ed12, I found this post to be incredibly insensitive and offensive. Not only did you assume that Saint was not monitoring the site because he was in grief you then placed his (alluded) grief on a level below that of your own reading comfort.
I am frankly welling with disgust.

I'm open to suggestions on spammers. I manually approve every account, usually discarding anywhere from 30-75% of the signups depending on the day (no joke) as spam accounts.
I don't want to publicly reveal all the traits I identify as spam lest someone get around them, but they include obviously bogus accounts, .ru email addresses, etc. We have a captcha system and a "trick" question as well. They still get through, but it could be a lot lot worse. However, I'm always open to good suggestions on how to combat spam.
Thanks

but with saint's reply,i c that he is doing his best..
so with scott at the level now and just about everyone fed up with spam bot's

Meh. You're doing fine as is. I'd rather have an easy route for new members to join than a totally spam free model with a fee structure or some captcha for every post deal.

Subscribe to these websites to stop spam:
http://www.stopforumspam.com/ (http://www.stopforumspam.com/)
http://botscout.com/ (http://botscout.com/)
Chances are new usernames of spammers are already in those databases so they can be automatically rejected from being approved here. And if by chance a spammer is not in their database, you can report it to them for inclusion on the list to help other forums prevent that spammer from signing up.
-
I actually do subscribe to botscout and have their API on the forum, but about 6 months ago it started letting spammers in in droves. That's when I went back to manual approvals. Will take a look at the other one, thanks Ken!

OK, added the other spam checker, and have set the forum to not require admin approval. Let's see how the rest of today and into tomorrow goes :)
-
+10 new post count admin authorise. For the x time. ;D

A few of the spammers were 'sleeper' accounts that had registered months ago, but had no activity until they were ready to spam blast here.
Perhaps our existing members list should be checked against the blacklist at stopforumspam to weed out any more sleeper accounts?

I dont hate the idea of the first 3 posts needing a captcha

Yeah that seems like the best option, but then again you would have to make some kind of note to the member letting them know that they don't have to do that forever. I know if I signed on to a new forum and thought I had to captcha each time I posted I would leave real quick.

agreed. I dont think adding a line of text like "This will go away after 3 posts" would be very difficult to add.

I don't seem to get a lot of spam on my moderated "Automated Projects" forum, so either another mod is beating me to the punch, or I have found the secret to spam free forums: Don't post a lot of traffic on the forum and the spammers wont bother with it. So maybe we should stop posting on all the forums?
Just kidding, but it does hurt my feelings that I don't get a lot of posts on AP. :'(

You should go harrass that Blip making guy into posting the how to on his Marquee. That's a kind of automation.
