Please help; I bought a pair of SNK LS-30 rotary joysticks and an Ultimarc rotary interface but I don't have the cables to attach the joysticks. I got a nice substitute cable with 13 female connectors on each end for 13 discrete wires, but I am not sure of the pinout. The wires apparently do not go "straight across" as with a ribbon cable where 1 is to 1, 2 is to 2, and so forth.
I have done some research and figured out that the center pin on the joystick (the pins are unmarked but it would be #7 going from either direction) is ground, as is pin #1 for the Ultimarc interface (folks at Ultimarc have been very helpful and responsive as is there reputation, but we still haven't figured out exactly where the wires go). Apparently the cable is a standard Happ rotary interface cable that I just can't seem to get on the internet at all (ebay UK has one set but will not sell internationally). Could the folks who have genuine rotaries do me a solid and just look at one of their cables and give me some clue, or even a picture or two. I actually did a PSD of a wiring attempt that I made but it actually didn't work, but it could help someone who knows what's what tell me what to do. See attached.

Check out this (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,122755.msg1303804.html#msg1303804) post for a LS-32 to Ultimarc Rotary Interface pinout.

Scott: Thanks a bunch! I had seen that post before but I just remember the cabinet and button related stuff and completely missed the wiring. It worked like a charm! I ordered a premade ribbon extension cable where you can tear off just what you need; it works perfectly and my colors even matched that of the poster (ordered it on Amazon) :notworthy:. Now on to the rest of the cab.
One note of clarification; I could find no markings on either device to indicate pin #1; pin #! for the interface is right next to the P1 and P2 designations; and pin #1 for the joystick is on the LEFT if the joystick is in upright (playable) position with the pins facing you.

Do you mind taking a picture of your interface and labeling pin 1 for Player1 and for Player2? (similar to the pic in OP)
It would be a great addition to the wiki rotary encoders (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Rotary_Encoders#Rotary_Joystick_Interface) entry, with your permission.

Sure, I will change my PNG and repost.

I had searched for a good pinout and was unsuccessful, harassed poor Andy at Ultimarc and then was finally pointed to the the right page by Scott (although when I saw it I concede that I should have been able to find it). For those that stumbled as I did and for those trying to make their own cable [build rotary joystick cable harness ultimarc interface] I changed my pinout picture per request of Scott below.
Also below is a picture of the cable that I used for the interface. That one order ("3 x 40P 20cm Dupont Wire Jumper Cable 2.54 1P-1P Male-Male/Female-Female/Female-Male") provided enough ribbon cable to do both joysticks in a standard panel with the interface located in the middle; it's super easy to work with because you just tear off the stuff that you need and the pins fit perfectly snug together on both the interface and the joystick; you obviously need to use the cable sets end-to-end to reach but there is more than enough in the one $7 order to work. The link to order is as follows: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BQA5BWU/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BQA5BWU/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Looks good. :applaud:
Just to be sure I understood your earlier post -- P2 Pin 1 on the interface is on the left by the P2 marking, correct? (Not labeled on the pic.)
Scott
EDIT: P2 Pin 1 is next to the USB conector. See diagram below.

Son of a squirrel......no wonder I didn't get mine to work right. :censored:
And printed for fixing my stuff........

Updated pic to label P2 pins 1 and 13 for clarity. (LMK if I got them backwards)

Image uploaded and added to the wiki entry here (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Rotary_Encoders#Rotary_Joystick_Interface) and the other thread here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,122755.0.html).

EDIT: Corrected P2 pin labels -- they were backwards. :embarassed:

BadMojo12,
Any chance you could assist me with setting up my Happ Rotary joystick? I have the Ultimarc Controller too. The thing that is confusing me is do I still need to plug in positive/negative leads to the pots? also, why do the pots have 3 posts instead of two?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Kerry
