couple of those slow floaters and then ‘meat’ them along with a rising ‘cluster’ for some decent points.  I know, I know…easier said than done.

I haven’t searched for any techniques on the internet or any tutorials on youtube – these are just some observations by me.  Hope they help raise your scores.

I had a few good games in a row then went cold.

@Hanoiboi - I had not thought about point # 4.

I THINK on the stages with the wolves floating down if the ladder is full of wolves I think you can time out the level by defending yourself.   It is very hard but I think it happened to me but not sure.

Nice scores kixfan.  I tested the possible time out thing on the very first screen. I never saw any timeout occur, but i did learn that the level doesn't end when the ladder gets full.  I guess I assumed that they'd get me if they climbed to the top.  So, I know I can try to milk points, but something I observed when trying this is that the next level (of rising balloons) is more difficult than if I didn't milk it.  When I finished the first level,  think  I actually saw '26 pigs captured'.  This probably has something to do with the next level being harder.  Other than that, I don't know what the pros or cons of the wolves actually getting the pigs.  Any idea?

I did up my score too.  I'll probably keep trying to reach 300k, but who knows.

I too don't understand the "number of pictures captured" thing. Confusing.

But, I do understand that I got some more poo yesterday: 175,950 pooints.

Thanks,

Had to go back and try a few more - it was bad enough to have popsicle ahead of me but then jasonbar had to pass me also :laugh2: still haven't caught kixfan  - 185,700

Hate it when the meat bounces off and comes back at you instead of hitting the wolves and you wind up with 3 or 4 on the side ladder from 1 group

Scores and standing have been updated in the first post.  I've got a pretty good hold on 1st place, but not unattainable.  I would love to see someone beat that score....or waste time trying.

Either way, whoever comes in 1st or 2nd will get to select the next game for competition...so if you want your voice heard, make one last push before Sunday night!

I have been squeaking out a few more points here and there and getting better at the later levels.   It doesn't seem to get that much harder after level 8.    I came up 500 points short of another pig and lost 2 pigs on level 2 with 1 coming at the end of the level.

I saw Kix's update and knew it could be a late night.

I do have to disagree though about it not getting harder.  I find it tougher with each level, but really have a tough time with the 'down' levels.

With that said, my 3rd game tonight and I broke 300k, and then some.  333,750.  Will I be the super duper pooper?

Tardy submission, but it doesn't change anything. I played a bit more last night, but I didn't squeak into 2nd place, so I didn't post then. Just posting so that I feel better about myself.

Yep I got caught up in playing the new Gauntlet release and forgot to give it a final few play throughs myself ! (wanted to at least break the 200K mark - guess I'll have to wait and see what the next pic is instead !)
