Title: Fantasy Football league
Post by: Hoopz on August 21, 2014, 12:31:16 pm
I had been talking with another member here about putting a league together this year.  They hadn't played before and were interested in doing it.  I thought we could get a 10 team league together so they can play and we can enjoy the season.  Two of us are already committed.

Caveats:

For fun only.  Be competitive but don't be "that guy".
No fees.
Online draft via ESPN or NFL.com
Fun only so no BS.
No BS trades of Reche Caldwell and next year's 5th round pick for Manning (unless it's Eli).

I suggest straight ESPN standard league so no funky rules (no PPR, Dynasty, Keeper, 2 QB, IDP, bs, bs, bs)

Seriously, just for fun to intro a couple new people to FF.  Bragging rights is fine too.

Interest?  Maybe guys from Pick Em thread will be interested but I'm happy to have anyone join who'll play the entire season, get along and not cause drama.

You can count me in. I won't be that difficult of competition, as I haven't played FF in probably 10 years. I am picking it up again at work, so I could use the extra practice.

I'm in (along with my son) but I really want to be "that guy".  It is your fault Hoopz for pushing the show "The League" on me.

Thanks for doing this.

EDIT - just one spot.  My son and I will run the same team.

A strength potion wouldn't improve his success rate either. He is wearing the cursed jersey of choking, and it can only be removed with the Ring of Superbowl or the Cloak of Retirement. Unfortunately for the Realm of Texas, neither of those items will be obtained in the near future.

Its more widespread than just old bullies.  But that poster is funny.

Scott, interested?  We need the calm voice of reason.

Post by: PL1 on August 24, 2014, 02:19:24 am
Sorry, but I have no interest in sports unless someone I know personally is involved or I'm on the field myself.

IMHO being a hardcore sports fan is a socially acceptable form of mental illness.

I can appreciate the beauty of a well executed play, the teamwork, and the athletic skills involved, but anyone who thinks that "their" team will lose unless they wear the unwashed Lucky JerseyTM and shout encouragement at the TV screen in their house should seek professional help.

Pursuits like sports fandom and Fantasy Football don't need the calm voice of reason, they need passion.

Good luck and enjoy.

Well it isn't "their team" either.  Let's say you are a Cowboys fan.  Ok how many of the players are from Texas?  Yeah next to none... they'll be from all over North America and Samoa and they are paid to be there.  They can be traded at will and if someone offers them more money they have no qualms about leaving.  Oh and guess what?  In 4 to 8  years time 100% of the players you rooted for will no longer be on the team.  So how is it still the cowboys again?

So what exactly does this collection of hired hands have to do with Texas again?  Why are you rooting for them, because the conglomerate that owns the team did a good job purchasing them?  Isn't anyone else creeped out by the fact that the majority of players are minorities and they are bought and sold like a commodity?
Title: Re: Fantasy Football league
Post by: PL1 on August 24, 2014, 05:22:58 am
My "their" team comment wasn't aimed at the team, it was aimed at Joe Six-Pack mouthing off about "my team".

On one level "my team" could just be a common verbal shorthand for "the team I like to watch and root for" -- annoying, but not an indicator of mental illness.   :lol

On the other hand, if they are claiming some sort of affiliation with/membership in/influence over/ownership of the team despite not being an NFL franchise owner*, player, coach, on-field cheerleader (shouting from the stands doesn't count :P), or even the waterboy, then that is a sign of mental illness IMHO.

The Celtics used to be traded on the Amex but it was thinly traded and eventually stopped as it was a small ltd partnership.  The Florida Panthers were also traded but on NASDAQ with the ticker PUCK for awhile.

I'll simply disagree with your opinion.  With so many people playing fantasy sports and enjoying sports in general, it's bound to have bad apples.  To paint everyone with a broad swath isn't in line with what I've experienced.

Ok, we have the following:

Vigo
yotsuya
wp34's son (along with wp34)
ChadTower
yours truly
a buddy of mine from RL
his two brothers (one of which definitely hasn't played before and perhaps both)

If we don't get anymore commitments, we'll go with an 8 team league.  We'll be stacked and high scoring but that's fine.  Again, this really is just for fun, giving people a chance to play that may not have before, and a small measure of bragging rights.  Unless I hear back from someone that is truly passionate about the draft date, I was thinking about setting it for 9:00 PM on Sunday, August 31.  Eastern/NY time.  youtsuya, you're in AZ, correct?  Somewhat earlier in the evening for you.  Holler if that's not good and you don't want auto-draft.  At Chad's advancing age and since he's in MA, I thought we should do it before his bed time...

Since I've never played before I need to ask a few dumb questions.

If we autodraft will there be trades?  IE can I trade away Aaron Rodgers if I get stuck with him?

If there are no trades can I start a kicker in place of Aaron Rodgers if I get stuck with him?

If you get Aaron Rogers, I'll trade you a kicker for him.

I rode him all the way to a league title a few years back. Sometimes you gotta put rivalries assist. It's not personal, it's fantasy football. I've gotten stuck with Tony Romo twice, and I can't stand the  :censored:, but he puts up huge numbers. I joke that he treats me like Jessica Simpson:

He'll get me points and great numbers during the regular season, but inevitably, at the end of the season, he ends up ---smurfing--- me in the ass.

Vigo and wp34 are both 2-0
pbj, Zero_Hour, yotsuya and myself are all 1-1
And Chad is 0-1-1.  (Just like in Heartbreak Ridge!)

Nothing worse than a tie in FF.   ;D

But, my beloved Chicago Bears are doing well, right????   Dammit....

If it weren't for my Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State Sun Devils being a combined 10-2, I'd be done with football season.

Kinda like how Rodgers is currently the best QB in the league, AND he is dating Olivia Munn? Say what you will about her, but I am sure there is the reason why he became "Mr. Relax" this year.

Big dust up yesterday in the locker room...  But Marshall's right, there's no reason that offense only put up 14 points yesterday.

And you still beat me.  Nice.

I'll show you tomorrow when they unlock.  You essentially just click on the button that says "Move" that's next to the players name.  Select My team on the menu, then move the player from the bench to starting or vice versa.  Good thing to do around week 7 or so.

Bump to see if the guys still playing know that we've started the playoffs.

Playoffs started last week and the guys from BYOAC who made it were:

wp34 - #2 seed who played PBJ #7 seed - wp34 won

Vigo #3 seed played ChadTower #6 seed - Chad won

Hoopz #4 seed - won
Zero_Hour #8 seed - lost

Round 2 - wp34 plays Chad and I play a buddy from RL.

Thanks to the guys here who played (Yotsy, Vigo, Zero_Hour, PBJ, Chad, wp34).

So how did everyone do in leagues outside the forums?  I actually managed to win mine.  (Second career win.)

Guy had the top QB (Luck), the top 2 RBs (L. Bell and Murray), 3 good receivers (Dez, AJ, and M Evans who picked it up lately), the top TE (Gronk).  DEF and K were top 4 of each.  In a league where scoring 100 was about a 50% occurrence for everyone else, he was averaging 19 more than the second highest average, or 34 more than the league average not including him.

I won despite leaving for the Cincy Zoo's Festival of Lights at 3, and didn't know Hilton was out.  We kept joking near the end he's gonna pull a Patriots, his team will crap out, and lose the Super Bowl.  Didn't think it'd actually happen!  Prior to this, the lowest he ever scored was 111.

The first image was the final standings after the bowl.  The second is our game.
