Title: Neotec 2701 or NT-27ER? Help with pincushion
Post by: rd3i on September 10, 2014, 09:09:55 pm
Hi everyone! First time arcade owner - Gauntlet Legends. The machine is playable and needs some TLC (to be expected). This forum has been incredibly invaluable so far and I want to thank everyone for their knowledge and patience. You guys rule!

The picture quality is pretty decent - especially after I adjusted the screen control (brightness) on the flyback. (the bottom knob) Despite the improvements, I think a re-cap is in my future. But before I go down that path, I'm trying to get a better understanding of which monitor I have and how it can be adjusted.

The neck board still has the cardboard attached and says it's a Neotec NT-2701. However, there's another sticker on the chassis that says NT-27ER. So, I'm not 100% sure which model I have. Although I see "Li Chin" on one of the boards so that might help narrow it down?

The main problem I have is with pincushion control. Depending on the exact model, I either should have a pincushion board and/or pincushion pot on the remote control board. And this is where the online manuals for the 2701 and 27E are confusing. Both manuals say, in section 5.6, that I can "Adjust VR1 (Pin-Ad) to modify the left-right side pincushion distortion". The part diagram for the small board (sorry, don't know it's name - but it's not the neck or main board. it sits vertically on the right of the main board when looking at the monitor from the rear) says that the silk-screened label for VR1 is "DPC". Instead of a pot being in that location, there's a red and orange wire that go to the remote control board. My remote control board does not have a pot in the "PIN CUSH" location but there is one for "DPC"! However, turning it doesn't appear to do anything...

I have also read that there's a bipolar capacitor on the small board that is responsible for pincushion and replacing it could fix the issue. All that said, my questions are:

- Should there be pincushion adjustment for my monitor, and is it the DPC knob on the remote control board?
- Should my model of monitor have a pot on the "PIN CUSH" location of the remote control board?
- Where is this magical bipolar cap? Would it be included in a cap kit from The Real Bob R? (I assume so, but want to verify)

Thanks!

Welp, after 6 years of the game sitting in a corner and life getting in the way, I finally ordered my cap kit. Swapped the caps and then nothing on the monitor. So basically a step backwards. After some probing with a multimeter, I found that diode D106 was short. Ordering some new diodes and will go from there.

LMAO! Had you a HUGE reply written, but the system logged me out, and it was all lost. Darn.

To sum up:
- I have the same cabinet as you with the exact same monitor chassis, identified as a 2701 and 27E on the chassis.
- Mine, like yours, has no pincushion control on the remote board, but the DPC (Dynamic Pin Cushion) pot is on the little pcb to the right on the chassis (when facing the back of the cabinet).
- You need to find the 5.6 Uf BP cap on that little pcb and replace it with a high frequency/high temp cap to restore the pincushion control via the little DPC pot.
- Here is a link to the thread 11 years ago I had going talking about this chassis and the repairs I was making: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=96483.0

Good luck man!
