Title: Not a cab, TurboGrafx Shelf [finished]
Post by: DarakuTenshi on September 15, 2014, 02:26:36 pm
This may not be a cab that I'm building, but it is going to have similar features... so I thought I'd post it anyway.

This shelf is built to hold 184 games (without the boxes... only jewel cases). So it will hold the entire US collection including all of the homebrew releases and some additional Japanese games that are worth of me collecting.

The shelf will have a marquee that is lit up by LED strips along with each shelf having an LED strip to light the games up in the dark. I will also use an orange t-molding for the classic TG16 accent color.

I just picked up the wood today and will begin building it later tonight. I am not fully sure how I'm going to do it just yet, but I've got the idea in my head. I just hope it all works the way I'm thinking. I will be using bondo to make a nice sealant on the wood to leave a very smooth texture and color it with a glossy black.

I love the idea.  Following with interest.

looks like a cool project.
that would cool to do multiple shelves like that for multiple systems even.
I really didn't know there were that many titles for TG16, are there a lot of homebrews?

I think the official releases are at 147 for the US and around 10 homebrew releases. The PC  Engine on the other hand is around 740 or so.

Great idea! This kinda reminds me of some old topic where this guy showed off his collection. He had this NES closet (like the ones they used to have in the shops) which displayed all his NES games. That also looked really cool.

Are you done collecting these? If so make sure your collection fits nicely without leaving any large empty spaces. The render currently does show multiple empty shelves, and that would be a shame.

Nice idea, I love accessories :)

If the gloss black doesn't work out, try blackboard vinyl - not shiny but has a lovely texture and is easy to apply.

I like it. The only change I would suggest is to add a glass door. I have smallish kids, a nosy teenager, and 3.5 cats that tend to get into my open shelves. Adding doors to my crappy old cabinets kept prying fingers away from the collection.

Yes, I am in the middle of collecting them... it's become quite the horrid addiction. I've got about 60 of the US games right now and several of the hard games to come by. So, there will be a few empty shelves right now  :-[ . Slowly it is growing.

Today I got all the pilot holes drilled and ready to start disassembling and applying the bondo as a protective coat.

Actually... i thought about doing a door on it, but I don't have any concerns like that.

The TG collection isn't really that hard to complete other than Magical Chase.  The rest aren't super rare and you can grab them online in many places.  Don't even bother trying to get Magical Chase.  Only an idiot would pay the price for that one.

Yeah... some of them are still a bit expensive, but honestly. I don't think I will ever own Magical Chase... I can still play it on my Everdrive so I guess that's what counts.

It's taking me a while to do this build with what little time I've had recently... But here is a quick update.

I have yet to order the marquee, and now I'm just starting on the LED work. I ran into a problem where the cord on my AC adapter is too short so I have to head over to Fry's and pick up some more material.

This is a cool project. Nice to see something other than cabinets some times. I myself has long been wondering how to make a Mario coat stand. Something similar to this: http://www.skandium.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/skandium/1422.jpg (http://www.skandium.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/skandium/1422.jpg)

I've been wanting to make a coat hanger out of VCS joysticks.

I got the lighting installed today. Still have adjustments to attempt on top shelf and I have to hide the wires better. The next main thing is to order my Marquee.

How is that Mario-ish?

This is such a cool idea and a great way to collect and display your games. I like that you are collecting one system and not just getting a ton of random stuff. I'd love to do this type of thing some day.

Get that marquee ordered stat! It will take this over the top.  :applaud:

Great shelf idea!!  Love the T-molding edges and marquee.  I'd love to have a similar NES and SNES styled ones for my collection.  Brilliant idea.   :applaud:

Man... I finished that shelf back in November and I'm just now getting around to making the marquee. I have been putting it off because I was going to have it printed by GameOnGrafix, but I just could not justify the price they were asking. I emailed them since the size of the marquee was not anywhere near the smallest size they listed, so I was trying to see if they would reduce the cost any. I never did hear back from them... finally last night I decided to check prices locally on Plexiglass. I almost got it for free but the guy at Lowes  had trouble with the cutting rig they use and was not able to cut any of the scrap down. So I bought a $10 piece and printed the marquee on some nice paper at a local print shop. Brought everything home cut the Plexi down and sandwich mounted it together. End result... looks great.

I'm confused as well. I don't know if you're trolling, or you're asking if the TG-16 has Galaga available?  It does have a port of Galaga '88 (pretty awesome update to the classic formula, and the TG-16 version was a pretty faithful port of the arcade version), which was apparently re-titled Galaga '90 for the non-Japanese.

Maybe he is referring to the sign behind the shelf. Honestly... I just need to find a new place to put my Arcade sign since it now can't be seen. Only problem I have no where to put it where it will be facing the correct direction to my home arcade.

Oh interesting. The screen format was adapted to horizontal displays. Does it have options to rotate the screen to vertical? (Did any of the TG-16 shmups?)

This game did not have the option, but I believe it's Soldier Blade that has the option to play in full screen or vertical. I was actually quite shocked to see this the first time I played it.

This is old I know, but wondering if the OP is still around and could give a little more detail. You made the unit yourself I believe you said. Did you cut it, or have HD/Lowes do it? How is the marque held in? Do the shelf LEDs work, or are the ones above eye level blinding?

Thanks~
