While looking at ROM versions, I've noticed a there are a lot of "Phoenix Edition" labels. I've seen references to "Phoenix Edition" in some forum posts as well. What the heck are they and how are they different?
-
My understanding is it is a blackmarket mod to specific to cps2 games. I think people used it to tweak the games, and fix the suicide battery issue at the same time. I don't know any better details on it than that.
There are also other bootleg editions of PCBs that are labeled with names as well. I think I have a street fighter 2 Rainbow edition (or maybe red wave) lying around. Changes the game around so that projectiles are homing, and I can change characters midway through a match. Weird stuff.

the roms are decrypted. When CPS2 board's batteries suicide the ROMs are fudged and cant be decrypted anymore. Phoenixed editions have the roms decrypted so that it doesnt matter if the battery dies.
This is the layman explanation.

Got it. So the Phoenix Editions have no effect on game play; the only real difference would be if I was using the ROM to re-burn ROMs for a board repair?
I know about versions like Street Fighter Rainbow - practically the only reason that Capcom finally released updated versions!
-
I always thought there were tweaked, or some sort of additional "dip switch" menu added to them. I am pretty sure they are at least modified to say Phonex Edition in the title screen.

Other than rom decryption and it saying "Phoenix Edition" I'm not aware of any other changes

First thing that came to mind:

Yarp, to "fix" the suicide batteries. Need to do that to a AD&D board here soon. :(

So you CAN use MAME ROM's to burn new chips for PCB's? I was just kind of shooting in the dark on that one. If you do that, please document so I can see the process!

You just burn a new eeprom
