I had changed the default keys in mame and now it's all gone! i was reading mame gets confused when you unplug some usb controllers.
Could I save the default.cfg file first if i'm going to unplug anything and then copy it back in when I am done?
I can't believe I have to do all that work again....I add the x arcade and 4 controllers to the mapping

i had the file backed up from a month ago...so far so good it worked...don't know what happens if i want to add light guns though....if i plugged in 2 light guns will i lose all my settings?

I have never had controls disappear from adding the light guns, but if you unplug one and plug it back in, windows will reassign both guns to different id's so the guns usually won't work. There is a program here that will fix that, but it escapes me at the moment.
And for the mame config file, I found that opening it, even if you don't edit it or save it, resets all your controls to "stock". not sure why but just don't touch the mame cfg file and it shouldn't be a problem.

if you set your default.cfg file or any .cfg file to read only, then mame wont make any changes to it anymore (so perhaps make all the changes you wish with your config setup, then set your default.cfg to read only so mame no longer makes changes if you unplug/plug in new devices). also i think i read in the past about people using ctrlr files to overcome the problem you encountered (see the mame ctrlr folder in your main mame folder)
you can see some of the comments about this issue at the bottom of this link below:

not sure if anyone said this yet, but i had this problem too. I believe you can unplug controllers as long as you do not run Mame.... once you run mame with controllers unplugged, it sets default controls because it can't find your controllers.

I've had it happen to me. Its frustrating because all that time remapping keys in specific games can take some time and effort. Now that i know this can happen, I make sure to never tweak with the cab.
