So I am helping my uncle build a control panel for a mame cab. We wired it up and I spent a day learning Hyperspin. I had done a bunch of classic games like pacman and tempest and everything worked fine. I recently decided to put contra in the cab and noticed I couldn't shoot diagonally. I opened up the config to make sure I had set that up but I noticed that the joysticks couldn't hit both gates...at least not easily.
My uncle got the stuff from a pack off ebay, I think it is all simple happ stuff. Without having to buy a new joystick is there any simple way to get the joystick to hit both gates? I read somewhere that I can bend the gates a bit but I was afraid of doing that and wanted to ask first.

What size hole did you drill in the CP ? -- Sounds like they might be smaller than needed - Sometimes if it is a bit small the handle will hit the side of the CP instead of being able to hit both activators enough to do the diagonals well - so if you made the joystick holes fairly small you might check and see if it is hitting the CP side and if so maybe cut the hole a bit larger.
Also depends on the Joystick whether it can be adjusted (ie. the leaf type can be adjusted fairly easily while some others are harder to adjust.)

Do you have any pics of the joystick? (Especially from underneath.)
If it's a Happ Super joystick, try disassembling it and flipping the actuator over, so that the smaller side is touching the switches.
If it's a Zippy or Sanwa, the restrictor plate is set to 4-way instead of 8-way.
Just keep in mind that if you set it to 8-way, any 4-way games (especially Pacman) will probably not work as well.
