Title: Yotsuya's Digital Signage Scoreboard
Post by: yotsuya on August 12, 2014, 11:50:25 pm
First off, a shoutout to Knievel  and Slippyblade for requesting this post.

I have a few dedicated games in my gameroom, as well as a MAME cab or two, and like many, I wanted to find a way to use a dedicated scoreboard. I wanted something dynamic and electronic, since my first choice, a full-size Pepsi Messageboard with Letters is hard to find and expensive around these parts.

So I wanted to do a Plan B - something digital. I looked at a few suggestions on KLOV, but none of them spoke to me, man. Then, I got an idea based on some tinkering I had done at work... I would go ahead and do my own digital signage setup. You know, those information boards you see at hotels, airports, and everywhere else? I would create and design my own.

I went out and looked for freeware digital signage packages. Most of them required you to set up your own server and stuff like that, but one service hosted everything for you, for free. I used Risevision.com because you can create an account for free and you can tweak your setup anyway you like it. The basic stuff is free - you can pay more for extra doodads and plugin, but screw that! I just wanted to display a few photos and, more importantly, high scores. Below, you can see my basic design.

The main box, under high scores, is an area that loads and scrolls a Google Spreadsheet. I installed Chrome and Google Drive so I have access to the spreadsheet on my phone (more on that later). On the right, I have an area that scrolls cabinets and flyers that I host on Picasa, and under that is a spot that scrolls screenshots and arcade photos. Upper right is the time and date. You can make your layout as simple or as complicated as you want.

I had a spare 19 inch monitor that I had lying around, so I ended up buying a monitor mount arm for it. I also purchased a flush monitor mount, because I wanted to mount the controller right next to it. I got a dirt-cheap Dell OptiPlex 160 on eBay for like $40 or so. The ONLY thing this unit would be for is controlling the scoreboard, so it didn't need a lot of processing power. I set up the machine to run Windows 7, and once it was ready, I linked it to the digital signage account, so any signage I made or changes or updates would automatically be pushed out to it. I bought a cheap USB Wi-Fi connector for it, because I wanted all updates to be sent wirelessly.

I installed the monitor on the wall with no issues, and used the flush mount to put the PC directly behind it.

When you push the monitor into position, it effectively hides the computer.

So all I do is push the powerbutton on the OptiPlex. The machine automatically boots into Windows 7, then right into Chrome and the Digital Signage software. The Google Doc loads and the scores scroll up. I can open the spreadsheet on either my phone or my PC and make changes to the high scores if need be. It saves it and refreshes dynamically, so the new score shows up pretty much instantly. I can upload photos to my Picasa and they'll show up after the RSS feed refreshes. Also, there's a red scrolling ticker at the bottom I use for fun messages, but I bet you could stick sports scores or something else there.

Well, there's my scoreboard. It's pretty much exactly what I envisioned for it when I decided I wanted a digital one. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Impressive. Maybe you could make the document public and have a little high score challenge among the forum members. :)

That's not a bad idea. If anyone else builds one of these, we'll do a BYOAC Scoreboard Network!

Well, I had a ton of spare desktops that are obsolete for almost anything else and LCDs anyways. I might as well.

Right after I posted that, I went ahead and tweaked the scoreboard to list local scores and BYOAC Scoreboard Network Scores. So we'll see!

Heck, maybe this'll be a sticky for the official scoreboard someday. Then y'all can see how horrible I am at arcade games!

Do you know the claim ID? With that, other people can access the form and see the scoreboard. You might also have to do something with the google document containing the actual scores too to make other people edit what's on it

I'll open it up in a few weeks. If people are interested in sharing scores via a Google Spreadsheet, let me know.

Awesome idea, thanks for sharing it. Just what I was looking for.
Heading to the lake for a few days but I'll tackle it this weekend.

Everything on the digital signage end looks easy enough thanks to your explanation. Did you start with a specific template to do your setup?

Also could explain the Google spreadsheet more, or possibly share yours? I have no idea what that is.

Thanks!

Thanks, guys! Glad to finally share it.

Here's a link to a BYOAC Scoreboard Network spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1X9AmOYta-NiB2VhOOsxpAJd1ZVi5ohflTMpU7IcbYZk/edit#gid=0

Any of you all can edit it. Add games, change scores. You're all on the honor system.

I'll integrate it into my setup.

To answer the template question, I started with a built-in one to learn how it works, then I did my own from scratch. If you go the scratch route, you just need to play with it to get a feel for what works. I just keep it to one screen, but you can actually make multiple screens that it transitions to, almost like a super-fancy PowerPoint. I thought about doing one page of scores, one of photos, one of game trivia, etc but in the end I decided to keep it simple. You can make it as simple or as complex as you want.

I'll shoot a video and post it tonight so you can see how it looks.

All I know is that PSC is dominating!
Title: Re: Yotsuya's Digital Signage Scoreboard
Post by: yotsuya on August 13, 2014, 12:09:44 pm
On the spreadsheet I posted, you see three columns:

First is game name, second is score, third is initials. It shows up exactly like that on the signage, so there are no column headers. You can simply change a score or initial or add a game, and it automatically saves it. The scoreboard, once refreshed, shows the new scores.

BTW, what's cool is that you can add more than one computer to the setup. So if you had 2 or 3 TVs and PCs in your game room, you could send the same content to each, or you could have one running a scoreboard, the other running flyers, etc. It's really versatile.

All I know is that PSC is dominating!

I bet that dude's  a ---smurfing--- cheater.  :P

Yes, it scrolls. Once it gets to the end of the sheet, it loops back over and over again.

Thanks, LC.

If anyone is interested in trying this, feel free to shoot me a PM if you need help. You can also use widescreen monitors - I just happened to have a space 4:3 lying around. You can customize the layout to fit your size.

As far as the photos go, I have a folder on my desktop called "Arcade Pics". In that are two folders "Cabinets" and "Screenshots". If I want to add photos to the layout, I just drag them in there and open Picasa. It scans the folders at startup and uploads new photos to the web. The RSS feed gets updated, and they show up on my screen.

Word.

Just insert that googly spreadsheet into that rise app.  Just know that rise makes it clear they intend to charge for this in the future.

I can only hope if this trends well, the FE devs will add similar functionality.

I wouldn't recommend installing it on your MAME cab. It adds a lot of overhead and if you have an old system, it will affect performance.

What we need is a FE plugin that will read the Google Spreadsheet.

Is the matter of the bronze joystick trophy point scoring settled?  It would be cool to have a window for that too.  I'm not in contention, but it would fit in with the theme of the shared scoreboard.

I went in and took out the extra scores where mine were lower than the BYOAC High Score winners so a game is only listed once. I also put it in alphabetical order on the sheet to make it easier to find games.

Remember, this is all honor system, so feel free to add your own scores if they are higher than what's listed. We're all grown ups, here.

This program is meant to run independently, in a corner, looking like a digital sign.  So far, I think its fantastic at what it does.  However, if you put this on your main desktop like I did, it will close chrome when you least expect it.

Even if you turn everything off on the web interface, it will still launch a window.

but if you take the player out of the start up folder, the launching seems to stop.

i tinkered with this on home pc....

All it does is scroll for a few seconds then disappear, reset and repeat.....

 :banghead:

You're doing it wrong, bro.

You CAN set it up to do multiple pages. I'm thinking of having one page with my local high scores, then it switching to the BYOAC scores after a minute. Rinse and repeat.

Oh thank you for telling me i'm doing it wrong Einstein.....this i know

How bout you post a small tutorial on what you did right...... :hissy:

like screen shots of your settings, how to get the player going etc.....purty please.

I don't have any Mike Boss style graphics on mine, but after working on it for about 2 hours I got it going.  There is a short video that intentionally ignored for over an hour.

Aside from having conficting "devices" the biggest hold up for me was I tried to use the chrome app.

Eventually, I'd like to tweek it more with a more Pac Man ish background.  Or cycle through different Pac Man pics.

I recommend you change the refresh immediately, to a higher #, it makes the template easier to work with.

Your issue is the data refresh, its set for 5 sec by default....

Change that field to a high number like Eric and it will work.

Mine is set for 10 seconds, and I don't have that issue.

The only time I see an issue like that is if I am previewing a screen. If I'm running the screen on an actual client, I have no issue.  :dunno

I think we can hash this out!

I thought the data refresh was the amount in seconds that it polled the googly spreadsheet.

What is everyones "scroll by" setting?

Are you guys sending the scoreboard to a remote client, or are you running it on your primary machine? Just wondering. I send mine to a client, and it runs just fine. If I do the in-browser preview on my main computer, it only scrolls for 5 secs or so.
Title: Re: Yotsuya's Digital Signage Scoreboard
Post by: rablack97 on August 17, 2014, 09:48:06 pm
Primary machine here, I have mine set to 6000 and it fixed the scroll problem.  Primary machines require a longer refresh rate......

Not sure how you do the client thing....

Also not sure if any of you know this, but if you add the headers to the file.  The headers become interactive by way of sort.  You can sort by any column, if you place your mouse over the column name it hightlights and then when you click it sorts ascending and descending.

Log into your RiseVision account on the client machine, go to Displays, and click on [Download Player]. Install the Player software on your client, then follow the directions for registering the client as a part of your network. The network ID and Claim ID are under your "Company" settings. Once you do that, you can send the info out to your stand-alone player(s).

Thanks for the bump on this thread. I am setting this up for my little arcade right now. Thanks to Yots and the others who did the leg work on this.

I set up my digital signage account. I created my first google spreadsheet, and figured out how to add pictures and titles. Later I will add a snazzy background.
I have a widescreen LCD that will do nicely to display the scores in my arcade.

I just picked up 2 more games so this will be better than a dry erase board.

Thanks.

I am not very crafty when it comes to online stuff and coding. They have a youtube widget but it costs money.

I downloaded the videos from youtube.
I tried sharing them from my Google Drive account. It didn't like that.
I ended up using a trial of Risevision's  online storage. It works easily from there.

I was going to ask if anyone knew a way to stream these from youtube without using their widget.
There is an HTML widget, but like I said that is outside my expertise.

The Rise Vision system works on my cheap Chinese Android tablet.

I am just going to sticky tape the tablet to the back of a TV I have laying around. The tablet has an HDMI out. I will have to see if I can find a wireless keyboard that will work with the tablet. The app can be set to start on boot, but accessing it will be difficult when it is strapped to the back of the television. Maybe I will just run the HDMI cable with the power cable to a spot where the tablet can be accessed. :dunno

Yotsuya sent me a large collection of 80's videos.

I am not sure how to put in to words how much this means to me. The first date I went on with my wife was a dinner and a movie. I must have made a good impression because she invited me to a bar afterwards. She was super hot so I was feeling pretty good. Little did I know that they do karaoke there. That is not my thing at all. I am a terrible singer, I was a total metal head, and I was a pretty reserved guy. We got drunk, sang a bunch of 80's songs, and we got married a couple years later.

Yots,

I cried like a baby looking through these videos. Every song we sang is in this collection. I also laughed a lot. Thank you so much. The company that hosted the karaoke gave us a video tape of the night, but it was destroyed in a flood many years ago. I didn't really care that much at the time, but I would give anything to have that tape now.

It says they don't support the Pi anymore. I think some people in the Rise Vision forums have it working. It works like butter on my 60 dollar Android tablet. I ran an HDMI cable from the monitor to my tablet that sits in a cabinet. If the tablet becomes too cumbersome I will buy an Android stick.

I just was looking at this, and found that they now have a link:

It's yrev very good to see this again.

Glad the Drive make it ok! Enjoy the videos and the memories. Make some new ones with your budding collection.
