Title: NFL Last Man Standing Pick 'Em 2014
Post by: Hoopz on August 12, 2014, 12:21:36 pm
I ran this the last few years and Chad ran it the first few years.  I was going to post it later in August, but I'm bored at work today and may not have time next week to do it.

Rules are simple.  Choose one game each week.  Pick the winner.  If you are wrong you are eliminated from the game.  Last man standing wins.  I will keep track of everyone's picks each week and display them by editing this post.

When making a pick, highlight it in the post, so that they're easier to pick out.  I don't want to miss anyone's pick.  If you don't know how to highlight it, copy somebody else's pick and change the color name if you want.

A pick must be made every week.  Failure to make a pick results in elimination.   Picks should be posted in this thread so that people have the ability to double check my work.

You cannot pick a game with the same team two weeks in a row.  If you pick the Rams over the Titans in week 2, you cannot use either the Rams game or the Titans game in week 3.  Having everyone help with this will eliminate the possibility of a mistake on my end on this item.  You can pick a team multiple times over the season.

Entrant pool closes an hour preceding the game you want to pick.  That means that if you want to pick Thursday's game this week you must do so at least an hour before the game starts.  Forum timestamps will be binding.

Good luck to all.  As always my goal is to make it out of Week 1 this year.  And the winner does receive forum rep points.

Can I put $10 on the Cowboys and Texans to lose every one of their games this year?  Going to be a long season in Texas this year, while I flip to Cleveland games and mourn what could have been.

I'll take that for $10.   ;D

At least the Cowboys will put up a lot of points since they have a good offense and will get the back so quickly since their defense is awful.  And Cleveland won't be good.

I nominate this for biggest NFL boner of the year award:

"Texans owner Bob McNair knew what he would get if his team had drafted Johnny Manziel.

"I knew with Manziel it would be a frenzy," McNair told ESPN.com. "And probably even if he didn't succeed at being an outstanding NFL quarterback for a couple years, the fans would have been frenzied.""

Here's to another 2 win season!  I'm sure you'll sell a lot of tickets!!

Runner up is the Cowboys throwing in their lot with Kyle Orton, who they now get to pay for doing nothing!   ;D

Won't happen.  Romo is the Bane of QBs.  He always offers just enough hope that this time it will be different.  This time it will be 11-5 and an NFC title game loss to SF.  Then he Romos and everybody in Dallas remembers.

Unless some miracle happens, I dont see the cowboys breaking an 8 win season , my uneducated guess is 7-9 tops (with 5-11 being more likely).  Which might be good enough to make the play offs in the NFC LEast.

Their defense is terrible and if Romo's back isn't 100% after the surgery, they're toast. Even if his back is good, they can't stop anyone.  5 or 6 wins max.  They'll put up a crap ton of points though since their defense will be raped all season.

The Cowboys will finish 8-8 AGAIN, lose the NFC East on the last game of the season, and Jerry will give Garrett a 5 year extension.

There's this weird sentiment going around lately about how Romo's got great fourth quarter stats.  Putting aside that bloggers are making that argument are doing it primarily for the comment outrage and ad clicks, I think they're missing the point.  Nobody ever argued the guy couldn't make plays, he just chokes on the key play where we need him.  Consistently.  For a decade.

The QB always has great stats in the fourth quarter on a losing team.  They spend the whole fourth quarter throwing the ball around to catch up.  That's how a guy like Romo ends up with all those 300 yard games.  If the Cowboys were better he would be working the clock instead of the sidelines.

Dude, after watching the Pats-Dolphins game, you might want to rethink this one.  The Pats' OL is absolutely horrible.  They can't protect Brady and they can't open a lane.

Being a Cowboys fan has ceased to bring me any pleasure or joy.  I get that all sports fans are masochists on some level - it's impossible for your team to win more often than they lose in the long run.  But the consistently poor long term decision making that plagues the organization just makes it excruciating.  I also have no doubt that it's an extraordinarily dangerous sport but am speechless in the face of all the new penalties and automatic first downs this year.  When the commentators are noting the presence or lack of a flag on -every- -single- -play- it's long out of hand.

Last year, I watched them just so I'd have something to talk about with my dad.  This year that's less of a priority so I'm at a loss for why I bother.

For being such an established and well known team, a lot of the front office decisions the Cowboys have done, have baffled me. Head coaching choices, draft choices, and lots and lots of signing/resigning decisions. I thought they were quite lucky to even be an 8 and 8 team.  I'm mostly watching football to see if I can win this thread again, and to give me something to do till hockey starts up. Not that Id want to watch the game, but SD vs ARI starts at 1030pm on a Monday night. Guess that's payback to the east coast for getting to sleep in and watch early Sunday games at 1pm instead of 10am.

Um...I know it's been awhile, but the Cowboys have won like 5 superbowls.

Try being a Vikings fan..O for 4 in Superbowls.   They haven't even BEEN to a Superbowl since 1977 (I was 7).  Add all the NUMEROUS historic meltdowns in NFC championship games; Losing in OT in 1998 NFC Champ game while going 15-1 in reg season..kicker missed field goal to ice game in 4th qtr after not missing ANY fgs in reg season, losing 41-0 against the Giants another NFC Championship game,  losing in OT to the Saints in 2010 NFC Champ game. (infamous Bounty game against Favre)

Not to mention, the Vikings organization is a MAJOR reason why the Cowboys won a 3 Superbowls in the 90s.  Hershel Walker trade? :banghead:

I just checked on their opponents and was surprised to notice they haven't beaten one team that currently has a winning record.  They have only played one team that has a winning record (SF 4-3) and lost.  They are on a run against every team from last year that is surprisingly worse than they should be.

The fortunate part for them is that now they have the actually weak teams.  We're going to see if this team is for real in two weeks against Arizona (who is on a similar run against the dregs of the NFC).

Been there.

It is funny how anticlimactic the whole thing is, especially when they flash to the studio commentary. One British dude and a random ex-NFL player politely having a chipper discussion about different aspects of the game. It hits climax when they open up the mail bag and comment on various fan letters that they receive.

That was a splendid match between the Cowboys of Arlington and the Cardinals of Arizona. One query, though? Do you forsee Master Romo being out due to ill health for an extended length of time? If so, is there anyone besides Master Weedon in the queue? Well, off to the jacks! Cherrio!"

Pretty darn close.  "Honey, come watch this, I'm not sure these guys know anything about football."  But, hey, if you buy a rebadged GM you get 500 pounds of petrol.

Started off with a Massachusetts FOX feed, which was even worse.  The only thing less interesting that local political commercials are political commercials from another locality.  Vote no on Question 4, though.

Hey All,

What a ride! I can not believe I won for a second time... Mostly thanks to Hoopz... I actually forgot to pick until he PM'ed me to remind me.... This came at the perfect time for me... I was watching the game with my oldest this morning (Monday) on my Birthday!

I am excited about continuing on in round 2 (I'll make my pick later this week after I sober up and finish watching my games this week).

Congrats and happy B-day!  :applaud:

Things are gonna get harder during the playoffs, so if round 2 runs a bit long, I think we will still be safe, especially if we tighten up the rules in the end.

And because I am gonna be partying for this game: Pack over Vikes

ROUND 2 is ON!

Malenko - post your damn pick and get in the game.  You know you want to.

We'll leave the rules the same and let you pick any team.  Picking favorites isn't a sure thing.  If we get into the playoffs and have to make games there, that'll be fun and interesting.  We haven't had that happen yet.

Happy Birthday MA and congrats on the W (and crushing my spirit).   :applaud:

Vigo is disqualified for not following the rules.  Picks have to be highlighted not in different font colors.  Typical anarchy that we expect from a GB fan.   >:D

They've had a helluva couple games in a row though.  My beloved Bears beat down doesn't look as bad since the Iggles got pounded also.

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but it used to be more a lot more prevalent.  It doesn't happen in the primary market for either team but if your getting a "national" game and it's a blowout, they'll move you to a closer (score-wise) game.  It tends not to happen in secondary markets as much but it'll never happen in a primary market.

Cards won't do well with Stanton at QB.  Though I do like Bruce Arians.  Big fan of him when he was here in Indy.  And I'd say the team from Wisconsin is the odds on favorite to win the NFC.  Especially if they get home field during playoffs.

Bump for anyone who still wants in for Round 2.

You can say their name. The Packers are not Voldemort. Well, Peppers might be still imbued with the unholy demon blood the Bears infuse into their players with to turn them into raging behemoths.

Hey, if Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson can possess Super Bowl rings, so can Drew Stanton. He just has to be a game manager and let the D keep it close.

Though I don't disagree with your assessment of GB. If the Cards don't win it, I'd be pulling for them over anyone else.

I'm riding the Andre Ellington horse in a couple leagues so I'll be thrilled if they run the table and run the ball well.  And Dilfer and Johnson were starters all year not a backup having to come (back) in to do it.  I hope he does well.

And I'm not rooting for Satan's offspring to win it.  With my luck, I'm confident that they'll do well though.

And Vigo - Peppers played like crap all of last year so to see him doing well, on that team, is just painful.  About as bad as having that jackass that we both hated when he played for the Viqueens come to Chicago and be a Bear.

At least Peppers wasn't a hometown hero.  Hired gun from Panthers.  Granted, Farve (correct spelling) came from Atlanta but he was a scrub there.

But that pain of seeing him leave is replaced by the new guy playing QB for that team.   ::)

Yeah, I have been savoring Greg Jennings failure as a viking. It's different than the Favrvrve drama (which was much easier when the fans realized we were better off with Rodgers). I think Bears fans understand that player loyalty separation more than other teams due to their legacy.

Going back to your Jared Allen comment, yeah that has to be a bit cutting to see him as the face of the 2014 Bears. I didn't give that much thought until you mentioned it.

Face of the 14 Bears is spot on.  Jackass that should never be on the team and is the reason for the epic failure.

Personally, I think the Bears are much more talented than their record shows. As much as I joke that they need to replace Jay Cutler, the bears have it good in the QB arena compared to a lot of teams like vikes. My 2 cents is Trestman needs to figure out how they are gonna play the game and focus on bringing in that breed of talent. Seems to me like a lack of identity.

Def, especially the DBs, have been decimated by injuries.  They weren't going to be good to begin with but that's not helped.  Briggs is slow and old. He won't be back.  Losing Tillman again for the season with injuries doesn't help.  When your longest tenured LB says that they have guys IN GAMES that nobody knows their names, that's not a recipe to win v. GB....

Offense is a conundrum.  Too much talent to lose to Buf, Miami, etc.

I've never seen a potential 9-7 (well 10-6, they play Washington week 17)season be so celebrated.  I mean I know its the first time in FIVE years they hit 9 wins, but come on.

9 wins:
Ten 2-10  StL 5-7 NO 5-7 Hou 6-6 Sea 8-4
NYG 3-9 Jax  2-10 NYG 3-9 CHI 5-8

so 1 win against a team with a winning record, and the combined record for the teams they beat is 39-70.

Worst part about football is  the fans.   It was a pretty good game to watch. I only lasted till the end of the 3rd quarter when the Eagles backup quarterback, and Im using the term quarterback very loosely here, tossed an interception. Then I went to bed. 830pm starts to 3-4 hour games aren't made for people who live on the east coast and get up at 530am. Hockey games starting at 9pm are worse.

Neither the Eagles nor the Cowboys will win the superbowl this year, of course doesnt look like the Flyers are going to win the cup either :/

I cant DVR a football game, its too likely the game results would be spoiled for me before I could watch it. I just watch what I can and look at the results the next day.  It has to be weird in California to start watching Sunday Pro football at 10am and have the last game over by 9pm.

So by default, I win.

Kidding. They should all pick again. Since its the last week before playoffs, maybe all pick the game game of Hoopz's choosing and the final score, hoopz decides the victor?  Or just let em pick as normal and hope it gets done by the Superbowl?

Ive barely watched any football this year, will probably watch even less next year.

Ive barely watched any football this year, will probably watch even less next year.

It's the sharp knees isn't it? Well below your standards.

Every time a player makes a tackle or break up a pass they dance . Every time someone gets a first down they do the "first down" arm thing. Every time a wide receiver doesn't catch a pass they want a flag for pass interference. Every time a receiver catches a pass the defender wants a flag for offensive pass interference. If a guy gets a sack he celebrates even if down by 30 points, if a guy doesn't get a sack he wants a penalty for holding. Tackling or hitting hard is a 15 yard penalty. hitting a receiver while he's catching the ball is a penalty. Everything is a penalty.

Its just not fun to watch anymore.

Even if all that magically got fixed over night, I still wouldn't watch Monday Night Football for 1 reason : John Gruden. So I think I get to take a 7yr break from MNF because thats how long his contract is.  They keep trying to sell him as the next football genius. All he did was make a slightly below average raider's team and make them slightly above average. Next up he took a team built to win by Tony Dungy to a super bowl win and drove them into the ground right after with a combined 12-20 record over the next 2 years.  His career coaching record is just a ball hair over 500 , maddens is like 760

EDIT: I do occasionally watch college football, but both Delaware colleges are division 2, so I dont really have a dog in that fight either and could care less who wins the "first college play off"

Mute the announcers.  Problem solved.

sometimes, they (other than Gruden) are helpful. Also, I dont have a way to mute just them, watching football with no sound is just weird.

I remember turning this game on and wondering why the sound on that channel wouldn't work:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/otl/news/story?id=5906858 (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/otl/news/story?id=5906858)

When it comes down to listening to awful announcers or watching the game in silence, I go with silence.

There are apps out there that let you simulcast a feed while you mute the TV.  My dad's irrational hatred of Phil Simms spurred the location of those programs.  Chris Collinsworth has always bugged me but he's a Cowboys fan this year so he's bearable.

Having rode Dez for the third time to three straight championships in one league, I can say that I'm a huge Cowboys fan too.  Romo may not have many December wins but he always puts up points during those games.

Pittsburgh over Baltimore
Indianapolis over Cincinnati

Divisional
Seattle over Arizona
Green Bay over Dallas
Denver over Pittsburgh
New England over Indianapolis

I hate Pete Carroll, so I don't want to see Seattle win again. I hate Cowboy fans (except PBJ), so I don't want to see them even sniff the SB, since it's here, and the last thing we need in AZ is a bunch of uppity unwashed Cowboy fans flooding the Valley. Other than that, I'm good with anyone else in the NFC, and I don't care about the AFC.

Divisional
Seattle over Arizona

Denver over Pittsburgh

Super Bowl
Romo and Dez win it all.

Not a Dallas fan but Romo, Dez and Murray are playing as well as the big 3 did for Dallas years ago.  Dallas over Seattle again is a stretch but I think they can.  As long as Dallas pummels the Lions and the Packers don't win (Sorry Vigo), I'm fine.  Cards pulling out a miracle with whatever QB they have would be nice but they have zero shot.  Manning can't put back to back games together at this point so they don't have a shot.  I'm not convinced that the Patriots are as good as their record but who knows.

Seriously, I hope the Lions never win another game in the history of that franchise.

And quite honestly, my AZ over CAR pick is a heart pick, not a head pick. Realistically, they can't win with Lindley as their QB.

LMAO!  As a Cards fan, I'm sure your feelings towards the Cowboys are the same as mine towards the Lions/Packers/Vikings.  Watching Detroit fail again is perfect for me.  Sorry it had to come at the expense of the Cowboys.  But I need them to win again next week v. Rogers and the whores in Green Bay.

I have two goals.  Not to see the Packers ever win another game and not to see the Patriots win another cheating Super Bowl.  Based on that, the lesser of those evils is Seattle.

Indy hosted the SB a few years ago.  Nightmare working downtown during that crap.  Roads were closed for a week, idiots (besides the normal Indy idiots) were everywhere, etc.

This'll be our third. I had a lot of access to stuff with the first (Dallas/Pitt). My wife (fiancé) at the time worked with someone on the Super Bowl committee, so we got a lot of passes to events and stuff. The kicker was a pair of tickets to the game. My brother-in-law, who is a Cowboys fan, did everything he could to get my wife to take him instead. Didn't happen. It was me and an old couple rooting for the Steelers in a sea of blue in our section.

Second time around (NY/NE), I didn't attend one single event. Was happy for the helmet catch, though.

Considering it took Garrett 4 years to figure out that a running game was the key to success, I wouldn't keep my hopes up. Best case, Jerry gives Garrett a 5 year deal, they return to 8-8 for the next 4 years.

Murray took A LOT of punishment this year. Running backs seem to flame out pretty early, too. I'd pay him, but I wouldn't give him a long deal. I'd be shocked if Jerry doesn't take care of Dez.

I'd say it was Scott Linehan coming in as the OC.  And he was supposed to be a pass first guy, but he understood to use the running game to setup the pass.  I wonder if he'll be in demand now that he can interview.  Rumors were that he would be a hot commodity this off season.  Losing him could be a big blow to big blue.
