Title: Question regarding same layout with multiple emulators.
Post by: mike boss on August 17, 2014, 07:12:13 pm
I think I have baby brain, because now that I'm a father all my attention is directed to my daughter.
Time to game, or get on the PC is limited.
I created the following layout for a customer.
I know that I can use the same layout for all emulators, OR have a different layout per emulator.
My question is this, is there an easy way to add an identifier to the one layout (emulator logo) without having to reconfigure everything ?

I know in my set up downstairs I use LEFT/RIGHT to switch between lists, and LEFT/RIGHT + PLAYER 1, BUTTON 1 to switch emulators.
The layout remains consistent. I was hoping that an easy way would exist where I could add a logo where the marquee is to identify the emulator.

(I hope I make sense)

Thank you all

Can't do.  Only thing Mala can do is display the emulator name or gamelist name (not an image)
The workaround is to either make a bunch of copies of the layout and add a different emulator logo to the background image of each one.

No simple way.  You could drop a marquee with the emulator label in the marquee directory and name it the same as a rom for that emulator, and then copy it and rename it for each game in that emulator, but that would probably be more work than just copying your layouts and renaming them and setting the default marquee graphic for each emulator to the logo.  Frankly though since you wouldn't be changing the background or the layout, it wouldn't take but a few minutes to do for each emulator, assuming you already had the logos sized for your marquee spot for each emulator.

Been a lil while since I played around with MaLa or modified my configuation.
Looking the other day I did notice that you could set up the individual emulators to display marquees.
I also know that you can set up a default marquee per emulator.
I wonder if that would work.

There's a way to find out.

LOL! .................I know, I know...............I gotta do the work.

I thought more about it. MaLa will let me set up one default marquee.....so I would need to set up a default marquee per emulator. IE - I have to create a layout per emulator. That is what I did not want to do.
I guess no shortcut exists !

If you can do one marquee per emulator and keep the same layout, that would be fastest, second fastest being copy the layout and setup a default marquee for each layout, third fastest (pretty time consuming) being copying the marquee and naming it for each rom based on the emulator.  If the first option is available, sounds pretty darn easy to me!  I didn't think you could do that, but I also haven't looked at the alternate emulator layouts yet, I have only either used one for everything or done a tree, which I really didn't like.  I suppose I could look at it too, but if you figure out a "quick and dirty" solution, let us know so I can copy it.

On the weekend I'm going to take a crack at this.
I think the easiest way to do this is simply take the layout, copy the folder and mll file, then rename to match the emulator.
If I'm not mistaken I could take the layout (named TEST for example) and copy the folder + mll, changing the name of the folder + mll to match my installed emulators. So the same folder, same mll, exact same contents then name it as needed.  Essentially renaming it as needed for Nintendo, SNES, N64, etc etc etc.
I would however have to go into the layout editor and select the default marquee for each layout. That really isn't much more time consuming than setting up the emulator settings in the MaLa set up.

That was what I was thinking, the longest part being making a marquee for each emulator logo.. the copying and renaming of the layouts would only take a few seconds and even going into each to change the default marquee would only take a minute or less for each.
