I'm thinking of repainting my cab....what is the best type of sander I should use? Ie. Palm sander?
-
random orbital sander. Prices range from $29.99 to $159.99 on amazon.com

Ok thanks. Any recommendations for a decent one that will capture dust nicely? I don't want sawdust or old paint residue all over the place.

I didn't find mine, but I can look tomorrow. It had a little canvas sack. Or, I bet you could connect it to a vacuum system. YMMV. I'll updated this post when I find my sander.

I have a DeWalt orbital sander. It's been fantastic so far at keeping dust to a minimum.

I've only bought one. It is working well. Haven't bought another to compare. YMMV

Most orbital sanders have holes that allow the majority of dust to move through the piping system and into either a compartment or a vacuum hose. It's a huge plus if you want to keep dust to a minimum versus a mouse sander or belt sander.
I have a Bosch orbital sander with a removable compartment that I attach the vacuum hose to. Works fantastic.

I have a dewalt and I do the exact same thing. If you dont hook up a vacuum or shop vac to where the dust bag attaches, the primary thing to remember is to clean that bag out after every use, no matter how brief.

Thanks guys! So assuming I don't use a vacuum would there be much dust from using the built in bag? Reason why I ask is because the cab is on the main floor and if there's going to be lots of dust I'll be in trouble >:D

Not much. I mostly use mine with just the bag and there is very little dust output.

You don't want to sand fresh putty with a vacuum setup, The dust will harden in your vacuum and turn it to junk... A long flat bar Is nice for keeping things flat and strait in the early stages of cab repair.
